Spring-y Fog! Levitating Visitors! Brand New Inventory!

Oh look, it's another development update! Have a watch of the video below and see all the new, exciting developments as the game keeps growing:

In short:
  • Fog is better than it used to be. Invisible springs are the secret sauce.
  • Levitating zoo visitors! This is an exansion on the magic hands ability that lets the zookeeper lift heavy boxes and throw them around - one of the few upsides of being cursed!
  • This led to a rework of the inventory system, including the new blueprint item for designing and building the zoo.
  • Game settings! Not very exciting, but every game needs them.
I'm still hard at work making this game, so follow along for more news!

The 'Bigger Zoos' Update!

Hello! I'm Matt, I'm the lead developer and... well, I guess the only developer on The Eldritch Zookeeper. It's time to share an update on how things with the game have been progressing over the last while!

If you're new to The Eldritch Zookeeper, here's what you need to know:
  • It's a game about managing a zoo, but the zoo is full of monsters.
  • The game's not quite ready for release yet, but I'm working hard on it!
  • It's going to be really fun.
So what's been going on the last six months of development? I've made a development update video that you can watch right now! It's here:

For those who don't like videos, here's the gist: I've been down in the slimy guts of the game's internals. It's greasy down there, but sometimes you've got to get your hands dirty.

There is now a proper Saving and Loading System in the game and this is a Big Deal™ - in-progress zoos can be returned to at a later point! You know, like, in video games.

Because I can easily load previously created zoos, I've been able to work on making sure that the game can be played well with lots of visitors and lots of monsters in it. I'm still working on the performance side of things, but it's coming along!

There's new zoo walls, or rather, fences around the perimeter! They're in the same cast-iron style as the zoo gate, and I think zoos look a lot prettier as a result.

A brand-new camera system! Smooth zooming, rotating, all the good stuff. Good game cameras aren't always the easiest thing to

Feeding troughs! I like adding new things to the game that the player can actually build, and feeding troughs are a useful addition to monster enclosures. They keep the meat or the cosmic ooze (you know, whatever a monster might be hungry for) organised, because monsters might kick the food out of their pen. These monsters aren't the most intelligent things, but I wouldn't say that near them. I don't know what language they speak, and I don't know if they can read minds or not. What I do know is, they have a lot of teeth.

I'm excited to have returned from the aforementioned greasy-guts of the game, and back to creating new content. Exciting! If you haven't already, be sure to wishlist the game right here on Steam, and subscribe to the youtube channel (with Bell Button selected and all) to keep up-to-date with exciting development news!

About This Game

In The Eldritch Zookeeper you run a zoo packed with unsettling, otherworldly monsters.

Deceived by a particularly well-dressed skeleton, a cursed zookeeper is forced to manage a zoo full of eldritch abominations, ideally with as little bloodshed as possible. Can our unfortunate zookeeper break his curse? Running a zoo filled with terrifying creature that must be cared for isn't easy - construct enclosures and keep the monsters fed and reasonably content, and build amenities for the zoo visitors! A Happy Monster Zoo™ is when a creature's teeth/claws/exploding-tendencies are far, far away from the guest's vital organs. They need those! Monster rampages are discouraged.

Taking a mixture of inspiration from classic Bullfrog games (Theme Park World, Dungeon Keeper) and modern survival games, The Eldritch Zookeeper is coming to a variety of platforms very soon!

  • A variety of bloodthirsty monsters to contain, feed and keep reasonably happy. Or else!
  • Build ice-cream stands, smoothie shops, bathrooms and other amenities to distract zoo visitors from the yawning void!
  • Grow your zoo into a thriving must-see, cannot-unsee attraction for all the family!
