What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“DuckLaserDuck is a game with a lot of interacting mechanics, particularly when it comes to upgrades, weapons, and enemies. With so many possible combinations, it's difficult to anticipate every balance issue or interaction without having people actually play the game.

Early Access lets me continue improving the game while getting feedback from players about what's fun, what isn't, and what could be better. It also gives me the opportunity to expand on the existing content and experiment with new ideas as development continues.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I don't have a specific release date planned at the moment. Development is ongoing, and I'd rather take the time to improve the game than commit to a deadline that might not make sense later.

The goal is to eventually reach a point where the content, balance, and overall gameplay feel complete enough for a full release. How long that takes will depend on development progress and player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to continue expanding and improving the existing content, particularly the variety of enemies, bosses, weapons, upgrades, and special event rooms.

One of my main priorities is making the different weapons and upgrades feel more distinct, with interesting interactions that allow for a wider variety of builds. I'd also like to improve enemy behaviors, expand the variety of encounters, and make each stage feel more unique.

Beyond adding content, I want to continue improving the balance, visuals, performance, and general quality of the game. These plans may change as development progresses, especially based on what players enjoy and what needs the most attention.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“DuckLaserDuck currently has 3 stages, each with its own environments, enemies, and bosses. There are 5 bosses across the stages, with alternate bosses in the first two, and over 100 upgrades with various effects and interactions.

There are also 4 starting weapons, randomly generated maps with branching paths, shops, special events, and 11 unlockable hats.

The game has a complete playable progression from the first stage through the final boss, including a victory ending. However, it's still in development, and there are areas that could use improvement, particularly balancing, enemy variety, and some of the more complicated upgrade interactions.

There may also be bugs or other issues that haven't been discovered yet. I'll continue working on these as development progresses.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I may increase the price as more content and improvements are added, particularly when the game is ready for a full release. However, I haven't made any definite decisions about pricing yet.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback is especially useful for a game like DuckLaserDuck, where there are so many different upgrades, enemies, and possible combinations.

I'm interested in hearing what players think about the balance, which weapons and upgrades they enjoy, which enemies or bosses feel unfair, and what they'd like to see improved.

Players can share suggestions, report bugs, and discuss the game through the Steam Community discussions. I'll use that feedback alongside my own testing to help decide what needs attention and which ideas are worth pursuing.”

About This Game

You're a duck that shoots lasers out of its mouth, and a bunch of bugs stole your eggs. Naturally, the only reasonable thing to do is kill all of them.

DuckLaserDuck is a roguelike bullet-hell shooter where you fight through increasingly difficult hordes of bugs and critters, collecting upgrades that turn your otherwise ordinary mouth lasers into something considerably more destructive.

The goal is to get your eggs back. The method is excessive violence.

Kill bugs, get stronger, kill bugs EVEN BETTER.

Start with one of four weapons, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, and collect upgrades as you make your way through the game.

There are over 100 upgrades to find, and a lot of them interact with each other in interesting ways. You can make your lasers bounce between enemies, explode, freeze things, summon lightning, and plenty of other stuff. Some upgrades might not seem particularly impressive on their own, but combining the right ones can turn a fairly mediocre build into something completely ridiculous.

Of course, you don't get to choose exactly what you find, so sometimes you'll have to get a little creative.

Try not to die.

You'll fight through 3 stages, each with its own enemies, environments, and bosses. Some enemies are relatively easy to deal with on their own, but become a much bigger problem when they're attacking you alongside several other types.

There are also bosses with their own attacks and mechanics to learn, and they're not particularly interested in letting you get your eggs back.

Health isn't exactly plentiful either, so you'll probably want to dodge all those bullets instead of standing there and hoping your upgrades will save you.

Different paths, different builds.

Each run features randomly generated maps made from hand-crafted rooms, with branching paths, shops, special events, and different rewards.

You might find exactly the upgrades you need to make your build work, or you might end up with a completely different combination that turns out to be even better. There's a lot of room to experiment, and plenty of opportunities to make questionable decisions along the way.

There are also hats.

You can unlock and wear 11 different hats.

They don't make your lasers stronger. They just look pretty cool.

Key Features

  • Over 100 upgrades with a variety of effects and synergies to experiment with.

  • 4 starting weapons, all of which you shoot out of your mouth, because you're a duck.

  • 3 stages with different environments, enemies, and bosses.

  • 5 unique bosses with their own attacks and mechanics.

  • Randomly generated maps featuring hand-crafted rooms, branching paths, shops, and events.

  • Lots of different enemies with attacks and behaviors that complement each other.

  • 11 unlockable hats, which are obviously very important.

Anyway, your eggs aren't going to rescue themselves. Go KILL THE BUGS.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Assets and translations are AI generated because I am not a good enough artist and I'm a solo developer. All are based on the original style I created for the game and my own (human) intentions. Some gameplay aspects are AI-enhanced. Gameplay gets significant human playtesting. I have spent over 300 hours working on this game with my own time before LLMs (2022) were released so you will find no shortage of love and care. If you've played before, I think you will find the game experience is much improved. That said, the game is still early access and is lacking on some non-core functionality/diversity, QoL, and polish.
