What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Magehold Fairwinds is a strategy game about leading an airship crew through dangerous voyages. We’re bringing it to Early Access so players can help shape the game as we expand its routes, events, and strategic choices. Player feedback will help us tune the difficulty, balance the ship and resource systems, and make each voyage feel rewarding and distinct.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Fairwinds to remain in Early Access for approximately 12–18 months. The schedule may change as development progresses and we respond to player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to refine the balance, progression, and variety between runs based on player feedback. The exact scope may change during development.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is fully playable and features hundreds of unique quests and encounters. You can manage your airship and crew, make strategic choices throughout each voyage, and take part in combat with optional auto-battle features. The game also includes two endless modes and multiple difficulty settings, giving you different ways to play and replay.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ll involve the community through Steam discussions and player feedback. We’ll use bug reports and suggestions to guide fixes and improvements, especially for combat balance, difficulty settings, and the endless modes. We’ll share development updates and explain how player feedback is shaping the game as it develops.”

About This Game

Your ship, your crew, and the open sky

Take the helm of your own airship and chart a course across the hand-painted skies of Magehold. Sail through five acts and nine distinct regions—from smoky river docks, crystal cliffs, and beastborn aeries to gnome clock-cities, the lawless Reaches, and the noble spires of Crown Peak. At the far edge of the chart lies the Hush Front, where a creeping void is draining the magic out of the world.

Every voyage is a new chart, a new crew, and a fresh fight for survival. Keep your hull patched, your stores full, and your crew alive long enough to carve your name across the skies—and decide the fate of the world's magic when you reach the end of the map.

Real-time tactical combat (with pause)

Command your ship from a cutaway view where every room and crewmate matters. Route magical Flow between the Helm, Drive, Battery Deck, Casting Room, and wind shields. Target specific enemy rooms, put out fires, patch hull breaches, and keep the Keel running before you drop out of the sky. Pause at any moment to issue orders.
  • Broadside guns & ancient weapons: mix elemental batteries, sweeping sunlance beams, heavy ballistae, crystal mortars, deck-clearing grapeshot, and the void-powered Hush Lens—and swap guns from storage mid-fight.
  • Battlefield magic & Counterspells: seat mages in the Casting Room to hurl five elements at enemy systems, blast boarders in your own corridors, or intercept incoming enemy volleys in mid-air.
  • Clockwork constructs & living skies: deploy repair crabs, ward wisps, and towering Boarding Golems while fighting through shifting gales, fog banks, hailstorms, and multi-ship ambushes.
  • Optional Auto Battle: flip one switch to let the AI fight for you in battles and delves. Pick a combat doctrine (Gunline, Raider, Saboteur, Spellcaster, or Bulwark) and take back the helm whenever you want.

Board, sabotage, and take prisoners

Fire the Boarding Harpoon into an enemy hull, reel in the line, and send your crew across—or slip aboard unseen with stealth cloaks, smoke pots, and clockwork Brass Weevils that gnaw through enemy systems from the inside. Barricade doorways, form shield walls, sabotage their Drive, or force a surrender and claim your prize.

When enemies board you, lock the bulkheads, rig alarm chimes, and unleash Watch Hounds to hunt them down. Build a Prison on your ship to capture defeated enemies alive—convince them to join your crew, hand outlaws over to the law for silver, or sell lawful captives to the criminal underground.

Beasts, bosses, and the closing storm

Nine multi-phase boss encounters stand between you and the end of the voyage—from the Tallowmere and the Stormmother to the clockwork Orrery, the Pale Regatta, and the Cistern at the heart of the Hush. Between them prowl skywyrms, storm-rays, and crystal leviathans that breathe lightning, frost, and fire.

Behind you, the pressure front is always advancing. Slip into hidden refuges to make camp and patch your hull, or brave the front's elite Pursuers to crack open sealed regional Vaults, duel their Wardens, and wake the secret boss lurking in the grey.

Go ashore: dungeon delves

Some waypoints can't be settled from the sky. Take a landing party of up to four into sunken libraries, ruined academies, ancient vaults, and fallen wrecks. Push chamber by chamber under lantern light, scout the dark with clockwork beetles, battle monsters and bound elementals, free captives, and climb out with whatever loot you can carry.

A crew that remembers what they survive

Recruit humans, beastborn, gnome tinkers, wild casters, and fire-forged emberkin. Every crewmate has a name, a past, and a role on deck. They level up, unlock combat tactics, craft and overclock gadgets at the Tinker's Bench, and grow traits shaped by what they live through. They form tight bonds over long voyages—and grieve when a friend dies. Install a Vitality Chamber to pull the fallen back from death, or etch their names onto your ship's memorial wall.

Smuggle cargo, hunt bounties, and choose your allies

Navigate over 1,500 hand-crafted event and quest scenes where your choices depend on who is aboard, which rooms you've built, and how the factions see you. Haul legitimate freight or smuggle contraband, dodge Excise inspections, follow branching questlines across regions, or pull posters off the Bounty Board—bringing outlaws in dead or alive, taking their bribe, or turning on the faction that hired you.

Build your ship your way

  • 11 airships & 55 layouts: unlock everything from a smuggler's cutter and a gnome tinker barge to a noble mage yacht, the fire-forged Kiln, and the storm-chasing Gray Heron—each with 5 distinct layouts and its own hull-bound Signature passive.
  • Custom Ship Builder: earn Ship EXP to design your own starting loadout from the keel up—choosing your rooms, weapons, crew, hull paint, and figurehead, with any unspent budget converting into starting silver.
  • A full refit yard: build, move, or strip out 22 room types, bolt on specialized armor plating, and balance hull weight against lift and fuel.
  • Over 100 fittings, relics & gadgets: combine run-changing ship fittings, permanent quest Relics, crew-worn devices, and clockwork constructs into wild synergies.

Features

  • Play your way: standard seeded voyages, the Daily Charter, Custom Voyages, Free Trade, an optional Non-Ending Voyage mode (checkpoint reset on ship loss), and post-victory Endless Mode (Hard and Relaxed).
  • Scalable challenge: five difficulty settings (Tailwinds to Headwinds), plus 15 levels of Brand Marks for veteran captains.
  • Three campaign endings: hand the void's power to your patron, seize it to rule the skies yourself, or shatter the heart of the Hush to bring magic back to the world.
  • Rich meta-progression: 102 Steam achievements and an in-game Ledger of over 200 feats that unlock new ships, layouts, rooms, lineages, and captain origins.
  • Original 56-track soundtrack (~3 hours of music) with a built-in music player, Steam Cloud saves, continuous autosave, and full support for 31 languages.
