Neverwinter: Storm King's Thunder is Live!

Greetings, adventurers!

Storm King’s Thunder calls heroes to Icewind Dale to solve a deadly mystery and recover an ancient artifact of immense power: the famed ring of winter. The ring has been seized by the fierce frost giant Jarl Storvald, who is attempting to control its powers and use it to freeze the oceans, blanketing the world with snow and ice. Orcs, goblins, barbarians, trolls, and other monsters are gathering in the north, ready to pledge fealty to Jarl Storvald should he succeed. This of course is causing havoc in the northern settlements of Ten-Towns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTvSQL3qiBo

There are other reasons to venture into the cold. The frozen lands of the north, once the center of the ancient Ostorian Empire, is littered with relics from that long-forgotten time. Those Ostorian relics now lie in dangerous places. They are well worth the risk of acquiring, for they are infused with Voninblod, the ancient power of the giants of old.

This exciting expansion introduces a new campaign that has heroes adventuring in three new wilderness zones, Bryn Shander, Lonelywood and Cold Run, culminating in our most challenging dungeon yet, Fangbreaker Island.

In addition to the new content we’ve listening to you and have been working hard to make changes in Neverwinter, in particular this time around with Class Reviews for the Hunter Ranger, Scourge Warlock, and Guardian Fighter. We made quite a few changes before the Class Reviews went to the Preview server, and then had lots of back and forth discussions on the preview forums, making additional changes and bug fixes with the support and assistance of our awesome preview player base!

Here's a list of some of the major features:
Three new zones: Bryn Shander, Lonelywood, and Cold Run
Ostorian relics system
New Dungeon
Class Balance updates for three classes: Hunter Ranger, Guardian Fighter, and Scourge Warlock
Runic Lockbox

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to adventuring with you in the Storm King’s Thunder! I’ll be the one wearing a big scarf!

Storm King's Thunder Coming August 16

We’re proud to announce Neverwinter: Storm King’s Thunder is coming to PC on August 16! In just under one month, adventurers will be able to investigate the sudden return of giants to the Sword Coast in our tenth expansion, which coincides with Wizards of the Coast’s new adventure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB9jgID3_-c

In order to fight off these colossal invaders, adventurers must return to Icewind Dale and team up with characters from Dungeons & Dragons lore, including Catti-brie and Wulfgar, characters created by acclaimed author, R.A. Salvatore.

Storm King’s Thunder introduces three new adventure zones for high-leveled players where the story missions will take place – Bryn Shander, The Lonelywood and Cold Run. After completion of the new campaign, a new dungeon by the name of Fangbreaker Island will be available to delve into, offering a challenge unlike any other.

Our first step into the much-anticipated class balance arrives with this expansion where the Hunter Ranger, Scourge Warlock, Guardian Fighter and Great Weapon Fighter will undergo overhauls to make different paths more viable. These changes are currently on Preview if you’d like to check them out.

We have more information coming soon in our series of developer blogs leading up to August 16. Keep an eye out on our social channels and news page to stay up to date on all things Storm King’s Thunder.

Will you brave the storm?

Do not buy this game it's pay to win the company wants you to spend a small fortune on everything in the game u found a chest oh now you have to spend real money to buy keys to open them I have like thousands of these chests that keep dropping in dungeons plus lots more besides they want you to buy. If they put effort into the game and put a price to buy the game without all the nonsense and maybe just selling mounts pets like world of warcraft. I've abandoned this game like alot of sensible people DO NOT BUY

After giving it a 2nd try. Not changing recommendation until 60 hours or more if I even make it to that far in game time. Review update 8/18/2016.

Well I only lasted about a weeks time, and the game has at serious problems. Neverwinter its pay to win, and the loyal players (addicts) will deny it. They will say things like "Well that's not how I see it." People when 90% of all negative reviews complain that the game is Pay to Win then it's Pay to Win.

The other problem is some players will kick you out of lvl 70 parties if you have not paid to get high enough gear. I mean they will kick you if your item lvl is low. So the addicts that say this game is free to pay are the same hypocritates that will kick you for not having high gear.

They will also not forgot to mention what a cheap ♥♥♥ you are for not paying to support the game.

If you do decide to play the game playing Cleric, GF, or the Pally would be best since they are the classes that are the most OP. I am not against spending money in game, what I am against is a game that forces it on you. You either pay or you will suck. Also don't like that the ones that pay get all the good gear. All gear is hidden behind chest that require keys. Guess where you buy keys.. yup you guessed, and guess where the best gear is. Also for enchantments they tend to fail. Guess what you need to do to improve the success rate yup you guessed it you can pay for, 100% success.

You might love this game, but I hate it.

I have spent an hour just trying to log in to this POS game. Apparently I made the mistake of having a cryptic account and a perfect world account before the two infamous companies merged. My email is tied to an account already, and resetting my password lets me log into their website, but not the client. Anything that requires this much frustration isn't worth it. Knowing Cryptic's track record, this is going to fail miserably anyway.

if they turned this into a pay to play game and instead of buying gear with cash make you work for it but not like china farmers hard lol but get better and better gear as you clear more difficult content i think this game would be huge, but they way it is now its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you cant even buy more inventory slots unless you pay 10-20 bucks a pop thats insane, when i used to play when level 60 was cap i didnt pay for much i did buy one more bag for inventory but i had my char pretty geared up with the dailys and getting all the dimond cash from refineing it, it was not bad but now its stupid you can buy a whole new upgraded computer and play some other games with a 4k tv with the money you will need to spend at level 70. devs got really greedy. not worth the time even though it is a good game just the pay to not even win but to get regular stuff outta hand. screw these devs for doing that to a great combat and pretty deep class building D&D game. shame on yall

Pay to win.

The devs are greedy. The price it costs for max level items like mythic artifacts is quite funny. Maybe a few thousand dollars to get your char near max or more, it has been a while since I played so I'm not sure how much it is now, but everytime lots of players get maxed they increase the gear further to squeeze more money out of people.

I loved this game, the best combat in any MMO I have played but after all the hours I have played I can be 1 shot by other players because of p2w and in pve the paying players can clear content so much easier. I have played nearly 1900 hours and not even slightly close to being maxed.

You will need to spend money to buy a mount, have fun using the slow one you get for free, it will make most content terrible. You will need to pay for inventory slots since items have soul bound, shared bound and about 4 other types even if it's all the same item they won't stack. A good way for the devs to make people need to spend money on extra slots.

If your rich or don't mind never getting stronger no matter how long you play then you might like this game, otherwise I really wouldn't reccomend it.

What can I say, this game used to be good, until they made almost everything pay to win, I did play this game for more then 2 years and had to quit because a non-casher like me couldn't compete with millionaires in this game anymore, end game is now hard, PvP is all about money, if you don't want to spend money don't bother starting to play this game. I don't recommand it at all!

In the 2 or 3 years I've spent on and off playing this game, I can honestly tell you it's one of the best mmo rpg games I've played. I love the gameplay, and it's got a lot of content to satisfy a variety of playstyles. That being said, I don't recommend this game because it has been lagging on me since I started playing, and it's especiay bad in common areas (I'm sure it's because I play on a not-so-decent system, but I don't care-I'm complaining anyway). Another reason is that the community for this game in particular is ♥♥♥♥ing garbage and it's one of the reasons I'd rather just play a single player game. Another thing I hated most in this game is that it's largely a play to win game. Now, I'll spend a couple dollars on a game I really like, but I'm as cheap as the next person, and I don't want to spend hundreds on any game--it's just not worth it. So why not just get rid of the paying aspect altogether? Anyway, since this game only has a few good things about it, I'd not recommend this to anyone, unless they're willing to shill out thousands of dollars to look like an elitist ♥♥♥♥♥♥. To me, that's just short of an overall disappointing game.

I used to LOVE Neverwinter, played it for 8+ hours a day for almost a year (I played most of my time not through Steam, if you're wondering why the numbers don't add up. After getting a few characters to max level, I find the game unenjoyable for several reasons. However, let me not be entirely biased to the negative aspects of the game, I shall list some pros too, if I can think of any that is...

PROS:
+Fun I guess, decent lasting appeal.
+Cool animations, mechanics, and cinematics in my opinion.
+Many ways to play your character.
+Many dungeons, plus community made instances that make end game less dissatisfying, and it welcomes harder or easier instances than what is provided in the actual game.

If I can think of more, I'll be sure to mention it.

CONS:
-Game can be really laggy if you don't have a high-end PC, poor optimization.
-Quests, quests, quests.. Daily quests, instance quests, collecting quests, I'm tired of hearing the word quest.
-Most of the dungeons provided are WAY too easy and drop absolutely rubbish gear.
-Grindfest up to max level, I got bored and took several hiatuses while leveling my first and second characters.
-You thought the grindfest was over at max level? Think again! Time to grind for good gear while getting overloaded with gear that's so garbage, it's comparable to Trump's campaign.
-The community is honestly toxic. There's a lot of spammers, scammers, beggars, and elitists who look down on everyone else. The Elitists are the worst. I can't count the number of times I had to leave a dungeon because my gear wasn't to their standards. Screw you kids.

And the biggest con of all, the one EVERY other review mentions...

You ready?

Me neither.

PAY TO WIN BABY!
You like green stuff in your wallet? Don't play this game.
If you like this game, say goodbye to that green stuff!

This game evolved from a sheer grindfest to who can waste the most money on an online video game. Fits in with the elitists. Allow me to simulate a conversation.

1: "Hey man! I just spent $200 on the game!"
2: "No way dude! I just finished farming for 8 hours and got nothing!"
1: "Man that's unfortunate! Good news for me though, I just spent another $200 and tricked out my first character! I'm so happy!"
2: "You wasted that much on the game?"
1: "Your gear sucks, don't talk to me pleb."

^Neverwinter in a nutshell.

Don't play this game, it's terrible now. Cryptic put this game in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in recent months/years by adding an insane paywall to even be able to play with other people, unless you're lucky and wait for a few hours.. or days.. Stick to World of Warcraft, Rift, or something along those lines.

It's a huge cash grab. It's not p2w but it's pretty close, you can play for free and have some fun but you'll never be great for free anymore. They keep taking stuff and nerfing stuff trying to combat bot farmers but here's the thing, those farmers aren't negatively affecting players, the changes that they make to combat the bots do negatively affect the real players. They have made it so much harder for the new players to ever get anything that I'd never recommend this game. If I never played again it'd take a new player 5000 hours and a couple of thousand dollars to attain the things that I've gotten in my thousand hours. It has great things about it and if they made it a subscription game and stopped all the stupid nerfing then it'd probably be awesome. At this point I'd recommend Rift or ESO before this even though they are also heavy cash grabs.. I guess the days of great subscription mmo's are gone in favor of the cash shop..

just put it this way, the game is F2P, its an RPG, lots of folks play, you can still quest and do dungeons even without the super rare legendary "ive been playing a lot longer than you" gear. could the game use some more work, yeah, but the way it is, the game is still decent. IMO, they should focus on improving the game overall rather than keep releasing new modules. or at least focus on game mechanics, etc for next two major updates, then go back to releasing modules. i may not have a lot of time invested in the game to voice my opinion about the game overall, but i like RPG's and while im not a hardcore player, im sure somebody would value this opinion/review.

I soaked more hours into this than I should have, but honestly if you enjoy the D&D universe and like MMOs then you shouldn't even bother reading reviews, just get the game already. It plays well, had very few issues with it, and the progression was good enough to keep me playing it and I usually avoid MMOs. However if you're looking for a good storyline and you're not familiar with D&D or the forgotten realms I don't really recommend it unless you're in love with MMOs. Overall though it's a decent quality game.

Ok, here's the serious answer. You can spend time or money to get more powerful.. Sorry for the crappy crayon drawing and lame graph, but I had to make due in a pinch. Power gains are rapid and easy for small investments of time/money. However, the way the game works, it becomes increasingly expensive in terms of time or money to increase your power, to the point where it might take days or weeks (or supposedly hundreds of dollars) to increase your power a very, very, very small amount...like less than 1%.

Thus at a high level, a character might have exponetially more hours (or money) invested in it, but a very, very small actually difference in power (5-10%). For some people, this is apparently a huge deal. Particularly in PvP there are some people who simply do not possess the skills or reflexes to overcome a 5% difference in gear. For others who are very skilled or practiced, that differences is far outweighed by said skills.

However, you're going to see the typical "OMG IT COSTS LIKE THOUSANDS OF DOLLAHS TO BIS" stuff when this question gets asked. And the answer is, yes, if you want to level to 60 and instantly have the best EVERYTHING, the market price is probably close to $2000. But if you're willing to put even just a small amount of time into the game, that price drops dramatically...zero for some people.

If you are looking for an MMO that's fun and easy to get into then Neverwinter is the place to call your new home. I love the action oritented combat and it's RPG elements. The community also makes their own dungeons for you to play and they are amazing, especially with friends or random people. A great game for anyone who is looking for a F2P MMO and highly recommended for people who also love hack n slash combat. It really puts the D&D license to good use.

So this is my second review, after that horrible train wreck mod 6-9 were.

Neverwinter is back, and better than ever! They fixed most of the graphical optimization issues, so running the game is no problem. Servers can still be an issue at times, but it's clear that they've been working on that as well. Gameplay is the usual neverwinter, at end game running dungeons is enjoyable again. The level grind from 60-70 is still boring and a hassle, can't really do much about that though huh? Some aspects of end game really push towards paying since it can feel impossible at times. Though the game is completely free to play, since everything necessary is obtainable in game.

8.5/10 Would recommend now.
