One of Germany’s most beautiful and romantic landscapes, and one of Europe’s most charming river valleys, the Mosel Valley, is the location for the Aerosoft’s latest route for Train Simulator, the Mosel Valley (Koblenz-Trier).

This stunning river valley spreads across north-eastern France, south-western Germany and eastern Luxembourg, and is most famous for its spectacular scenery, wine industry and 113km (70 mile) rail line, first opened more than 130 years ago.

As part of the Kanonenbahn (Cannons Railway), the Koblenz to Trier line was built between 1874 and 1879 and has been operated by various state railways, including the Saarbrücken Railway, Deutsche Reichsbahn, Deutsche Bundesbahn and most recently, the Deutsche Bahn.

Departing Koblenz Hauptbahnhof, the line is quick to cross the Mosel River for the first at the Gülser Bridge, shortly after Moselweiß, which itself is home to a large freight yard. The line then follows the left bank of the Mosel to Cochem, all the while passing well-known wine villages such as Winningen and Löf.

After Cochem, the line runs through the most important structure found on the route, the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel – at 4,205 metres long, it was once Germany’s longest railway tunnel until 1985.

After the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel, the line once again crosses the Mosel River near Ediger-Eller on a 281 metre long, five-span steel plate girder bridge. From Bullay, trains cross the well-known dual deck bridge and then the railway viaduct near Pünderich. It is here where the route branches off towards Traben-Trarbach, while the main route leaves the Mosel Valley and proceeds to Trier through to Wittlich.

Just a short distance from Trier, the route meets the Mosel River for the penultimate time, before passing Ehrang with its large depot and goods station, Pfalzel and finally Trier, where a large industrial area and harbour dominate the landscape.

The route today is heavily used by freight traffic crossing Germany onto their final destinations across Europe. A major freight user is the continual flow of heavy iron ore trains from the North Sea ports to the Dillinger Hütte steelworks in the Saarland. Regionalbahn and Regional-Express trains form the majority of passenger trains and until 2014, InterCity services from Trier to Berlin.

Included in the Mosel Valley (Koblenz-Trier) route for Train Simulator, developed by Aerosoft, is the BR 189 electric locomotive in DB livery and a BR 628/928 diesel railcar.

The diminutive DB BR 361 packs a punch when it comes to serious pulling power, and is now available for shunting duties on Germany’s rail network in Train Simulator.

Built between 1956 and 1964, the BR 361 (originally classified as V 60) is a diesel locomotive designed for shunting duties and the occasional light goods train for Deutsche Bundesbahn. In total, 942 of these shunters were produced, with several modifications through their lifetime including new engines and remote control operation.

The first prototype was designed in 1951 as DB had a shortage of small shunters; four prototypes were built in 1955, each built by a different manufacturer - Krupp, Mak, Henschel and Krauss-Maffei. Each featured different engines too, however they still proved to be successful. DB opted for the Maybach GTO 6/GTO 6A engines for their production models, which started to be delivered in 1956.

Even in these early stages of the V 60’s life, some models were modified with stronger frames and a higher adhesive weight increase from 48.3 to 53 tons; these heavier shunters were able to haul an extra six tons of ballast compared to the unmodified variant.

Despite this difference, they were all still classified as V 60s until all of DB’s rolling stock was reclassified, dividing the V 60s into BR 260s and 261s for light and heavy variants respectively. By 1987, they were reclassified again as minor locomotives (Kleinlok), giving them their BR 360/361 grouping as they are known today.

Despite being built primarily as shunters, the V 60s were also used for transporting light freight and passenger trains, and some even saw some departmental use. A plan to replace the V 60 in the early 1980s never came to fruition, and DB set about improving the 25 year old V 60s instead.

The V 60 has a maximum speed of 60km/h (37mph), however the diesel motor needs to be pre-heated before it can run; as a result, the earlier models had to have a small coke oven and carry about 150kg of coke to heat the diesel motor, although newer V 60s used oil burners instead.

Today, many of the 942 locomotives are still in service, with around 400 in service for DB and other examples for various private railways in Germany and beyond, including Turkey and Norway.

The BR 361 for Train Simulator is available in DB Cargo Red livery and features dynamic braking, combination throttle/brake, cab and instrument lighting, in-cab signalling, PZB and SIFA safety systems. Also included are SGGRSS container freight wagons.

The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the DB BR 361 on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Munich-Rosenheim route (available separately and required to play these scenarios).

The Norfolk Southern Big 7s add-on brings two variations of the GE Dash 7 locomotive to Train Simulator.

The 3,600 horsepower four-axle GE B36-7 was built from 1980 until 1985 as successor to the famous U36B ‘U-Boats’. Of the 230 locomotives produced, Seaboard System Railroad (which became part of CSX Transportation in 1986) and Conrail purchased the majority between them. CSX became the last Class 1 railroad to include B36-7s in operational rosters.

The six-axle GE C36-7 predates the four-axle variant, having first been produced in 1978. Unlike the B36-7, however, the majority were exported to overseas markets.

The Norfolk Southern Big 7s for Train Simulator, developed by DigitalTrainModel, includes both the GE B36-7 High Nose and Low Nose variants, plus GE C36-7 ph1 AD, ph1 GSC and ph2 GSC variants in Norfolk Southern livery, and non-driver models as ‘dead’ rolling stock. Other features include class lights, step lights and number board lights, speed recorder, ditch lights and animated front and rear mirrors.

The locomotives are also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the Norfolk Southern Big 7s on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Norfolk Southern Coal District route (available separately and required to play these scenarios).
