What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Currently, Starcom:Nexus is fully playable with a high level of polish. Players can explore 40+ star systems, fight, talk and trade with a half dozen different alien races, research 100+ technologies, customize their ship and follow numerous storylines and side quests. But the adventure isn't complete.

That's where you come in.

Players of our closed beta tests have been both enthusiastic about the game's direction and extremely helpful in refining the gameplay. Now we're looking for feedback and suggestions from a larger audience as we finish the story and populate the rest of this mysterious universe. The current Early Access version has about 6-9 hours of game play on the main story depending on play style and will get substantially more as it approaches full release.

Please note that version updates in Early Access may not be compatible with previous saves. We will announce save-breaking updates well in advance and allow players to continue previous games with earlier build versions.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Minimally 5-6 months, possibly up to 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The biggest change between Early Access and the full release will, of course, be much more content and a completed story line.

The following are currently planned additions:

  • More planet anomalies and star systems
  • Expanded Research Tree
  • Additional Ship Modules
  • Deeper narrative interaction with alien races
  • More alien races
  • More special events and celestial phenomena
  • Full controller support

The following we hope to add, depending on player demand:

  • More experimental combat features such as ship takeover, etc.
  • Procedural sandbox universe
  • Localization and support for additional languages
  • Voice acting for the major characters
  • Mod support

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is close to feature complete:

  • Fast-paced combat with fully destructible ships
  • Disposition-based AI. Some aliens can be turned from friend to foe and vice versa.
  • Custom ship building with a hex-based layout: Plasma cannons, Missiles, Armor, Reactors, and Engines
  • Improve your ship's abilities with 100+ Research Technologies
  • Explore dozens of star systems and planets with over 70 unique planetary encounters
  • Cool celestial phenomena to discover such as nebulae, warp gateways, rifts, etc
  • A story that progresses through dialogue and in-game events

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the game will be priced lower (about 30%) during Early Access because of the incomplete main storyline.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I've setup a Discord server that already has an active community from the Beta tests and I'll be checking the Steam Community hub almost every weekday. I also post weekly updates on the game's development on its website: http://www.starcomnexus.com/

In addition players can give feedback anytime in game by pressing "F8."”

Starcom: Nexus is now available!

Today's the day!

I'm really excited, and a bit nervous. After two years of development and five rounds of closed betas, Starcom: Nexus is finally available on Steam Early Access.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/863590/Starcom_Nexus/

The feedback from beta testers has helped make each version better than the last. Here are some of the anonymous feedback comments submitted by testers:

"Hi developers!, I tried to find something wrong with this game but I must say that I failed. I totally love it!"

"Hey everyone, I LOVE this game, great job!"

"So, I was just going to have a look, and now the night is over and I am through the game [...Spoilers removed...] This probably is the worst beta test feedback you ever got, since a beta test is all about bugs normally, but seriously, this pre-early access-beta runs better than a lot of released games by larger developing teams. Thank you for letting me participate and getting a first impression of Starcom: Nexus."

Of course, this is far from the end of the road. I expect the game to spend at least another six months in Early Access, probably more. I hope you will help me make Starcom: Nexus one of the best single player space adventures ever.

How can you give feedback?

There are lots of ways for you to give feedback or ask questions about the game:

I'll be checking all those channels almost every day.

http://www.starcomnexus.com/closed-beta-mailing-list-sign-up/

Beta testers will be able to access the game either:
  • With a Steam Beta Key. These keys will expire when the game enters Early Access.
  • As a download. The download doesn't expire (but also doesn't automatically update).
This will likely be the second to last closed beta before Early Access. I haven't locked down the exact date yet, but expect an announcement soon. :)

“This evolution circles us back to Starcom: Nexus which, as it stands, is easily the absolute and utter best of the top-down sandbox-style exploration space-based combat "RPG" titles I have seen.”
