What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Brush Up VR is based on Brush Up: the Toothbrush Training Game, an award-winning mixed reality mobile app. In its current state, it is a complete (and fun!) VR experience, but we would like to expand it to include more depth and replayability.

Early access lets us understand player desires. Although VR technology is not new, game development in VR is still in its infancy. Brush Up VR, in particular, offers an innovative style of gameplay which we are still exploring. We want to explore it with our player-base as we further develop the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This will depend on the community and the features they want. We expect to release a robust game in Q2 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“This early access version is a lot of fun for players, but it is simple. We would like to add depth and replayability, as we learn what features our community most wants to see.

In the current game, the player's only goal is to simply clean all of Budd's tooth surfaces before the timer runs out. Our plan is to start with this challenge and introduce levels that increase in difficulty as the player progresses.

For example, in addition to racing the clock, in more advanced levels, the player may also begin to learn sophisticated brushing techniques. These techniques (such as the Bass-Stillman stroke) are difficult to execute, but dental science has shown them to be beneficial to oral health. In addition to earning a high score by deft brushing, the player acquires a valuable lifelong skill. (Our mobile app successfully teaches these techniques to children as young as 5.)
In addition to beating the clock, in more advanced levels, we would like the player to also begin to learn brushing techniques. The more closely the player matches the technique, measured by the controllers, the higher he will score, and progress to additional techniques, and unlocking cosmetic rewards.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is fully playable with no known bugs. It is a short but fun experience that offers a vigorous physical challenge.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“This depends on the features that are added. If we deliver a full-skill trainer, the price may triple or more.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“This game is primarily for kids. Young kids are unlikely to be directly involved in community discussions. Parents will provide feedback, based on their kids' game experiences and on their own concerns as parents.

We will approach the Steam Community with an attitude of Discovery. It is not our goal to make a game and then collect player feedback in response to it. Instead, we want to collect player desires, then make a game that responds to them!! The Early Access build provides a starting point for discussion.

We will be working with the community using the Steam Discussions page.”

About This Game

Brush Up VR is a simple Toothbrushing challenge game. It is derived from the Brush Up mixed reality mobile game. Developed with NIH support, Brush Up wins health gaming awards (like the 2015 Innovation in Games and Simulation award from America’s prestigious Institute of Medicine) for teaching young children toothbrush mastery. While the mixed reality game is a bathroom companion, the VR game is a fun exploration of dentition. Kids learn that brushing means a lot more than cleaning the front teeth plus a quick scrub down one side. Designed for young people of any age -- the brushing challenge is lively fun for anyone.
