Do you have broken dreams, lost hope, or maybe a destroyed ego? Then look no further. After playing this game for only an hour I have gained new dreams, an unbelievable amount of hope for myself, and a heightened ego where some people may say that I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Many years ago I got the game on the 360, loved it so much. Found it on steam and have beat it like 10 times now. It is such a fun game with many different enemies and bosses, good long story, and hours of fun. I think you should try the game out as it is like no other game ive played before and its only $5. Also you every time you play you learn something new or a different way of doing something. After owning the game for several years and beating it completely, i still enjoy this game.

I can't really say what it is.

Maybe I just like to be evil.

Maybe I like killing innocent seals, to harvest their souls.

Maybe it's that you get the option to play as more good, or more evil without being cajoled in to one of those choices.

Whatever it is, I quite liked the game. Decent replayability too, if you leave it long enough.

I like the idea of Overlord in concept but in practice the combat doesn't feel great, the controls are awkard, and the game is buggy as all hell. I've lost my progress or glitched the game in to a state where you can't progress on the 360 version and the PC version both Steam and non-Steam.

The good don't know how close to evil they really are
Short Answer: Great game

Overlord is a Fable turned RTS/Action Game taking place in the same medieval setting. You play as The Overlord accompanied by 4 different types of minions in an effort to be recognized as the new overlord of the realm.

You personally control the overlord, swinging your weapon or casting spells but also are in charge of using your minions appropriotely. It creates an interesting mix of action and RTS to accomplish combat-like puzzle elements throughout the game. While punishing at times, the game offers a unique playstyle not seen before.

Your varying minions will be used strategically to accomplish puzzles. Brown minions are effective at combat, red minions throw ranged fireballs and can remove fire obstacles, green minions can hide and jump on enemies but also remove gas obstacles and blue minions ... can swim ... but mostly die (they can also ressurect if you're quick enough).

You're also forced to make choices throughout the game to increase or decrease your corruption level which determine the flow of your game. Save the town or let it burn?

Pros:
  • Unique gameplay
  • Fun dialogue, great characters
  • Interesting bosses and fight mechanics

Neutral:
  • No map, no quest markers. You have to learn your surroundings.
  • Dated graphics. Game was made in 2007.

Cons:
  • Not much plot to keep you around. There is a plot, but you follow this blind notion to 'Be The Overlord' and do many quests, but theres not much deep central meaning to any of it until more than halfway through the game.
  • Minions get stuck, and sometimes don't know they can't swim. Small bugs, but not destructive.

I have a special needs cat. He's deaf, partially blind, and is really hyper while being very affectionate. His name is Samson. Sometimes he picks up weird things and brings them to me. Sometimes, he just flops down and swats at something that isn't there. He reminds me of the minions in this game. So I started calling the minions "Samsons." Now, I like to imagine that when Samson (the cat, not the minion) is bringing me a toy or dragging a shoe across the room, he's bringing it to me and saying "For the masta!" OR when I get home and he runs up to me, that he's saying "HAIL!"

I love this god damn game, and I love those little Samsons.

Got this game back in the day, not long after release. Lots of people tend to liken it to pikmen, which is 100% an accurate comparison as far as base mechanics of gameplay are concerned, but for style, aesthetic and character, this game provides a totally unique experience that is difficult to find elsewhere. Recommend it highly.

Very fun and enjoyable game , there are some bugs , such as minions getting stuck in walls and minions getting stuck while carrying bags of gold (R.I.P. money) also (not sure if this is a bug) if you are presing a key at the same time the dialog starts , you skip the dialog (not sure if subtitles show the message , i played without them)(i lost the gold and the elf women ;_; ).

Playing this game last night i was able to get a little more into it(although the game not having a map or quest marker disturbs me) The game is very exiciting and fun. If you like games that let you go around and kick azz anywhere and anyway you want, This is the game for you. The game can also be very relaxing, Your minions do all the work and you barely have to lift a finger. The game also gives you the choice to be a good or bad(murder the innocent or kill the wicked) overlord.

The game gets a 8/10 from me.

I must say, Overlord is one of my favorite games from my early teenage years. Yes, the controls are sometimes clunky, minions will get stuck, you'll sometimes have a hard time because of overally weird enemy AI. But my impressions were, and still are, positive. I'm glad I got this gem on this year's summer sale and wouldn't regret getting it for the current full price. Currently replaying Overlord II and it looks like it's a big improvement from the original.

A hidden gem,
no seriously this is one of the best games I have ever played. The reasons? The minions obviously! They are just hilarious! My favorite part of them is the fact that they can loot equipment so you can have 50 brown fighter minions that look unique and barbaric. Did I mention that they have a hierarchy system too? The strongest minion (and probably your favorite) always goes next to the dark lord and the other line up behind him so at the furthest back you have those newly spawned grunts. You must be careful about the minions that you do care about because if they die they are gone forever. I once had my favorite minion who was wearing a golden crown which he looted from a fat hafling king get smashed by a succubus, oh god did I miss him!

I originally got the game on disk hence the play time.

I played Overlord back when it first came out, and remembered enjoying it quite a bit. I was excited to see it on sale here on Steam with its addon and sequel, so I picked them up dirt cheap.

The game is pretty fun, with the story being staged with you in the role of the villain out to subjugate any and all you come in contact with. You get the option to choose between good and evil, but it's more accurately evil and really, really evil. The game play is fun, though a bit frustrating when you can't quite find how to get to the next area. I realized how much I've come to rely on the objective markers in newer games (Skyrim and such), when I had to actually think about where to go. Once you get all four minion types, the game really starts to move, because more paths to success are open to you.

The primary negative to the game, I feel, is the minion control when using the keyboard and mouse. Controlling minions is often clunky, especially if you are standing just a bit too close to something you want them to interact with. It is exceedingly difficult to control the minions when they have to lure enemies to certain places or take timed explosives to certain points before they detonate (both happen a lot late in the game). It was really hard to move around while directing a minion, which made a couple of challenges lose their entertainment value quickly.

Besides those few specific examples, however, I found the game to quite fun all these years after my first playthrough. The graphics are dated, and the story is very shallow, but it was worth the couple of bucks I spent on it. Just remember you are playing an older game when you start!

Edit: It was mentioned in comments that I might need to note that my hours recorded playing are inaccurate. I have a tendancy to leave games running overnight while I'm sleeping or while I'm at work, so the hours logged never match my actual hours played by a long shot. Do NOT expect to get over 300 hours of playability out of this game. I have no idea exactly how many hours I've put in.
