What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Hellion is an ambitious game that has been in development for almost two years now. Having completed the core gameplay features, we believe it is time to share the game with players before proceeding further with the development. One of the main reasons behind this decision is feedback. We expect that involving community this early in the development can only benefit the project. It is our opinion that Early Access provides an amazing opportunity for the community to contribute to the game that they like and want to play. Gameplay improvements, new mechanics and evolution of core features are only possible through open and honest discussion between players and the developers.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Early Access will last for at least a year. At this time it is hard to estimate how long exactly. It will depend a lot on feedback as the scope of the development may change based on that. One thing is certain, early adopters will have a unique opportunity to watch as an entire solar system evolves before their eyes.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Full version of the game will have all the features found in our roadmap that can be seen here.
Three corporations to choose from, large fleet of functionally different ships, more planets and other celestial objects, detailed crafting system and a huge number of items – these are all planned for the full release. These will be implemented through regular updates over the course of EA. Also, we will constantly work on optimization and bug fixes in order to offer our players an exceptional gaming experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Hellion is in a state that clearly represents the idea behind it- an immersive gameplay with realistic physics and complex ship and station systems that require regular maintenance in order for players to stay alive. We believe one multipurpose industrial ship and the station building feature are enough for players to kick off their space adventure, while hundred players per server will guarantee a fun and interesting multiplayer experience. A lot of content has yet to be added, followed by polishing and more optimization. Also, we plan localization of the game to various languages in the near future.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“As the amount of content increases the price will probably change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Our goal is to work together with the members of Hellion’s community. We will keep our players informed of our plans and progress through our communication channels: Steam forum, our website, Facebook page, Twitter and Reddit. We will be listening to the voice of the community and are looking forward to constructive discussions aimed at creating the gameplay experience that we will all enjoy.

Devblog #42 - Importance of Being Rude and Awakened

With Rude Awakening, our goal is to take you on a perilous journey through the Hellion system and immerse you into the events that caused the disaster of the Expedition project, leaving only death and destruction. The look and feel of the world provide an emotional background for everything players are about to experience and we want to evolve the gameplay around this setting. With this update we will set the stage and continue from there with mechanics, system functionality and the game economy. Hellion is growing according to plan...

Lone Survivors

You have dreamed of electric sheep for a long time. And now, you wake up. But what happens to a person when reality is so different from their expectations? How does one cope with the painful rift between the dreams of tomorrow and the reality of solitary survival? Will the mind triumph or will it break, once you find yourself in the vast darkness of space with nothing but the sound of silence surrounding you.

But what if you are not alone? What if someone is trying to help you, guide you… Who are they? Should you trust them? What if there are others out there, as lost and curious as you might be? And eager to solve the puzzle of Hellion. Having someone along for the ride is never a bad thing...

It’s all up to you to decide.

The game itself

No matter what you choose to do, Hellion remains a hard core game and we plan to keep it that way. While the tutorial will hold your hand for awhile until you’ve figured out the basics, it will not do so forever and the world will ruthlessly punish each and every wrong step. But every failure, every bout of anger and frustration is ultimately redeemed once the sense of pride and achievement take over once you succeed in doing something for the first time.

And if we’ve learned something over the past two years it’s that all of you out there who survive the pain of learning will become a part of an exceptional community that grows around this game. Development team can’t find enough words of praise for the importance of community feedback, their suggestions and ideas, constructive discussions we are having with them each day.

If you haven’t already, join the Hellion community on Discord: https://discord.gg/hellion

And don’t be afraid if your awakening was a bit rude… Being awake is to be alive,

Devblog #41 - Planets and Moons

Planets, planets… they are great, right? Well, with the Rude Awakening update they will look even better! And before you ask… No, we are not introducing planetary landings in Hellion. Hellion is about space, that unique feeling that you get when you turn off the lights, take a deep breath and jump into the Black… And we want to keep it that way.

Now back to the planets... As you all know all planets in Hellion, excluding Bethyr and its moons, were simple placeholders. Now, with the new update, we have decided that it was about time to give all those celestial bodies a fresh new and somewhat exotic look. Whether you are an explorer or a scavenger, think about taking that vacuum proof camera with you making a few nice screenshots while visiting distant locations . Here’s a short overview covering some of the “other gas giants” and their moons.

In case you couldn’t tell from the image, this is Athnar, along with its two moons the dark one known as Ulgorath and bright red Tasciana. Athnar is what you would call a “scorched” giant, a planet that is now too close to the blazing inferno of its parent star. Long time ago Athnar lost much of its upper atmosphere during Hellion’s helium flash, a runaway fusion reaction that drastically increased Hellion’s temperature. This calamity lasted for only a few brief minutes but it was enough to completely destroy Nimath’s atmosphere all the way to its carbon core. So, in a way, you could say that Athnar and its moons got away easy.

Today this gas giant continues to bathe in the searing heat of Hellion and its ever burning atmosphere gives it a bright orange look.

But not all planets suffered as Nimath and Athnar. For some Hellion’s transition into a red giant proved to be quite beneficial. And that was the case of Hirath and its three moons, Iblith, Calipso and Enigma. The added heat and radiation coming from a once distant star melted this frozen giant’s cloud cover turning it into a hotbed of activity with powerful hurricanes and massive thunderstorms dancing in its night sky. But what of its moons?

Without any atmosphere to speak of, both Iblith and Calipso experienced little to no change and essentially remained just as they were in eons past.

But Enigma on the other hand, changed profoundly. Once frozen solid it began thawing during Hellion’s transformation. Nowdays it is located well inside Hellion’s “habitable zone” and shielded from excess radiation by its parent’s powerful magnetic field. With its vast oceans and moderate cloud coverage it remains the number one terraforming candidate in Hellion, with water covered Teiora coming in at close second and Eridil in the third spot with its toxic high pressure atmosphere.

That would be all for today. So long, and thanks for all the fis… erhm… planets.

About This Game

Hellion is a first person multiplayer space survival game.

It is a fusion of survival and space simulation genres that pits players against the deadly environment and one another. Survive in the harsh conditions of space and scavenge for air, fuel and other items necessary for survival. But keep in mind, you are not the only one out there. There are others, but will they help, or will they throw you to the void without a second thought? Remember, no matter how brutal space may seem, it cannot hold a candle to man.

Hellion is a solar system several thousand lightyears from Earth. Despite its distance, it is the target of the first interstellar colonization mission during the 23rd century. Almost a million colonists, suspended in cryogenic hibernation, leave Sol on a journey that would take many decades.

However, when they wake up, almost a century later, they find themselves trapped inside a nightmare. Instead of living in a manmade paradise, they are forced to fight for survival surrounded by deserted stations, incomplete orbital habitats and derelict warships.

With the closest rescue operation decades away, orbital economy in disarray and no authorities in sight, many turn to scavenging, stealing and outright violence. Few others try to live more civilized and begin uncovering the truth behind the largest disaster in human history.

Hellion is an ambitious project. It is an immersive world set in a solar system many lightyears from the comforts of Earth and is entirely based on the laws of Newtonian physics.

Hellion will make its debut as an Early Access game. EA version represents the basics of the vision behind this dark world. As our community grows and the player base expands, the game will evolve beyond these confines and become a true space survival that we can all enjoy. Open and honest communication between developers and community is the cornerstone of this idea. We are always open for discussion with our players as we believe that each and every one of us can add something to this project. Join us in the dystopian future that is Hellion and let’s build this world together!

Below is a comprehensive list of features planned for Hellion’s early access. Most of these are already in the game, some of them will undergo modification and improvement while others will be implemented during the course of Early Access (features marked as completed are the ones that will be present from the start and possibly modified and improved upon, based on community feedback)…
