What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want RetroWar to be, like, totally woke when it's released. But we don't know everything that you our players love and hate. So Early Access lets us get your feedback, take out the bad stuff and add more of the good stuff.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Until it's ready! Don't nag me, daddy-O! But if I had to guess (and I do)... three months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Workshop support - download games made by other people
Online multiplayer
Steam Input (Steam Controller) support
Linux and Mac support
More games”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“See 'About This Game' for current state.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We'd like to reward early backers with a discount at the start of Early Access. After EA the price may rise a little, but you can always add it to your wishlist and wait for a sale when it will be discounted.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“You guys post feedback on what you like and don't like in the Steam forum. There will be polls to decide which features to prioritize. Any levels or mods developed by the community may be added to the game (with your permission).”

About This Game

RetroWar is a collection of 8-bit retro style arcade games. For the Early Access release we are focused on single-screen multiplayer games that you play with your friends locally (i.e. sitting on the couch together.) There is no single player mode (yet).

Trailer music by NOVACUB.

Games

  • Ships - battle in the tradition of SpaceWar / Asteroids / Thrust / Subspace
  • Droids - fast-paced twin stick shooter
  • Tanks - tactical sniping game
  • BombBots - drop bombs to blow up your opponents, but don't get caught in the blast
  • GhostJumpers - platform race to be first while jumping over spooky enemies

Most of these games are made with our UniBlaster engine. It's designed with the specs of a 'fantasy' 1980s console, akin to an NES, but with modern standards for framerate, aspect ratio and controller input. It's easily extensible, so you can mod games, mash up different games, or even create your own.

Features

  • Old school low resolution gaming - no mixing of different sized pixels here.
  • Authentic sound track of soundtracker mods and 8-bit chiptunes.
  • Highly modable - change the music, graphics, rules, or write your own games.
  • Play with controller or mouse/keyboard
  • Designed for 4 players, but supports up to 16.

Early Access plans

We want feedback from you as to what you would like to play. None of these features are guaranteed, but we plan to work on the features you support.

  • Workshop support - share games made by other people
  • Online multiplayer
  • Steam Input (Steam Controller) support
  • Linux and Mac support

Known bugs

If you plug in a new controller or change the screen mode you must quit the game and re-start it for the change to be recognised. This is caused by a bug in a library we rely on, LibGDX. We plan to replace LibGDX with Steam Input in the future.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 10
    • Processor: Intel Core i5-4300U @ 1.90Ghz
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Intel HD 4400
    • Storage: 400 MB available space
    • Additional Notes: Will probably run even on much lower spec, but this is the minimum we test.
