What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Currently, Starcom:Nexus is fully playable with a high level of polish. Players can explore nearly 100 star systems, fight, talk and trade with a half dozen different alien races, research 120+ technologies, customize their ship and follow numerous storylines and side quests. But the adventure isn't complete.

That's where you come in.

Early Access players have been both enthusiastic about the game's direction and extremely helpful in refining the gameplay and balance. But the game still has room for improvement and needs a satisfying ending.

Please note that major content updates in Early Access may not be compatible with previous saves. We will announce save-breaking updates well in advance and allow players to continue previous games with earlier build versions. These typically happen every 6-8 weeks.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game entered Early Access in December 2018. At the time I projected a minimum of 6 months, probably closer to 12 months. As of March 2019, I think that assessment is still accurate.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The major change between the current Early Access version and the eventual final release will be the late game and ending.

The following are currently planned additions:

  • More planet anomalies and star systems
  • Expanded Research Tree
  • Additional Ship Modules
  • Deeper narrative interaction with alien races
  • More alien races
  • More special events and celestial phenomena
  • Full controller support

The following we hope to add, depending on player demand:

  • More combat features such as fighter modules, ship takeover, etc.
  • Procedural sandbox universe
  • Localization and support for additional languages
  • Mod support
  • Support for additional platforms (Mac, Linux)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is close to feature complete:

  • Fast-paced combat with fully destructible ships
  • Disposition-based AI. Some aliens can be turned from friend to foe and vice versa.
  • Custom ship building with a hex-based layout: Plasma cannons, Missiles, Armor, Reactors, and Engines
  • Improve your ship's abilities with 100+ Research Technologies
  • Explore close to 100 star systems and planets with over 120 possible unique planetary encounters
  • Cool celestial phenomena to discover such as nebulae, warp gateways, rifts, alien probes, etc
  • A story that progresses through dialogue and in-game events

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the game will be priced lower (about 30%) during Early Access because of the incomplete main storyline.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since the game has entered Early Access I've been involved with the community by:
  • Checking and responding to suggestions and feedback in the Community hub almost every day.
  • Logged into the game's Discord server and chatting with players frequently.
  • Following the in-game anonymous feedback system that players can access at any time by pressing 'F8'.
  • I also post updates on the game's progress to the official website at least once a week: http://www.starcomnexus.com/

Version 0.12.4 now live on main branch!

Starcom: Nexus has now been updated to 0.12.4 on the main, "default" branch.

The previous default was 0.10.3, so if that's the last one you played, there are quite a few changes. Here is the spoiler-free list of the major ones if you missed last weekend's update.
  • Universe is now generated with a hybrid procedural/designed system. Some sectors are procedurally generated, some are designed, some are a combination.
  • Bigger universe. There are now close to 100 star systems with over 300 planets, over half of which have some kind of anomaly or discovery.
  • 130+ unique planetary anomalies/scan discoveries.
  • New alien races.
  • New technologies.
  • New weapons.
  • New missions/side-quests.
  • New achievements.
  • Updated trade system.
  • Experimental difficulty settings.
  • Improved controller support.
  • Players can now leave notes on the map by right-clicking.
  • Improvements to the mission log including search function.
  • Updates to localization.
  • Various balances changes.
  • Misc. bug fixes.

Save games are not compatible with content updates, but if you were in the middle of a game, don't panic. Your save game is still there and can be accessed by rolling back your client. The version you probably want is Beta 0.10 Stable. See here for instructions.

As always, if you encounter any bugs or have any questions or suggestions, submit them via F8, post in the discussion forum or join the game's Discord.

Thanks for playing Starcom: Nexus!

“This evolution circles us back to Starcom: Nexus which, as it stands, is easily the absolute and utter best of the top-down sandbox-style exploration space-based combat "RPG" titles I have seen.”
