What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“To allow users to start experiencing Planetary Settlers, and help drive its future development through suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I anticipate about a year and a half, but this could vary depending on how much I decide to add, and other unforeseen factors.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current version covers all the known main planets of the solar system. However, I plan to add the following, and more:
  • (Done) I plan to move to using Steam cloud saves to preserve game saves, and allow seamless transfer of saves from computer to computer.
  • I plan to expand and include all the planets in the solar system (done), as well as Pluto (now a dwarf planet) (done), some of the more interesting moons, and more.
  • I plan to add even more missions to the existing levels, including crafting missions.
  • (Done) I plan to implement a leveling system, where nanites determine how much you can increase your abilities.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Planetary Settlers is a playable game with a main quest line and some side quests. I consider it to be in Beta now. Most of the mechanics of the game are now in place. There is enough there already to get an idea of what the full game might be like, and enough enjoy as well. Be aware that game saves could (slight possibility) be overwritten as features are expanded in the near term, but I will try to prevent this as much as possible. They have been preserved so far (except for a bug I fixed), and I anticipate that they will stay throughout the remainder of development. Features already implemented include:
  • Gravity of each world is set to the actual gravity of the world
  • Customizable abilities, which can be adjusted at will, based on the ability points you have collected.
  • All the main planets are implemented (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune)
  • The Sun, Moon and Pluto have been additionally implemented
  • Quizzes (currently 11 in the game), and additional puzzles
  • Level Medals (you can earn medals in each level for accomplishing certain goals), Descriptions have been added.
  • 3D Labyrinths (currently three in the game, planning on adding more)
  • Main quest story line, to include currently a text based ending (planning to upgrade this)
  • Adjustable character capabilities: speed, jump, jet pack, projectile launch speed, light strength
  • Customizable colors for the flashlight, projectiles, and projectile glow
  • Ability to grab, move, and release objects
  • Items, that when collected, are broken down into their elements (viewable as a periodic table, describing how many grams you collected).
  • Crafting (currently for the Jupiter base repair mission)

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to raise the price for full release. If you grab it now, you will have it even after full release, for the current price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I am looking for suggestions for improvement, for missions, etc... Looking for feedback on how to extend playability and the "fun factor". I already have some ideas for this, but am open to more!”

About This Game

Summary:
This is a solo indie edutainment game with real benefits! You can learn facts about the solar system and science as you play! Planetary Settlers is a family friendly video game about exploring the solar system. Experience realistic gravity as you control Blue 42 on each planet, completing mini games, uncovering secrets, and completing quizzes to enhance your abilities as you explore and help humanity reach out into the solar system!

Early Access:
Planetary Settlers is playable, with many more features in development, and you have the opportunity to suggest additional features and provide other suggestions to guide the future of the game. I currently have the inner solar system, with a level each for Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, and Mars. The sun, Jupiter and Pluto have also been added, with the rest of the planets on the way.

Planned updates:
  • Add a level for each of the other planets (done), as well as Pluto (done), some of the more notable moons, and more!
  • Add text color customization option
  • (Done) Add more minigames to each of the existing inner planet levels.
  • (Done) Add a leveling system (e.g. more nanites gives more powerful abilities)

Details:
Planetary Settlers is currently in development. Take control of an advanced AI robot named Blue 42, and explore the vast solar system, to include the different planets and many of the moons. Explore our possible future in the year 2142, with realistic environments based on imagery and data we have gathered on the various planets and moons. Gravity is accurate, when you jump, throw a rock, or fly, you will experience the actual gravity of the planet / moon.

Blue 42 has the following features, which can be enhanced through collecting more nanites:
  • Various technologies to shield against the harsh environments of space and various worlds, to include extreme heat, extreme cold, low pressure, high pressure, corrosive chemicals, radiation, and harmful dust.
  • A color customizable light, with adjustable brightness
  • An color customizable projectile generator, a "gravity probe" to see the effect of gravity on each world, and to have fun with. You can even make the projectiles glow a color of your choosing. More nanites allow you to increase velocity
  • Treads, to move along the surface. Can be adjusted to go very fast if you collect enough nanites!
  • Tread jumper - Jumps by launching the treads down quickly (sort of like how a grasshopper hops). Power can be boosted to allow you to leap over a building!
  • Jetpack to fly!
  • Grabber beam to hold and release large objects. Note: It is fun to throw things by grabbing them, running at high velocity, and releasing, or by grabbing, rotating quickly and releasing.

This game is being developed first for Windows PCs / laptops, but I plan to expand into other languages and other platforms later.
