What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“ATLAS is one of the most ambitious online worlds of all time and while everything we have listed in the feature section will be there around Early Access launch, we are going to need the feedback, insight, and creativity of the game players to build on that foundation and balance the game optimally over a period of time.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“ATLAS will be an Early Access title for approximately 2 years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“ATLAS is going to better balanced, and have even more content and features than the initial game driven by player feedback and whatever direction players desire to see the game evolve in.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Everything in the features section will be there around Early Access Launch and the game will be an unparalleled massively multiplayer experience from Day One.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“ATLAS will increase in price when the game is fully launched.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll be taking feedback from players across multiple social platforms, conducting livestreams, open-forums and hosting events where we can meet players in person and gather their feedback.”

Captain's Log 32: Blackwood Update and Singleplayer Mode!

Ahoy Pathfinders!

We have much to share! Let's get down to business, shall we?

Mega Update 3
Mega Update 3 is on the horizon and we’re excited to share some more teasers and information!

New Cosmetics: Sail Skins!

Unfurl new sails against the sky with new Sail Cosmetics. The new cosmetics for small and medium sails lend the appearance of a delicate Junk or Sampan rig with bamboo slats which harkens back to the Far East inspired sail design preceding Western square sails. Opt for the new large sail cosmetic to imbibe your ship with a commanding battle galley aesthetic and make it stand out as the flagship of your fleet!

New Islands!

More new, unique Islands will be landing on the ATLAS giving you more opportunities to own land, explore, and unlock new Discoveries.

New Creature: Sea Horse!

The elegant Sea Horse can be found in the deepest trenches of the ocean. It has a calm demeanor unless provoked which will anger this aquatic species, resulting in a deadly attack. They have two known methods of poisoning their foes, it can either be through the form of a venomous bite in close quarters or a toxic substance shot from their snout at medium range. The poison is said to be quite potent with strong penetrative abilities that have been reported to even pierce through armor and golden age infused metals used to build vessels.

While generally a solitary creature, it seeks out the assistance from its kin when in danger. A few daring adventurers have yearned to saddle this beautiful marine equine, however, due to its hostile nature when disturbed, it has been an impossible task.

Single Player Mode
We’re excited to say that we are currently working on a single player experience! This has been a common request from many of you and it is currently being prototyped by our team. We expect that we will have it ready to test on a beta branch in Mid July. This mode will be a true single-player mode; you won’t have to run a server in the background using up your precious memory! Every piece of content will be available, that includes the same massive world, with each and every island.

With single player, there always comes the question for whether we plan to allow users to play in a listen/local server mode. This isn’t something we’re working on at the moment, and pending on how the single player works out, it may be something we consider in the future.

ISO: Blackwood

The standalone map (and server) experience still needs a little more time in the oven, so prepare for a dark twist on the Equatorial biome with ISO: Blackwood coming Mid July!

Explore the heart of the jungle or settle in rolling farmland. Silent eddies run before your boat as you make your way through the slick reeds of The Mire. Wade through thick green waters teeming with dangerous creatures, rare plant life, and the occasional Gorgon to find buried treasure and lost corpses. Approach the ancient serpent boss, Anacython, if you dare!

Please note, this is not a map that will be supported on our Official Network, as it was designed to give players all the mechanics that ATLAS can offer hosted as a single server, without the use of a database.

Live Game Updates
Our patches can focus on various different things. They may be aimed to hotfix a bug introduced by new content, improve performance, resolving outstanding technical issues, and much more. This past week, the primary focus for our live updates was QOL improvements and balance changes. A lot of these changes were influenced by your suggestions and feedback, so keep it coming, Pathfinders! We understand you may feel something is too strong, too weak, or tedious - let us know, and we’ll do our best to improve the game experience. We truly appreciate all the support you’ve shown the game and will continue to work on improving it.

Current Version: v207.991 - Fixed bolas releasing creatures prior to their timer ticking down entirely. v207.99 - Fixed a bug which prevented tames and crew on ships from not having their claim timer refreshed on PvE. To refresh their timers, you will need to board the boats they're on. - Fixed a bug which would result in the XP Curse lasting permanently (retroactive) - Fixed a bug which prevented firing cannons which were placed on the top deck above gunports - Beds can only be used to spawn on after their initial respawn cooldown has cleared v207.981 - Inactive PvP boats will now automatically destroy after 4 weeks of inactivity - Enabled auto-destruction for decayed structures on Official Servers. - Sunken ships will always destroy after 5 days on Official Servers. This will clear the icon from your maps too, as long the area where the boats were sunk have been revisited. - Gunports can now be opened again without cannons (i.e you can now fish out of them again) - Fixed some invalid cannon placements / shooting edge cases. - Open gunports will obstruct firing from any cannons that are not explicitly linked to them, either by dismounting the shooter or blocking the projectile. - Fixed a Sail placement exploit. - New game.ini mode for Sunken Ships /script/shootergame.shootergamemode DestroyDeadShipsIntervalTime=0 // Defaults to 0, meaning sunk ships would last forever and set to 2592000 for officials. v207.972 - Fixed an issue where NPCs on a Galleon's front NPCs would not replicate, due to the Captain being all the way in the back. This would have previously shown Missing NPCs, even if they were stationed. v207.971 - Updated localization for German, French, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Swedish. - Gunports will no longer open if they do not have a cannon snapped to it - Cannons using gunport-snaps now check for near-by freely-snapped cannons before snapping, in order to prevent multiple cannons shooting from one gunport. - Fixed the Global Ship Limit counting Sunken Ships v207.95 - Increase torpedo ammo weight to 12 - Increase the torpedo launcher weight to 240 - Reduced the weight bonus torpedo launcher receives from closed gunports to 20% - Bola CC duration reduced to 6 seconds on players - Bola release time now reduced to 0.5 seconds when removing it from a player - Torpedo crafting costs updated. Reduced by approximately 20% and updated metal to require 2 types of ingots. Mythos requirement unchanged. - Flame damage now eliminates ballista harpoons - Improved server performance on Golden Age grids as AoD enemies will only be networked to clients once they've awoken. - Ballista Harpoon reload time has increased (it'll take longer to reload) v207.93 - Mortar and Pestle slots increased to 40 - Soap Blueprint added to Cooking Pot and Grill - Large Storage Box slots increased to 100 - Small Storage Box slots increased to 40 - Sugars now stack to 500 (increased) - Thatch now stacks to 1000 (increased) - Grenade weight increased to 5 - Firegel, Gunpowder, Blasting powder, Mythos and Coral can now be stored in the ship resource box. - Reduced Grenade damage to players by 33%, to NPC Crew and Creatures by 10% - Increased Playershop health to 12000 - Reduced base damage of Blackjacks by 10% and reduced the Fall Swing damage by 65% - Doubled stamina cost of shield bash - Fire Elemental now takes 50% more damage from Shotguns and 100% more damage from Ballista - Fixed ""Fail" sound line for the medkit using male voiceline for female characters - Fixed being able to place wallhooks on demolishable resources to prevent floating structures - Fixed being able to place triangle foundations on top of beds - Player Name is now included in the tribe log when scuttling ships or demolishing it via a shipyard - Fixed a bug which allowed you to move whilst bola'd - You can now base on non-allied PvE boats, and we've added an actionwheel entry to force non-allied characters off of your ship in PvE v207.91 - Torpedo Damage reduced by 45% - Boats will no longer sink when overweighted or overcrewed if they are fully anchored (green anchor) - Settlement Mode: Claim Flags now appear on the World Map for the grid region you're currently on - Submarines docked on hangars now retain their colour after server restarts - Prevented firing from gunports if the gunport has not fully opened. This is to resolve crews being dismounted as they were blocked for firing too soon - Quest skills are blacked out with a silhouette when not learned - Cocoa can now be crafted properly in irrigated grills - Fixed FPV reload animation playing when switching from TPV to FPV with the Crossbow - Fixed an issue where servers that were running for more than 4 days consecutively without reboot would have choppy water on the client. Please note on Thursday, we plan to deploy a patch which will do the following - Increase torpedo ammo weight to 20 - Increase the torpedo launcher weight to 300 - Reduced the weight-reduction bonus torpedo launcher receives from closed gunports to 20% v207.9 - Networking range for players on ships is now the same as players not on ships (~34,000 units) - Networking range for unseated NPCs on ships are now about 18,000 units, and seated NPCs are now about 9,000 units. - Fixed Crows no longer flying to attack. - Fixed Shipyards at max storage capacity (300) fail to create ships. - Fixed being unable to gain any stamina after sailing to another server with a stamina debuff active from using any feat, for example, "reload overdrive" feat on a ship. Previously you would have had the debuff permanently until you die and respawn v207.81 - Improved third-person view offset so that it now positions at the average head height rather than the center of the character's capsule. This should improve how it feels when the camera is brushed up against a collision in the world. v207.8 - If a launched torpedo hits within the first 3.75 seconds of being fired, it will do significantly reduced damage - Torpedo overall damage reduced by 20% - Torpedo overall projectile lifespan reduced by 10% - Torpedo and Torpedo Launcher crafting cost has been increased - Fixed hotkey assignments to save on relog - Readjusted Marker UI location when minimap is open to prevent overlap - You can now use "prying eyes" to look inside lock chests if they are your own company's boxes - Cannons/Puckles will no longer fire in peacetime if the structure does not own the claim and the target is a player or tame - Significant shoreline data memory optimization

Captain's Log #31: Sharpshooting Meowtiny!

Ahoy, Pathfinders!

June marks the 6-month anniversary since ATLAS’ initial launch to Steam Early Access. We’d just like to take a moment to say “Thank you!” to all of our players and fans for your support over the last 6 months and to reaffirm to all of you now that the development team is still committed to making ATLAS the best game it can possibly be. Especially with the help of your continued feedback and support; please keep your ideas, concerns, complaints, and reports coming.

For this Captain's Log, we'd like to give you an early glance at some of the content that'll be making its way ashore with the upcoming Mega-Update!

Head to the shooting range and pull out your pistols, it's time to brush up on your marksmanship!

Introducing our latest weapon, the Hydra Revolver!

This new and improved revolver allows for up to 6 shots before reloading! So if your aim sucks, or you have multiple targets, this will be your weapon of choice.

Curious about what else we'll be adding? Careful, you might just kill the...

Found in caves, the cat makes a purrfect pet for contaminating enemy pirates! It can be tamed by hand-feeding, but you better be sneaky, as they’re known to be quite skittish. After a cat has been tamed, order it to ‘hunt’ and wait for your tamed feline friend to catch a rodent, either a rat or a mouse. Each offering the pathfinder something different:

  • The mouse can be used to create a powerful delicacy and makes players temporarily immune to catching the plague.
  • The rat, infected by the contagious bubonic plague, can be loaded into catapults and launched at your enemies. The plague is a temporary debuff which can spread to others if you’re not careful!

We realize this may not be everyone's tankard of grog, but don't worry, there’s more to come and we can’t wait to share it with all of you. Stay tuned!

Bug Report Channels

We have added a bug reporting channel to the ATLAS Official Discord. We appreciate your bug reports and we aim to collate and act upon them as efficiently as possible. In order to facilitate this further, we have shared some guidelines there on how to how to make a clear bug report including information that is relevant to maximizing the way in which we sort, investigate, and debug.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on Bug Reports posted on our Official Forums but we are finding Discord is very conducive to investigating and resolving them.

We have enabled Nitro Server Boosting for the Official ATLAS Discord. Fellow pirates of the Discord who boost the server will find treasure awaiting them!

What do you receive for boosting the Atlas Discord?

About This Game

From the creators of ARK: Survival Evolved comes ATLAS - a massively multiplayer first-and-third-person fantasy pirate adventure. ATLAS will host up to 40,000 players exploring the same Globe simultaneously, with an unprecedented scale of cooperation and conflict! Stake your claim in this endless open world as you conquer territory, construct ships, search for buried treasure, assemble forts, plunder settlements and hire crew to join your powerful growing armada. Start small then expand your spheres of influence from a small island, up to an unstoppable pirate empire that spans across the oceans. Wage battle against enemy fleets as you singlehandedly command large ships of war using the captaining system (or divide up to the responsibilities among your trusted lieutenants), or take control of any weapon directly with your own character. Dive deep into the briny water to explore permanent sunken wrecks and recover salvage, unearth the loot from procedurally-generated Treasure Maps and challenge zones, or complete challenging main questlines. Team up with other aspiring adventurers and sail into the vast ocean to discover new lands rich with region-specific elements, tame exotic natural and mythical creatures, raid forgotten tombs, confront powerful ancient gods and even build and administer your own colonies, cities, and civilizations to dominate the ATLAS in this ultimate quest for fortune and glory!

MMO On the Grandest Scale

Physically sail in real-time across the vast oceans with the proprietary server network technology. Explorers will voyage to over 700 unique landmasses across 45,000 square kilometers, with thousands of Discovery Zones, and ten distinct world regions each having their own unique resources, creatures, secrets, and environment hazards! There is a separate PvE ATLAS for players who don't wish to play any PVP.

Construct the Ship of Your Dreams, Plank by Plank!

Build drydocks and start with a dinghy rowboat, basic raft, tiny sloop or nimble schooner, moving on up to your own versatile brigantine or titanic galleon capable of transporting hundreds of crew and extensive cargo. Name your ship in big bold letters, paint and copy your own pirate flag and custom-place all the pieces of your ship -- which sails and where, planks and gunports, every single structure piece has a physical Weight and Material -- to function exactly how you want.

Captain your Crew!

Recruit real players and AI crew from freeports or rescue seasoned crew from destroyed “Army of the Damned” shipwrecks to man distinct stations on your boat! Set sail and explore the ATLAS with them to gain experience and level up their stats or gear, as well as levelling your Ship. Your crew are versatile! Whether on land, or ship, or even riding behind your animal companions on emplacements, they can man weapons of all kinds-- cannons, swivel guns, siege engines, turrets, and even gigantic mortars, many with dynamically swappable ammo types including grapeshot, chainshot, spikeshot, liquid fire, and more! Instruct them to board enemy ships and help you conquer the seas! Keep their stomachs full and their pockets full of gold lest you want a mutiny in your hands! Take on the Captain’s Wheel or divide up the command responsibilities via Lieutenant Podiums to direct the Ship’s assignable weapon systems, sails, and stations, including standing-orders or manual grouped fire. Or, walk up to any station and take control of it yourself!

Pirate PVP to the Limit

Everything is up for grabs including player’s ships, their crew, their pets, their forts, their land, and their booty. If you can get your hands on it, you can take it. A ship’s permanent logbook tells the tale of their legendary travel, exploits and ownership.

Be the Hero or Villain you were meant to be

MMO-scale character progression systems include, at launch, over 15 Disciplines with over 300 Skills, in a vast unlockable tree. New "Feat" system allows for active and passive bindable character abilities, while new stat-buff system allows innumerable abstract statistics to be modified by Skills, Items, and Armor. And now, everything has scalable stats, including structures, and can be progressively Upgraded!

This is Who You Are

Extensive character visual customization enables an endless range of realistic (and not-so-realistic) characters, with a vast array of sliders, morphs, muscle tones, and tweakable values. You can even per-pixel design your own permanent tattoos (and then draw warpaint on top of that too!). If someone exists in the real world, they should be creatable in ATLAS! Best-in-class dynamic hair growth and real-time aging systems allow you to get old and... pass on your legacy? (Or find a fountain of youth!).

Endless Adventure

Full Quest and Waypoint systems, with sub-quests and rewards, for major goals -- while procedural treasure maps and challenge zones also ensure there's always something new to find out over the horizon.

Intense Action

Tactical melee combat systems with blocks, parries, dodges, character motion, optional shields, stunning and strength-varying strikes, directional attacks, and more for use in either first or third person perspectives. Fists, swords, maces, blackjacks, daggers, and much more give you tremendous options to pick the right weapon for the job. Meanwhile, period-appropriate-weaponry with skill-based active reload systems include flintlock pistols, muskets, blunderbuss, and more -- just be sure to keep your powder dry!

Claim What's Yours

Form a company, claim territory and apply taxation and behavior rules to that which you own: be a benevolent governor, a feudal lord, or a ruthless dictator. Territory ownership is visualized on your dynamic zoomable World Map, with Fog of War obscuring uncharted regions and Shroud of War hiding enemy territories out of sight range. Contest other government's ownership of land, structures, or ships to expand your empire! The top large-scale Spheres of Influence on the Official ATLAS' are visualized in real-time on the PlayATLAS homepage. Design your own custom flag per-pixel to apply to your claims, to be famous (or infamous)!

Creatures Great and Small

More than 50 creatures at launch varying from breedable utilitarian farm animals & shoulder mounted parrots and monkeys that offer unique buffs, all the way to magical mermaids and gigantic sea monsters of legend. Creatures can be found in their logical regions, but take skill and tactics to tame using new mechanics, while also gaining the most benefit and fertility from their natural biomes. Ferry these temperamental creatures across the vast oceans in a virtual Noah's Ark to trade in exotic locales.

Freeports to Meet & Greet

Level-capped starter zones allow you to learn the ropes and meet new players in a safe space before you venture out into the great unknown. Where the wind and destiny takes you beyond that, is up to the gods!

Build Your Empire

Overhauled building systems include automatic foundational elevation adjustment, dynamic tile type swapping, improved snap detection & previewing, integrated plumbing systems, per-pixel-paintable everything, beast-of-burden harness attachments for field-gun and carriages, and much more! Survival systems newly include, among other aspects, Vitamins benefits and deficiencies, with recipe & cooking skills and varying ingredient qualities.

Powerful Mod and Server Functionalities

Want to build a World War II Spitfire? Or a Flying Fortress bomber with fully walkable interior and gun stations, carrying troops loaded with machine guns and rocket launchers? How about a Tank? An Aircraft Carrier to play out the Battle of Midway on an expansive scale? How about an Arcadian Steampunk Airship floating through a cloud-world? These examples and much more are provided with the ATLAS Dev Kit, where you can make effectively create whatever large-scale MMO action game you want to see happen, all supported by the database-driven network technology that powers ATLAS. Unofficial ATLAS' can be of any size and configuration, while a visual map tool lets server hosts layout their own complete custom world of islands, continents, terrain features, spawns, resources, hazards, underwater zones, dynamic weather, biome configurations, ecology, and an infinite number of other configurable features -- all dynamically streamed to the client during gameplay. The possibilities are endless!

Far, Far More

Stay tuned for more details on the extensive features and content of ATLAS. This brief sampling is just the tip of the iceberg (though be sure to watch out for those in the polar regions, as they're extremely dangerous to ship hulls!!).

A Brief History of ATLAS

Long-ago, far above the watery world of ATLAS there once existed a magic-powered “Golden Age”-- where great Empires of the Sky lived at peace alongside magical creatures, flourishing upon floating continents above the clouds, all powered by a magical source of energy known as the Heart of the Goddess, granted by the powerful beings who dwell in the stars beyond. However, a powerful warlord known as Xevos sought to unite the human civilizations over the magickind, and launched a war that broke the Heart into pieces, unleashing a wave of destruction that shattered the floating landmasses and plunged them into the waters below.

Many generations later, as living memory of the “Sundering” has faded into legend and the once-plentiful magical energy has long since dissipated, descendants of the protectors of the Heart of the Goddess -- known as “Pathfinders” -- emerge from their provincial oceanic lives to explore the new continents and islands, and seek out the power they may yet contain. Across the vast new world they’ll encounter hostile creatures, technological remnants of the Golden Age past, and ultimately the undying spirit of Xevos himself and his soulless “Army of the Damned”, still intent on recovering the pieces of the Heart of the Goddess to raise the continents once again under his vision.

If the latest generation of Pathfinders can outwit and outgun Xevos and his legions, and recover the Heart pieces for themselves, they will be faced with the very same choice: whether to attempt to restore the old world, or build a new better one…
