What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is, far and away, the biggest project our small team has undertaken. We’ve put nearly four years of development into Depths of Sanity, and ever since we had our first playable build we’ve been bringing the game to festivals, events, and meet-ups to get player feedback to guide the game’s experience.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 really hampered our ability to do this.

Early Access gives us the chance to have players like you meaningfully impact the game’s development in a lot of key ways. Creating a fully underwater metroidvania has been a daunting process, and making sure we’re delivering best we can on the premise - from the environments, to the controls, to the mechanics and the story - is incredibly important to us.

It was our supporters who helped Depths of Sanity evolve from a barely realized tech demo to the game it is today, and we think Early Access is the best way to keep this relationship growing.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our Early Access launch in October will contain the game’s first three chapters (out of six). This would be about 45% or so of the experience, and it will contain all mechanics, story elements, boss fights, and secrets of the final game.

After this initial launch, we’re aiming to be in Early Access for 6 - 8 months, with a new chapter releasing every 2 - 2.5 months depending on your feedback.

Your save data will carry through the additional patches and chapter additions, which will add even more to previous sections. For example, when we release Chapter 4, you’re not just getting a new biome and story segment - you’ll be uncovering new tools and weapons that can help you more deeply explore the previous sections.

This staggered approach will help us not only improve the upcoming sections and provide a steady drip of new playable areas, but also make retroactive tweaks based on your input.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will contain the full game with all six full chapters, a new game+, and potentially a boss rush, along with other great modes and ideas you suggest for us during development.

For buying into the early access version, you’ll not only be able to influence the game’s development, but you will eventually get all of these chapters and features as they are rolled out prior to the full launch.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Our current build contains Chapters 1 - 3 of the game in their entirety, including all gameplay mechanics, story sequences, boss fights, secrets, and more. More chapters and additions to previous areas will be added every 2 - 2.5 months depending on player feedback.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes! The game is currently cheaper to reward those who want to support it early. The game will remain at this price until the full game leaves early access, at which point it will go up in price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to have a constant communication with our Early Access supporters. In addition to bi-weekly updates that will keep you in the loop on what exactly we’re working on during each sprint, you’ll be able to reach us in a lot of ways, including our discord server, Steam forums, emails, and Twitter. We’ll have more detailed info for how to submit feedback as we get closer to launch.

A big thank you to all of you who choose to support us!”
