What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

Provide content based on user needs
We want to provide the best content in the game we can. Therefore, we need to know what you are expecting from the game, what you like and what you don't like. We will evaluate that input constantly and come up with new content based on your needs.

Get feedback for existing features/content
Releasing the game as an Early Access title gives us the possibility to get direct feedback from you the player about implemented features and the content in general. That feedback helps us to change existing features to your liking during Early Access and in planning future content and features. So in case you don't like a feature we will change it. If content is missing we will do our best to provide that for you. But first we need to know where the spots are which need to be improved.

In a nutshell: Early Access gives us the input we need to shape a better game together with you the gamer.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning for a six-month Early Access phase. During that time more and more content will find its way into the game, bugs which come up will be fixed and suggestions/improvements based on community feedback will be implemented.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Following content will be added during the 6 months Early Access phase:
  • 2 new playable characters
  • 2 new weapons
  • 2 new Co-Op map scenarios with cutscenes and objectives
  • 4 new PvP Maps
  • A vendor hub including a player hideout
  • Additional content based on suggestions and feedback from the community

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version includes following features:
  • 6 playable characters with three different styles (military, police, beach boys n' girls)
  • 4 weapons (a shotgun, 2 ARs, one SMG)
  • 4 different big Co-Op maps with objectives and cutscenes
  • 5 PvP maps
  • Weapon upgrading system
  • Full controller support
  • Up to 4 player split-screen

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the final price shown on the store page represents the price on release. During Early Access phase we will have different discount rates starting at -30%. With each content update the discount will be decreased until it will be removed completely on release day.
With that pricing strategy we basically want to express our "Thank you!" for those of you who want to support us early.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is an essential part of an Early Access game and the most valuable part where we want to involve the community in our development process is feedback. We strongly want your opinion for basically everything, the UI, the gameplay, the content and so on and so forth.

The content of C.Q.C. is also a very important aspect for us. Therefore, we strongly need your input during Early Access to come up with content which is really wanted by you the player. With that input we are able to create the best game experience with those features you want and not with those features we as a developer think will fit the best.

To gather all the needed feedback we will be very actively reading all the posts from you in the Steam Discussion board and will also ask you directly for feedback using this plattform as our major communication tool.

With all that input we are able to create the best experience for our players.
Thank you for your support!

Dev-Blog #3: UI improvement, weapon attachments & current state of the game

Hello fellow players,

this weeks dev-blog is all about UI improvements, weapon attachments, a short update of the current state of the game and the release date and some other information. For each topic I'll share some graphics and screenshots so enjoy reading.

UI improvements - Main Menu & Ingame Menu
I've redone the whole Main Menu to improve usability and the overall navigation. This means in detail:
  • Buttons, dropdowns, etc. are only highlighted when active which helps the controller users to know which menu point is currently selected.
  • Sub menu points can instantly be closed by hitting "B" on the controller. The user doesn't need to scroll to the top to get to the main menu points.
  • Dropdowns can be opened by pressing "A" on the controller and then select the options they want. Before you had to press left/right to switch between the different dropdown options. Now the usability is more intuitive.
  • Since left/right buttons on the controller aren't used anymore, I rebound them to jump to different menu points on the left/right which makes the menu navigation easier and faster.
The result of all those changemes is an intuitive usage of the main menu. The same changes have been made to the ingame menu. This screenshot shows the settings sub-menu ingame:

Weapon attachments
Enough from the menus now! Let's have a look at the weapon attachments.
When enough materials have been collected from zombie drops you are able to upgrade your weapons. Each weapon starts with level 0 and can be upgraded until max level 10. Each upgrade gives you better stats.
Currently following stats are implemented:
  • Amount of projectiles (for pumpgun only)
  • Accuracy
  • Reload time
Beside those stats: each weapon level has a special camo which will be unlocked and some levels will unlock an additional weapon attachment.
Here is a list of attachments which can be achieved:
  • Flashlight
  • Red Dot
  • Silencer (besides the appearance: changes the weapon sound)
More attachments and stats will be implemented after Early Access but the systems are in place and are ready to be improved further.
Here is an example of a level upgrade from an Assault Rifle with level 1 and level 4:

Current state of the game
During our playtests this week we could spot just a few more bugs which could be fixed quite fast, which means that we are very confident to release the Early Access version of C.Q.C. in the mid of January.

Reckless Games website & Twitter
Just a quick reminder regarding Twitter: make sure to follow @PlayReckless there to get short updates during the week.

Dev-Blog #2: HUD changements, bug fixes and upcoming tasks

Ladies and gentleman,

in this weeks dev-blog I will give you an update about what I did the past week, what I am working on next and the current issues which came up.

Past tasks from CW48/49

HUD changements
Most of my working time was related to bug fixing in the past week, that's why I didn't have much time to improve the UI but I started with it and have a rough idea in which direction it should go. In a nutshell, lots of text will be removed and replaced with icons where possible. This results in having more space on the screen which leads to a more clearly UI.
Since I don't have some nice new interface to show I will drop for you a screenshot of the current UI just to have a comparison how it will look like when I'm done with the improvements.

Bug fixing
We did a lot of play testing and found a lot of bugs during those sessions. Most of them were related to the co-op mode. Just to name a number: I fixed almost 150 bugs in the last week, yes you heard right 150! Most of them weren't critical but our goal is to deliver a smooth gameplay even at Early Access launch date.

Upcoming tasks for CW50
Since we found that large number of bugs we will have additional play tests this week just to make sure that those bugs are fixed and no new ones came up.
Besides that our plan to work on smooth loading transitions, weapon attachments and more graphic options has changed to following tasks on which we will work for the upcoming week:
  • Further play tests to make sure that the amount of bugs fixed didn't cause any new bugs.
  • UI improvements: new icons will be generated, text will be replaced with icons and some UI elements will be flattened.

Note that all to-dos are subject to change during the development process.

About This Game

C.Q.C. - Close Quarters Combat is a fun and action-packed top-down shooter experience which you can play together with up to four players in a local split screen match. It provides a variety of maps divided in four settings. Each setting has its own Co-Op and PvP map. In each map you are able to choose your player from six different unique characters and equip them from a selection of four different guns, which you are able to upgrade after each Co-Op mission. CQC has a full controller support and we strongly recommend to use a controller for the best game experience.

Play with your friends in Co-Op

Connect four controllers, call your friends and let the zombie hunting party begin: the Co-Op mode is here!

Make your way together with three friends in four diffeerent Co-Op scenarios. In each scenario you have to complete objectives, kill zombies and fight an endboss at the end of the map.
During gameplay, killed zombies will drop different kind of materials which you can pickup and improve your weapons with. So once you finished all four scenarios you are able to play them again and again to gather more and more materials to make your weapons even better.
But wait, what about the solo players?
Each Co-Op scenario can also be played as a single player experience, which doesn't differ a single bit compared to the Co-Op gameplay.

Play against your friends in PvP

You wanna shoot your friends instead of playing with them in a Co-Op game? No worries, the PvP mode is the right one for you!

Each player is able to choose his weapon and select one from six characters: a military guy and girl, a police guy and girl and a beach boy and girl. Each faction has its own unique PvP skill which can be used during the match.
Currently you can fight on 5 different maps and more are already in progress and will be updated on a regular basis during Early Access development phase.

Upgrade your weapons

Co-Op and PvP is not enough but you're addicted to C.Q.C.? Then "weapon upgrades" is the answer!

Gather five different materials by killing Zombies in Co-Op game mode to upgrade your weapons with better stats and make them look more and more badass. With increased weapon stats you are able to master higher difficulties, which will give you better materials to improve your weapons even more.

So what you are waiting for? Grab your controller, get C.Q.C. and have a good time!
