The Story of Evasion: A Deep Dive

The conflict with the Optera has a rich history, so we're doing a deep dive into Evasion's locations, characters, and story.

Humanity Takes to the Stars

Evasion is set in the early 23rd Century. Humans have colonized the spaceways thanks to FTL drives that run on a fuel called chloragen, which has become the galaxy’s most precious commodity.

The richest source of chloragen is found in space claimed by the Optera, a highly advanced and fiercely xenophobic race. When humans attempted to mine one of their worlds, a terrible war erupted. Millions of lives were lost on both sides before a fragile truce was declared. As a concession, humans were permitted to colonize one of the Optera’s moons. That moon, which the humans christened ‘Faro Colony’, became the galaxy’s largest exporter of chloragen.

Peace is Shattered

Now, decades later, the Optera have suddenly and unexpectedly launched an attack on Faro Colony. Your mission is to find out what happened on Faro Colony, and unearth what motivated the Optera to reopen a conflict that nearly brought both species to the brink of extinction. The lives of the over twelve thousand colonists, not to mention the rest of humanity, hang in the balance. Along the way, you’ll liberate outposts, travel deep into a chloragen mine, explore a town built into a crater, and face off against legions of Optera.

Enter the Vanguard

You play as a member of the Vanguard, an elite special ops team that specialize in breach reconnaissance. Like Navy SEALs of yore, the Vanguard are sent into galactic ‘hot spots’ to reconnoiter and deter threats. The Vanguard have four different classes -- Striker, Surgeon, Warden and Engineer -- each of which have a unique arsenal of weapons and abilities. You will learn more about each of these ‘hero classes’ and their capabilities in future blog posts.

A Lethal Enemy

No human has ever set foot on the Optera homeworld, so little is known about the Optera’s true origins. Did they evolve from insects, as their physiology would suggest? Are their exoskeletal structures some kind of cybernetic armor or a robotic vehicle? Their technology is highly advanced: they wield deadly energy weapons, can instantly teleport troops, and are able to launch highly coordinated attacks that don’t seem to rely on verbal communication. But what they want, and why they are so zealous about guarding their territory, remains a mystery to be solved.

You will encounter dozens of different kind of Optera as you travel through Faro Colony. From the ubiquitous Paragord to the elusive Skimmer to the fearsome Megatoma, they each pose a unique challenge that will force you to use every weapon and ability in your arsenal to survive.

Into the Storm

The campaign kicks off with a desperate distress call by Carl Dyson, a mine supervisor. Faro Colony is under attack, he proclaims, before his transmission is jammed. By the time you have boots on the ground, the moon is swarming with Optera, and you have to fight your way to the comm tower in order to discover what happened to Dyson and the other twelve thousand colonists.

Your actions are coordinated by A.D.E.L.E., an Autonomous Deep Learning Entity that helps you overcome obstacles throughout the game and provide vital insights as you fight your way deeper into enemy territory. By gaining power ups, you will unlock new weapon capabilities and learn how to wield the powerful equipment at your disposal. And as you progress further in the story, you will solve the mystery of why the Optera attacked, and what it means for the rest of the galaxy.

Evasion Enemies Sneak Peek: Who are the Optera?

We had a blast at GDC this year, and it was so awesome to connect with so many VR enthusiasts and gamers over our latest demo build. Last month we revealed our final two classes, and the crowds of GDC showed us the power of teamwork and class-based synergy!

But this begs the question: who are the Optera?

In this update, we'll explore the Optera background, as well as a sneak peek at just a few of the enemy types you'll encounter!

History

The enemies in Evasion are called the Optera and very little is known about their origins. Scientists theorize that they evolved from insects, but it’s unclear whether they wear exo-suits or if the Optera themselves are cybernetic organisms. They use energy weapons, have the ability to instantaneously teleport from location to location, and can propel themselves using anti-gravity technology. Since their attacks are highly coordinated, it’s assumed that are governed by a hive mind or use some non-verbal method of communication.

The main campaign in Evasion takes place on a moon that orbits the Optera homeworld that is rich in a mineral called chloragen, which the humans use to power their ships and colonies. When humans first established a mining operation on that moon, there were some initial skirmishes with the Optera, but a peace accord was struck.

Gnats

If you’ve ever walked into a hovering cloud of tiny black insects (and probably started sputtering and frantically waving your hands in front of your face), then you’ll recognize these creatures. Gnats are the most ubiquitous enemy in Evasion. They typically travel in small groups, and while they don’t do a ton of damage, they are great at slowly whittling down your health as you focus your energy on the larger enemies. Their movement patterns are erratic and can be hard to predict. But grabbing onto them with your tether and chucking them against a building is extremely satisfying – and they die with a very pleasing scream (courtesy of our talented Sound Designer, Gonzalo Lopez)!

Paragords

These are the Optera’s foot soldiers. Since there are no other bipedal Optera, it is believed that the Optera create Paragords by using parasites called nematodes to enslave humanoid races and use them in their legions. Paragords lumber into battle and use cover in a human-like way. They will often hide behind cover and lob mortar fire on the player. They fire their weapons in short bursts, machine gun-style, often while moving and changing tactical position. Paragords are dangerous because they’re so different than the rest of the Optera troops.

Bombers

Bombers are modeled after pill bugs, or woodlice, a type of insect often found in old wooden houses. We thought it was cool how they ball up when threatened, so in our game Bombers roll into battle, plant themselves on the ground and then unfold into a mobile turret that spews blaster fire at the player. As an added bonus, if the players get to close, the Bomber will explode! (Which causes major area-of-effect damage). The best way to defeat a Bomber is to destroy it before it gets too close. As our testers have discovered, you ignore a Bomber at your peril!

Hope you’re excited to tackle the Optera swarm in game, and we’ll be back with more news soon! Be sure to add Evasion to your Wishlist, and follow us on Twitter, Reddit and Facebook for the latest news on Evasion.

“It’s hard to really communicate why Evasion feels so much more intense than other similar games, but it’s noticeable very quickly. […] Dodging and shooting while physically moving around is super exciting to experience.”
