What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“While we develop the next entry in the Stronghold series, a few folk at Firefly Studios have been taking a peek underground at a different kind of strategy game! MetaMorph: Dungeon Creatures retains some of our DNA in its fast-paced hero switching and tactical combat, however the action genre is still new to us. Our aim is to make a fun, thinking man’s dungeon crawler with the help of the community who have been playing our games for 15 years, but also new players who enjoy trying out games that are still in development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“While we have an update plan for MetaMorph this will likely change depending on community feedback and the development of each free update. We will leave Early Access once we're happy with the variety of characters, levels and enemies, with additional content a possibility after full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of MetaMorph is planned to feature an expanded roster of heroes to choose from, levels to liberate and hideous creatures to slay! As the number of characters grows new levels will offer additional layers of challenge, with new enemy types and traps pushing your hero switching, cooldown management and combat skills to the limit.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is largely stable with some minor bugs and areas where we intend to add polish. There are currently four heroes to select, upgrade and morph between across 50 levels. The Rabbit (Normal Type), Ogre (Ice), Nymph (Fire) and Rat Man (Poison) give players different elements to experiment with and crush their enemies, along with a host of powers to acquire and level up. This version of MetaMorph is intended to offer a taste of the core gameplay with extra content planned in the form more levels, an expanded team of playable heroes, unique abilities and enemy types.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pricing for the final version of MetaMorph will be announced close to full release and will be higher than the game’s pricing during Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ll be paying close attention to feedback from players, using this to inform combat and level design. Updates on the current state of development and new features will be communicated with vlogs, trailers, Steam community posts and in the forums. We’d also urge players to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for direct communication and quick answers about the game! Our aim is to keep players informed in return for their valued feedback on new content and features.”

v1.7.0.1399 - Controller UPDATE & Feedback from PAX/REZZED

We recently took MetaMorph to PAX East in Boston and Rezzed in London where we got a chance to demo controller support for the first time. The feedback was very positive so we are super excited be in a position to add it to the main game. This is a first pass so there are a few rough edges which we will be working on in the coming weeks. As always we want your feedback.

Thanks to everyone that came to the shows and played MetaMorph. After observing folks playing the demo and talking to them afterwards we have implemented a number of fixes based on that feedback. Thanks also to Grimm for his valuable feedback. We will be adding more of your suggestions soon!

v1.7.0.1399 - 33.8MB - Controller Support 2nd Pass

Controller Tweaks and Other Fixes
  • Improved skill targeting using controllers
  • Fixed the level map scrolling to latest unlocked level when completing previous levels using controller
  • Improved spawn hole animations
  • Fixed spawning as the incorrect hero from checkpoints
  • Scene loading optimizations
  • Fixed an exploit to 'spring' heroes forward by canceling targeted skills
  • Improved Poison Bomb explosions
  • Improved Rabbit's 'Ghost' animations
  • Fixed a bug where the rabbit would move while crouched after landing
  • Menu button optimizations
  • Improved ultimate ability effects for all Heroes

v1.6.0.1375 - 69.1MB - Controller Support 1st Pass & Feedback from PAX/REZZED

Controller Support

This is our first pass at controller support and as such is not feature complete. Here are some notes on controller support for the moment:

- Working/optimized for Xbox 360/XB1 gamepads, Steam Controller and 3rd party controllers with similar layouts
- Not currently compatible with DualShock4 (even with DS4Windows). We'll get to it eventually.
- All heroes attack automatically, targeting the closest enemy in range.
- Targeted skills (Rabbit's 'Jump', Nymph's 'Fire Strike' etc) are a bit fiddly at the moment but we're working on them.
- Settings menus, loadout screen and level map screen still have teething issues and as such are not perfect but do have basic functionality
- In game controls can be viewed in the Settings menu under Controller
- Only one control scheme for now. Others to come in future updates.
- In map screen, use LT/RT to switch between Map screen and Loadout screen. Press Start to open Main Menu.
- Loadout screen shows contextual button prompts for assigning skills and heroes, as well as buying skill points and upgrading.

Tweaks and Fixes

- Added a delay to enemies' reactivating after Ratman cloak skill
- Pots now have a 25% chance of spawning a small gold pile when destroyed
- Fire jets now emit a small fire spurt before igniting
- Ogre's ultimate skill can now be directed. About time!
- Improved poison blobs
- New machine gun turret graphics and animation
- New flamethrower animation
- New lava texture
- Increased distance of Butcher's charge
- Picture of hero and skills added to messages
- New enemy spawning effect
- Added a particle to hero and UI when ultimate skill is available
- The Butcher is now attackable while spinning
- The Butcher should now rotate more reasonably while spinning
- The Butcher stands up on the spot when recovering after charging into a wall, so his attack point doesn't have to move again
- New Fire Golem model and Lava Crack attack
- Fire Golem rebalanced to make him WELL 'ARD
- Fixed a bug where the Golem would rotate to face the player while resting
- Fixed a bug with the cloak skill not triggering its cooldown
- Various sfx tweaks
- Various small gameplay tweaks and bug fixes

Please note: This update should download automatically when you launch the Steam client. You can check the version number on the dungeon map screen. If it's not correct please exit and re-login to Steam.

About This Game

From the creators of the critically acclaimed Stronghold!

MetaMorph: Dungeon Creatures is a tactical dungeon crawler which draws heavy inspiration from ARPG such as Gauntlet, Magicka and Diablo.

  • EXPLORE a web of trap filled, monster infested lairs as you work your way deeper underground.
  • MASTER tactical combat, elemental powers and character switching to escape a brutal fate.
  • TRICK your enemies by turning the dungeon’s saw blades, bombs and boulders against them!
  • MORPH between powerful spirit forms, shapeshifting to counter and crush enemy hordes.
  • CONQUER the dungeon by finding and defeating each Lord of Death once and for all.

Plan your attack and lure enemies into the path of heavy boulders, flying saw blades, bombs and whatever else the dungeon throws at you! Select your hero loadout, upgrade their elemental abilities and morph between them at will as you explore each death-infested lair. Charge into enemies as the lightning fast Rabbit, crush them with the monstrous Ogre and burn whatever remains with the Nymph’s Inferno!

Customise your team of heroes for each level and transform between them to survive! Freeze poisonous creatures in their tracks, melt ice elementals into the dungeon floor or simply cleave them in two with a well-timed Sword Flurry. Experiment with new morphs as you conquer a series of increasingly challenging lairs, collecting and upgrading the powers of fallen heroes as you descend ever deeper into the dungeon that claimed them.
