Welcome, stranger!

Honestly, I never would have sought out "Serious Sam Double D" on my own. But since the "Serious Sam" bundle was so stupid cheap not too long ago (Oct. '14), I installed it just to see what it was about.

What I found was a glorious hybrid of "Contra" and "Borderlands". The gun stacking mechanic can be as ludicorus as you want... provided you've found enough weapons and connectors, and purchased the mods. Gameplay is not at all complex, though there are a few physics puzzles that will challenge you. Old school gamers who know when to run left, jumper high, or look for hidden paths will be rewarded.

"Double D" is even more over the top than the regular Sam games, and is genuinely funny. Especially on a second playthrough after you unlock Huff. After a few hours of Sam Stone's ultra-serious machoism, you get to experience the whole thing again with Huff's ultra-redneck belligerance. Really, the plot is non-sensical and non-existant. The characters are cartoonish, and the worlds full of in-jokes and Internet memes. So yeah, a lot of "Borderlands" flavor, only you're not stuck with just one gun at a time.

I highly recommend a second playthrough with Huff on higher difficulty. You'll have all the mechanics down pat (and all your upgrades), and will need to be challenged. Plus, Huff's dialogue and cutscenes are great fun, even if you're blasting the same enemies. There're just more of them.

Controller support is just fine, so it makes a great pick-up and play game. The graphics have a hand-painted look that hold up very well in HD. I haven't tried local co-op, but it's a shame there's no online feature. Not a dealbreaker by any means, though. Good value for under $10, a steal at anything less. Don't hesitate to pick it up on sale for yourself or gift to a friend. Seriously!

I like this game and can't get enough of Sam but it comes off like a ♥♥♥♥ty Flash game. That might not appeal to you but it does to me. Buy it and stack some guns already.

Needs Even Bigger Guns!

A fantasticly fun 2D platforming shooter, flavoured with Serious Sam Sweetness. This game is as enjoyable as it is funny, combining a mixture of guns together into one mega-gun so you can take down dinosaurs and gorillas with blades for hands. This game features lots of re-playability and challanges for more unlocks and hidden secrets. Whether your a fan of the Serious Sam series or just a fan of platformers, this game is a must have!

Revived my love for the Serious Sam series.

The gameplay is non-stop fun, enjoyed along with some excellent background music.
I would describe this game as an platformer/shooter crossover, with strong emphasis on humour, unnecessarily brutal and gory violence, big aliens and big explosions. And flamethrowers.

Great game!!!!! :)

Serious Sam Double D XXL is probably the best attempt at making a non-FPS Serious Sam video game by indie developers. The game offers Contra-like action-platforming with a plethora of weapons and a gun stacking system that helps you even more to slaughter your never-ending stream of baddies. The intentionally silly story may annoy you, but if you are the type of person who likes that kind of humour that is present in the trailers and promotional images, then this game will be a great source of entertainment for many hours.

Long version:
Serious Sam is known mostly as an FPS series where you kill an absurd number of strange alien monsters in order to save humanity by kicking massive amounts (and massive sizes) of rear ends. Or other applicable body parts.

Serious Sam Double D (XXL) brings all that into 2D, or to be more precise, a Contra-like 2D action platformer shooter. The goal of the game is pretty much the same as in the main series: go from one end of the level to the other all the while hundreds if not thousands of enemies teleport in all around you and happily thrown themselves in the line of your bullets, rockets, chainsaws, plasma beams and everything else you can kill and maim with.
The game also includes a new type of weapon system called stacking, where you can sort of duck-tape two or more guns together to create one huge pile of murdering mayhem machine. This system is highly configurable. The XXL expansion also introduces weapon gadgets which all can add small additional functions to your guns. (These are purchasable in the shops, which are also new for the update.)

While the base games had a unique style of humour, they usually kept a somewhat serious tone with these wacky tidbits thrown in only as Easter eggs/secrets or some form of tension-releasing element. Double D doesn’t follow the same route, it’s all about tongue-in-cheek humour starting from the cutscenes to the level secrets or even the bosses, which are all the craziest things you can imagine: they start with a King Kong-sized ape with hover rocket nozzles as legs and a chainsaw arm… and this is probably the sanest of them.

Sadly, this humour, especially in the update, where they are fully voiced (they used Worms-like gibberish in the original) can be very tiresome after a while. The level design is also somewhat frustrating, more about insane jumps and running in a pseudo-maze than about providing some interesting ground to kill enemies. The aim system also suffers somewhat in the update with a forced aim assist that seems to be present in some way even when it’s turned off.

Still, apart from these mistakes and disadvantages, the game offers another– somewhat silly– Serious Sam adventure in the form of the campaign, and the combat system is interesting enough to keep you for the challenge levels too.

Great 2d game that seperates from the common 3d Serious Sam games, I didn't think a gamelike erious sam could be good in 2d but I was mistaken! This game is brilliant.

This game is entirely too easy. It's practically devoid of any challenge. Everything about the game makes it needlessly easy. You start off with aiming assistance and a nice big line of arrows aiming for your targets. You can climb higher, meaning enemies can't reach you and they run around uselessly. So the typically destructive kamikazes run around screaming while you pick them off from a higher platform. And then there's the weapon stacking. They let you fire multiple weapons at once. That sounds awesome, but it makes the game practically impossible to lose. I turned off all the assistance features and restarted the game on the hardest difficulty and it was still one of the least challenging games I've ever played. And I'm not exactly a champion speedrunner, I'll still go down like a truckload of anvils if I play sidescrollers like Contra or Alien Hominid. Serious Sam games are chaotic shooters, but they do challenge you with tricky enemy types and ammo rationing. The designers are clearly Serious Sam fans and I wish them luck, but they weren't able to replicate the challenge of the Serious Sam games.

Fun game. You can jump just right in and unleash doomsday on your over the top grotesque yet humorous enemies. Enjoyable ultraviolence that ♥♥♥♥s logic up the ♥♥♥ and gives you several six pack stacks of guns. (Hello Moe, they stole your idea.) Yes. Six guns at the same time. All with diffrent customization options.

Mixes up nicely with secrets and exploration sexquences, even some minigames and race events. Nice arts assest and acceptable metal music. If you dig games in the likes of duke nukem, this game is for you. The game cuts a little short, but its worth a little waste of your lifetime.

Ramp up the speed adjustment and the difficulty for enhanced experience, that's my recummendation.
