Hey Steam community, I'm thrilled to let you know that today is the day!

What day, you ask? The day that Krita 5.0, the biggest Krita update in years, is finally here!

It has been a long road and a lot of work to get there, but we hope that you'll find that Krita 5 is more powerful, flexible, and solid than before. We've got a whole new resource system, improved animation tools, better gradients, a brand new storyboarding workflow, a new brush engine, a docker for recording time-lapse videos, and a whole slew of other features and improvements.

Please go check out our Krita 5.0 release notes page for all of the details on what's new, along with images and videos that highlight just about everything that the new Krita has to offer.

I'll keep this post short, because there's a lot of more fun stuff to read over on the release notes page, but I want to send an extra special thank you to all of our supporters here on Steam. The vast majority of you know that Krita is an open source and community-driven tool for artists everywhere, and that we rely on the financial support of the art community to fund development. A big chunk of that funding comes from the users like you who generously support us right here on Steam, and without you it simply wouldn't have been possible to put as much into this release as we have. So, thank you!

Now go check out those release notes!

This is strictly a bug fix release. There are two changes: we fixed an issue with saving a .kra file with an embedded palette, which was broken leading to dataloss, and, for Windows, support for fractional HiDPI display scaling is now disabled by default.

Hey again Krita community,

Today I'm happy to let you all know that we've put out the very first beta version for Krita 5!

It's so totally packed to the brim with new features, changes, bug fixes and other improvements that I kind of don't know where to start... Just about every part of Krita (from brushes and gradients, to animation and assistants, to the user interface and the resource system) has seen refinements, big and small, and we wanted to get it into artists' hands as soon as possible.

If you're interested, you can jump right into testing Krita 5.0 Beta 1 through Steam: just right click on Krita in your Steam Library, click on "Properties", switch to the "Betas" tab, and then select the "beta" branch from the drop down menu.

First, there are a few important points we want to warn you about:

  • Krita 5 has a completely new resource system. Krita no longer loads all brushes, patterns, gradients and so on start-up, but caches the information during the first run. Krita 5 will be slower starting on the first run, quicker on subsequent runs.
  • The way Krita 5 keeps a version history for resources that are edited by the user is not compatible with Krita 4. After using Krita 5, going back to Krita 4 might cause Krita 4 to show duplicate resources.
  • Krita 5 can no longer load vector layers created in Krita 3 and older.
  • Krita files (.kra) and krita brush preset files (.kpp) created with Krita 5.0 are not guaranteed to be compatible with Krita 4!
  • Krita 5.0 fixed an issue with text size in documents. However, opening files created with earlier versions of Krita may require changing a setting to get the originally expected text size.
  • Known issue with this beta: If you run a G’Mic filter, Krita’s settings are temporary reset to default: the settings will be the customized ones again after restarting Krita.

As always you can get an idea about what's changed by reading the full release notes for Krita 5.0 right here. It's got tons of great pictures

Anyway... Give the first beta a try, let us know what you think, and please report any bugs that you come across so together we can make sure Krita 5.0 is one of the best updates yet!

Thanks again,
Emmet

Hey all.

While we're busy getting Krita 5 ready for beta, this week we've got a smaller update for Krita 4 that fixes a handful of bugs. There should be a fix for those of you who have been running into performance issues in the previous version, as well as a few other miscellaneous bug fixes that you can read about over on the official patch notes.

Thanks,
Emmet

Heya, quick update!

I goofed up and somehow forgot to post the release notes for version Krita 4.4.3 that we released (and pushed to you, our loyal Steam supporters ;D) back in March. Hey! Nobody's perfect, right?

Anyway, 4.4.3 is a small and simple update containing mostly bug fixes, and you can read about those right here on Krita's official release notes.

Sorry for the delay and thanks everybody as usual for your support.

Hey Steam, Emmet here once again to deliver a much needed dose of good news! Ahhh, good news, sweet, sweet good news!

We're back again to celebrate the release of Krita 4.3.0, the latest and greatest version of the universe's #1 free, open source and community-driven tool for artists, illustrators, animators, and sourdough bakers (maybe...).

Thanks to the generous support of our community, including those who have chipped in by supporting us right here on Steam, we have more people working more hours on Krita than ever before and with great results: 4.3.0 comes with better performance, way less bugs, and a handful of nifty features to help you create the art that you are here to make!

For a quick summary of the changes, definitely check out the good old patch notes. And, if you'd rather kick back and relax, our friend Ramon Miranda has put together a great patch video which highlights some of the key changes in this new release.

I've said it so many times, I know you guys are getting sick of hearing it, but the truth must be told! Krita is now and will forever be a free, open source and community-driven tool for artists everywhere. No matter who we are, where we grew up, the amount of money we have in the bank, the color of our skin, our gender, our lifestyle, or who we happen to be--Krita is, by its very nature, one of those things that belongs to us all and, hopefully, empowers us all to create whatever art speaks to us.

It sounds lofty because it kind of is. That's what makes Krita different, and it's what makes Krita, Krita!

But none of this would be possible with the ongoing support of users like you. Every dollar, every bug report, every suggestion, every patch and every encouraging word that we receive from our amazing community is channeled right back into Krita's development, making Krita that much better, bit by bit.

And for that, as a fellow Krita user first and developer second, I just can't thank you all enough. I hope that you enjoy Krita 4.3.0 and share your creations with the world, because the way I see it, art, fun and community are some of the things that we all need right now.
- Emmet

PS: Don't forget to share your artwork over on Krita-Artists too!

PPS: Next up... Krita 5!
