What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This game still has quite a ways to go before it becomes what I would consider to be a "finished product". That being said, I want to get it into the hands of players as soon as possible. As what I believe is the first combat flight game built for modern virtual reality from the ground up, being able to experience it first hand and give feedback during the development process will greatly help it to become the best game it can be. On top of that, this is an ambitious project for a one-man developer, so the financial support from Early Access will help carry it towards success.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I expect the game to be in Early Access for about one year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“My current plan for the full version includes one or more extra flyable vehicles with fully interactable cockpits, a campaign with several missions for each vehicle, more playable maps, and an in-game custom mission editor. I will also be continuously adding new weapons, equipment, and onboard systems. Depending on the success of the game during and after Early Access, some "stretch goals" include multiplayer and modding support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“There is one flyable vehicle (the AV-42C attack/transport VTOL) with a fully interactable cockpit, several simulated systems including electrical, fuel, weapons, countermeasure, and targeting systems, a single player campaign with several story-driven missions, and several quick flight scenarios.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Other than promotional sales, the price of the game will likely NOT change after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“As someone who was highly involved in the communities of other games in Early Access, I deeply understand the value of community feedback during the development process of a game. I plan to take all community feedback, whether it's forum posts, comments, reviews, etc, into consideration so that this game can grow into one we can all be proud of.”

Dev Report Nov 30, 2018

First, I'd like to apologise for the lack of announcements here on the Steam page and participation in the Steam discussions forum. You can rest assured that VTOL VR development is still very active! It has been a few months since the last major update (v0.0.10), but since then, I’ve been hard at work adding new features and releasing them in small updates to the public testing branch.

Most of the work has been towards updating radar mechanics, adding wingmen voices and voice recognition, and making progress on the map editor. Along side the major changes are the usual general improvements to vehicle cockpits, additional weapons, and optimizations.

The new radar system takes into account the radar cross section (RCS) of each aircraft at all view angles, physical effects such as Doppler and ground clutter, and simulates the effects of chaff more realistically. These changes allow you to employ more advanced radar missile/detection and avoidance techniques and make for a more dynamic and engaging combat environment. This feature can be enabled in the game settings menu of the public_testing branch.

With the help of many generous volunteers, each wingman can now have one of over 20 unique voices when calling out enemy contacts, missile shots, etc. Voices can be assigned to a specific wingman in the mission editor, or left to be randomly shuffled. On compatible systems (Windows 10), you can also enable voice recognition by switching on the mic on the cockpit’s comms panel. You’ll be able to command wingmen to attack targets, set formations, refuel, etc, with more commands to come. With the new voices and the addition of voice recognition, the battlefield feels much more alive.

I bet you’re all getting tired of the standard island map. The map editor will be a crucial tool for creating unique locations to fly different missions and campaigns. You will be able to import heightmaps, modify the terrain using simple tools, easily generate cities, place military bases and other static objects, and place roads, bridges, and highways. You can create maps from as small as 24km by 24km to as large as 196km by 196km, in different biomes such as boreal, arctic, or desert. Like the mission editor, you’ll be able to zip up the generated map files and share them with other players.

If you want to try and give feedback on the latest features, you can opt-in to the public testing branch by going into the Betas tab in the game’s properties windows on Steam.

About This Game

VTOL VR is a near-futuristic combat flight game built specifically for Virtual Reality. You are the pilot of an AV-42C, a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capable vehicle that can perform transport, air to surface, and air to air combat roles. Take on a wide array of challenges that will put your flight skills, situational awareness, and combat tactics to the test.

NEW: Now you can also pilot the F/A-26B, an advanced twin-engine multi-role fighter jet.

No extra hardware is required. If you have a VR set with tracked controllers, then you have a virtual cockpit where you can reach out and interact with the stick and throttle, flip switches, press buttons, and even pull the eject handle if things go wrong.

Immerse yourself in action packed combat missions, delicate vertical landings, aircraft carrier operations, aerial refueling and more.

NEW: Create and fly custom missions which you can share with other pilots using the built-in mission editor (work in progress).
