What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Crafting an experience from madness and darkness takes its toll on the crafter.

If the dose truly makes the poison then I am thoroughly poisoned.

Although a large majority of the experience is already in place and one can experience the madness from beginning to end there are a few features I wish to implement before I can call this project "complete."

This is my first commercial game and Early Access served the purpose of allowing me to learn as I craft and craft as I learn. It has been a test of my sanity developing this project. So many roadblocks came in so many forms. From having to learn from scratch with no experience coding to data corruption over a year into development and having to start completely over. It was almost as though this project was trying to uncreate itself as I was creating it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This is a difficult question to answer. As stated before: madness takes its toll. And madness it certainly has been in the creation of this project. This game was alpha-worthy months ago but I kept adding and adding things to it and it never felt quite finished enough.

Update 2022-11-03:
This game is as good as complete but there are still a handful of things I wish to add before I finally call it finished. Until then the "Early Access" status is but a formality.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“This is also a difficult question to answer. As stated before a majority of the game is in place.

I plan to change a few things and add some others. This is a list of potential changes and additions that are in the works. Depending on many factors these changes may or may not be implemented - my sanity being one of them. If the madness does not take me then you can expect to see most if not all these implemented:
-Better particle effects
-More scares
-Difficulties -- for those of you who can't take the madness or those of you who wish an even greater challenge of your sanity

Update 2022-11-03:
Features added. It is doubtful that the final game will function or look any different. All that may be done now is adding lost content that I did not get a chance to reimplement and adding a few things I did not have time to add.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“This project is nearing its completion. Nearly all the pieces are in place: puzzles, creatures, levels etc. There are some very minor issues that still need to be fixed but nothing game breaking.

If your wits are sharp and you can brave the darkness it is very possible to play from beginning to end - as my poor, unsuspecting play-testers discovered.

Update 2022-11-03:
As stated before, this project is as good as done but there are a handful of things I may want to add - leaving "Early Access" a formality and technicality.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Depending on the amount of extra content that is added to the game it may go up in price.

One thing is for certain though, those who purchase the game while in Early Access are guaranteed to pay less.

With how much I have kept adding and adding to this game it is very possible that the price may indeed increase if major updates are released.

I believe in transparency so if such big releases do end up coming to fruition updates will be communicated on the store page long before such release and subsequent price increase.

Update 2022-11-03:
I plan on increasing the price to $9.99 from $7.99. Years and years on and off of tireless work. This game has cost me far more than it has made but I did not want to change the price drastically.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will be watching the Steam forum for any bug reports and interesting ideas or suggested tweaks. Constructive feedback is welcome. I simply hope to create a memorable experience that will drive you mad! ...in a good way.

One thing to keep in mind though. This is a dark game... in both gameplay and story. I have added a way to adjust the brightness in-game as per many a request during Greenlight. For those of you who are too cowardly to face the darkness you may now adjust the brightness to higher levels - or lower levels if you live dangerously. No other boons will be granted in this regard.

Good luck, and may you keep the madness at bay as I have so far done.”

About This Game

Trapped in a dungeon where the very darkness seems to writhe. The halls echo with hellish tones. How long has it been since you have been imprisoned? You can scarcely remember why. Starvation and deprivation has begun to rob you of your senses. You just remember red. Everything about this place is red.

Discover why you were imprisoned and find a way out. Be wary, you are not alone in this dark place. You are being watched. You are being hunted. The shadows haunt your every footstep. The evil that lurks here will not allow you to leave. Can you find the answers that are locked away in this labyrinth? Can you find the way out before you lose yourself forever? Or are you doomed to play out the endless cycle of horror over and over and over…? Can you escape this living nightmare?

Game Features:

  • First Person Survival Horror – Experience the horror from the protagonist’s perspective. You have no means of defending yourself other than hiding, running, and your cunning.

  • Dungeon Randomization – No playthrough is the same. Every level, room, hall, item, scare, creature, puzzle, piece of lore is randomized. You have one chance while you are conscious to get out of the dungeon, should you fall unconscious you wake up in a cell and must attempt your escape again with everything re-randomized.

  • Dark and Brooding Original Story – Ouroboros: Prelude is a dark story of madness that takes inspiration from Alchemic, Germanic, and Renaissance era history.

  • Reactive Environment – The environment is not a static element in Ouroboros: Prelude. Nearly every object can be interacted with. Use objects to barricade doors, hide or as distractions. The environment also has a mind of its own and may change on a whim and may even try to maim you. How hard can a randomized dungeon be? When it randomly continues to change... randomly.

  • Intelligent Entities – Creatures stalk these fell halls. Their only purpose is to keep the secrets of this place hidden from you and to keep you from freedom. However, like most intelligent creatures they can be avoided or tricked if your wits are sharp.

  • Advanced Sensory System – The darkness may be oppressive but it can just as easily be your ally. Staying in the light may help you see but creatures can also see you, and it will also render you momentarily blind when you transition from light to darkness as your vision adjusts. Hiding in the darkness may increase your chances of survival… for a time. Be careful though, even if they cannot see you they may still be able to hear you - running is not always wise. If you are careful enough you can hear them before you see them and perhaps sneak around them. Even still, some other denizens of this maze are not daunted by the dark.

  • Conserve Your Light – You are trapped in a dungeon. Whoever wants you here is intending to keep you here. If you are to escape you must light the way. But be careful you do not run out of tinder or candles or you will be trapped in the dark.

  • Madness - Be careful that you do not lose yourself within the depths of this abysmal place. The more exposed you are to madness the more madness takes its hold on you.
