Keep in mind: THIS GAME HAS AVAILABLE SINCE APRIL, and was officially released in June. It was released on Steam less than a week ago, hence the "1.4 hours", meaning 1.4 hours since less than a week ago (that's how steam hours work...) I have quite a bit of experience with this game.

Pros: FREE! Fun, varied combat and classes. Lots to do, and the Foundry adds endless adventures.

Cons: Extremely Pay to Win at higher levels, quests are linear, classes all fall into boring MMO standards, strays too far away from D&D (a Cleric that can't Turn Undead? No Draw Upon Holy Might? Common Cryptic...)

My opinion: Avoid. I had fun for the first couple dozen hours, but I soon felt the pressure from all sides to spend real money on ridiculous things, which usually doesn't bother me. But the bigger issue is that free players are at a MASSIVE disadvantage. Fusing shards and runestones is a giant cash grab, considering a "Greater Thunderhead Enchantment" is nearly impossible to craft through the game unless you shell out roughly $160. The worst part, it IS usable in PvP. Other monetary attrocities include $40 mounts, $10 slot bags, $6 skill respec, and $35 hirelings.

Conclusion: Try it out for yourself, it's "free". The combat is fun and Foundry is great to explore. Be warned though that this is just a semi-typical MMO with limitless pay restrictions at every turn. I felt that throughout my gameplay, there wasn't any part of the experience where the developers weren't trying to squeeze every last penny out of me. And that, to me, isn't fun. 6/10

NOTE: Steam says I've played for 1 hour, but this game has been officially released since June, and was in open beta for months prior. I quit in September after leveling a Cleric and a Rogue.

EDIT 12/8/13: I had no idea that my opinion of this game would receive this amount of attention. I had no idea people would get so worked up, it's kinda funny watching people raging so hard at the opinions of one person. Makes me think I made the right choice not to support this game ^.^

EDIT 12/9/13: Here's a brief explaination of one of the "Pay2Win" elements of the game, as requested by PredatorAncient:

Players are given the option to add additional stats/effects to their equipment in Neverwinter. These come in the forms of Runestones (pets) and Enchantments (Armor/Weapon). For pets, the Runestones are split into Offense and Defense. For Enchantments, they are split into Offense, Utility, and Defense. A single Runestone/Enchantment provides different bonuses depending on which slot there are equipped to. These also have ranks and start from 1 and ends at 9. Four of the same kind may also fuse to move up a tier. The chance of success starts at 95% at rank 1 and 10% at rank 8. You will lose a single Runestone/Enchantment upon failure.

There are two ways to circumvent failure: Preservation Ward and Coalescent Ward. Preservation Wards cost 10 cents each and prevent the loss of materials upon failure. They are also only consumed upon failure. Coalescent Wards cost 10 dollars and guarantees success of fusion. Small amounts of both of these wards may also be obtained on a weekly basis through Celestial Coins (the later being rarer). (link) Now you may be wondering why there's a huge discrepancy between the two Wards. I was wondering for a while too until I stepped my foot into endgame and found out there was an entirely different type of Enchantments: The Armor/Weapon Enchantments.

Armor/Weapon Enchantments are for specific slots in your weapon/chest and grant special effects. They come in shards and have a chance to drop from Epic Dungeon bosses. You must combine 4 shards to create a Lesser version of the Enchantment. However, the success chance of fusion is at a staggeringly low 1%.(link) To compensate, they have very strong effects. An example would be the Thunderhead Enchantment. However, the real kicker here is that these "Lesser" versions may be fused again to gain a stronger version. Those may also be fused again to create the strongest version. Ultimately, the Greater Thunderhead Enchantment will have a 30% on crit to damage and stun foes. To create the strongest Enchantment possible, it will cost 160 dollars and 64 shards. Unlike companions, these can be used in PvP.

Opening letter:

Pros: Looks pretty. Nice animation and cutscene looked healthy. Voice overs are decent. Really customizable option menu.

Cons: Has nothing to do with D&D besides the name. All races are wrong in both appearance and stats. Gear looks like something a WoW kid made. All the D&D rules you hold dear in your heart are broken. (Zombies dying by piercing weapons and feeling pain. Wot?) Controls are kind of boring. Screen is cluttered. Why am I doing hundreds of damage right off the bat?

I do not recommend this game for any avid D&D fans at all. The opening cutscene alone breaks about 90% of all rules in the Books. Its like a rookie DM on his first day of the job wrote the adventures you find within. The first thing I saw was in the cutscene that made me yell in pain. The dragon..... Looked exactly like that thing from the Wrath of the Lich King cutscene. Seriously just if you want to make WoW then make WoW. Stop stepping on my beloved franchise. Im going to stop ranting about that damned cutscene but it bothered me every couple of seconds. None of it was within the rules of D&D.

:ets move on to the character creation screen. Hi. None of these races are right. Why is every man broad shoulder and larged torso hulks? Even the halfling.. Who was actually more in the size of a GNOME than a halfling. Aparently no one at perfect world has ever seen the scale chart in the books. Then lets move on to the woman. Curvey and scantly clad. Hi. Im sure dwarven women are NOT curved like that. Same with half Orcs. Plus that dwarf woman would of beat some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up for having her heart exposed like that. Yeesh. And what the hell? High Elf by screen but the subtext says Sun elf? Make up your god damn mind game. Call them one or the other.

Moving on to Customization. Its decent. I dont mind what I can do to make my characters look unique.

Moving on to ability scores. This is such BS. This is the biggest BS I have ever seen. You do not put a random die roller like this in a game at all. The numbers are practically meaningless seeing as you cant roll your "Primary" Stats lower than what the game allows. And the grayed out stats mean absolutely nothing. Why cant I make a charismatic Warrior? Why? Why cant I make a Strong wizard? Whhhhyyyy?! Why cant I allocate 28 to 32 ability points how I want to? This makes choosing a race who has no stats for a class completely useless to mix and match race and classes up. I want to make a Dwarven Wizard! Dont you tell me what to do game. complete rubbish.

Moving on to classes. Hi. These are the dumbest classes I have ever seen in my life. THEY ALREADY HAVE THE CLASS PREMADE FOR YOU! THERE IS NO CUSTOMIZATION AT ALL. NO FEAT CHOOSING. NO SKILL CHOICES. NO CLASS ABILITY TREES FOR YOUR BROWSING PLEASURE. Dear god I can not rant about this fact more than anything. I saw this game a few months ago and thought. "WOOOO! Im going to make a Half-Orc thug! I'll use the Rogue class, get some feats to use Blunt weapons and just KO people for their loot." Kind of like I was doing in NWN2 and NWN games. Buuut no. I HAVE TO be a Trickery Rogue. Or whatever its called. No. This is completely wrong. You do not take class customization away from a D&D player. You just simply do not. THats why we play D&D. We love our RPing. Our Rolling. Out Customization. We LOVE to BUILD our characters OUR way. Flaws or not. We love everything about OUR characters. This game plays like a DM decided he wanted his group to use very specific characters with no players allowed to change anything. This is terrible.

Moving on to ingame. Wow. I was spammed by everything in exsistance. The tutorial guy wouldnt shut up. But I could atleast get past that. It only bothered me slightly. Then got into combat..... Wow.... Lets not have anything remotely related to D&D even near combat. One shot with my bow caused 67 damage. Yeah. If you play D&D you know thats dumb. Oh and the zombie was hit with an arrow and died. How? HOW? HOW!? If this game even FOLLOWED D&D rules in the slightest that zombie would have a Damage reduction from anything but slashing and magic. Urgh. Argh. Eugh.


It breaks all the rules from D&D. Plays like WoW meets Tabula Risa. Looks pretty. Dont play.

I don't recomend this game for anyone. I played about 900 hours of this "thing" from the open beta(soft launch in March 2013) to the release of Module 2.

Unfortunately the clowns in Cryptic and Perfect World are turning the game even more P2W with every patch. New reeskined mounts became companions and reeskined companions became mounts that cost outrageous amounts of Zen. PVP is dominated by bots, 110% mounts and players that have bought his gear with money, like the Tenebrous enchantments. Bots are dominating the market and the developers do nothing to punish this behavior. Every new patch introduce new bugs and exploits and old bugs and exploits still haunt the player community from the soft-launch in March 2013.

The game has 6 classes now but you need only 3 to do the end-game content, a Divine Cleric, a Trickster Rogue and 3 Control Wizards, oh wait, the game has no end-game content too! Boring and repetitive dailies and "epic" dungeons full of glitches and exploits are the only thing to do after max level. And before I forget, the community are one of the worst that I have ever seen, fanboys and dumb kidos everywhere, defending the need of profity for the company that are milking them.

Stay away from this piece of crap.

Neverwinter is an action mmo which requires you to be quick on your feet instead of just standing still in a corner while you mindlessly press your skill buttons, which most mmorpgs tend to be these days.
The game features a dodge system where a red ring will appear when the enemy is about to do a powerful attack. If you don't dodge out of the way in time, you'll take a big amount of damage and you're more likely to die after that.
Your skills aren't limited to mana. Each of them are on a cooldown timer which require you to plan ahead to make some big and powerful combos.

The game currently features 6 different classes, all of which are unique and function in their own specific way. They're all interesting to play and doesn't feel bland.

The graphics are really pretty to look at. The environments are very different from area to area and they're always fun and interesting to explore.
The main storyline can easily be completed solo or with a few friends. There are a few optional dungeons and skirmishes along the way which require you to have a full party of 5 to be able to complete, if you don't have 4 friends available you'll be able to queue up and find other people who wants to complete the dungeon as well. But you aren't required to complete those dungeons or skirmishes if you want to progress in the main story line.

It features one of the best, if not the best, paying options of all f2p mmo games out there.
It closely resembles the paying options of Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2. You can chose to pay for items or you can chose to play the game and use the in-game currency called "Astral Diamonds" to buy store exclusive items. Most of these store exclusive items will also be available to purchase trough other players, either by directly trading with them or trough the in-game auction house.
Note: The only store exclusive items that provide a stat bonus are companions, and they're pretty much worthless once you get to level 60 and start doing epic dungeons. However, you'll be able to get companions by just playing, but they won't be as powerful as their store counter-part.

The devs have events about 1-2 times each month. Where you'll be able to get new items exclusive to said event or gain extra Astral Diamonds at a much faster pace than you normally would.
They also regularly patch the game, either with bug fixes, balances fixes or new content. On top of that, they have also released new areas pretty often. The game went out of beta less than 6 months ago and they have already released 2 completely new endgame areas, a completely new class and a major overhaul of many of the in-game features.

Really solid for a freebie; cool environments, awesome music and voice acting, and the combat is quick, varied and responsive. It takes a lot of dedication to try out a class to its fullest potential but replaying the leveling portions offers class and racial specific quests.

Open instances are populated enough to be fun, but not crowded. Dungeon queuing could be more organized, its blind until you get in. Its got lots of content, and events seem to be coming fast and furious with unique items, mounts etc. The ingame currency to cash conversion rates seem a little steep, but its supply and demand, so I imagine the rates will drop over time.

Overall, this is tough to pass up on! 9/10.
