What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Territory Control originally began in 2016 as a mod for King Arthur’s Gold. Over time it grew into much more than just a mod, essentially becoming a game within a game, and developed a dedicated community of its own.

In late 2020, work began on Territory Control 2 as a fully standalone title, alongside the creation of a custom engine built from scratch in C# and C. After just a few months of steady progress, an early version became available as a Patreon reward for members of the original community.

During this period, development accelerated significantly. Many new features were added and refined through testing and feedback, including robust tools for creating custom content such as maps and mods. At the same time, interest from players continued to grow, and the game’s lore and scope began to expand far beyond what was initially planned.

This community enthusiasm ultimately shaped the vision of Territory Control 2 into something much larger in scale. Releasing the game into Early Access is therefore the natural next step, as it allows players to continue enjoying the game as it evolves while also contributing directly to its development and helping to guide its future direction.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Most likely 2–3 years. It’s hard to say precisely, since the game’s content and development are very fluid and adaptive, and the lore is continuously evolving. The plan is to leave Early Access within a few years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full release will feature complete modding support, including full Steam Workshop integration, additional game modes such as Siege with wave defense, and a continuously expanding lore and industrial system. Building will include structural integrity for more realistic physics.

There will be deeper customization in the blueprint and augmentation systems, along with new fabrication methods. Advanced industries such as chemical production, heavy industry, and magitronics will be introduced. Future updates will also expand population management, roleplay mechanics, geopolitics, economy, and diplomacy.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Development experienced some delays due to life circumstances and major internal changes to the engine, progression, and gameplay. Within the community this phase is also known as the “minor crafting rework.” Much of the content is already available in creative mode's editor, and is gradually being reintroduced to the standard game mode update by update. As the project’s sole programmer, this takes more time, but the foundations are already there.

Currently, the game includes:
  • Fully destructible pixel-based terrain and construction system
  • Support for multiple maps/regions in Conquest mode, including a world map and cross-region travel
  • Fully functional multiplayer
  • Core industry and a complex crafting system
  • A work-in-progress augmentation system (rebuilding from the original crafting design)
  • Magitronics and a rich lore foundation
  • A wide range of development tools, with admin tools also available to other players and modders
  • Native Linux support for dedicated servers (publicly available shortly after Early Access launch), along with a native Linux client planned for the future

...and even more things I haven't thought of yet!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will increase once the game leaves Early Access. However, there will still be discounts during major updates, special events, and sales.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is already actively involved. Upcoming gameplay features and development progress are frequently shared on the official Discord server, and feedback from testing is used to guide adjustments. Modding tools are also being designed with productivity and ease of use in mind, with features such as code and asset hot-reloading, bulk asset editors and auto-completion + validation utilities.

Gamemodes, maps, including the content and code are publicly available on GitHub, serving as reference material for modders.”
