About This Game

A posh suburban lawn… on Mars

You are Madame Odette, 74, hired by Verdance Interplanetary for her hedges. Your mission on the Red Planet is simple: grow grass there. To start with, you get a packet of seeds, a leaky cup stolen from the cafeteria and a pair of nail scissors. Sow the red dust, water it and watch it turn green, in first person and at 0.38 g. Then mow, press your clippings into turf bricks, sell them to the rich colonists in their domes… and do it all again, bigger.

Perfect stripes

The grass lies down the way you mow it: go one way, then the other, and your lawn fills with light and dark bands, like a stadium. And the "Blades on Mars" counter races on, all the way to the billions.
  • Six grass varieties: classic English lawn, clover, golf green, cactus turf, glow grass that shines at night, and screaming grass, which screams when you cut it.
  • Orders from rich colonists ("Château Regolith", "Baron von Krater"…), to deliver before the deadline.
  • The suburban dream: garden gnomes, pink flamingos, a white picket fence, a barbecue, an inflatable pool. They raise the price of your bricks, and fifteen golden gnomes are waiting to be found.

From nail scissors to a laser mower

Five tool families, five tiers each, from The Convict to The Green God. Every tier changes the way you play, and every one is a joke: the push spreader that sows under your feet, the 500-metre hose that follows you everywhere, the reel mower that takes off on rocks, the rocket shopping cart, the American lawn tractor with its twin chrome exhausts, the seed cannon, the laser mower and its drones, orbital seeding. Set up sprinklers, robot mowers and drones, and the lawn ends up almost growing itself.

Mars fights back

Dust storms turn your grass red: out with the leaf blower. Martian moles dig right through the green: the shovel. Nights drop to −80 °C and freeze overwatered grass: heat lamps, tarps and a sprinkler timer. Your oxygen sets the length of every outing, but you never die: a drone brings you back to the habitat… with the bill. And Reginald Verdance, the CEO, cheers you on from Earth with a 4-to-24-minute radio delay: his storm warning arrives after the storm.

A lawn you can see from Earth

Fictional brands order patterns mowed into the grass: a smiley, a rocket, a slice of Pizza Orbitale, the Krounch Cola logo. Mow short the squares the projector draws, then photograph the result from orbit. Then go further: Utopia Planitia, Valles Marineris, Olympus Mons, the North polar cap. Five regions, each with its own climate, all the way to the Green Planet project, and a globe of Mars that turns from red to green.

Mars Gardener is a single-player game, in English and French, played with keyboard and mouse: a campaign of about five hours, a third-person photo mode and three save slots.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Mars Gardener was made by one person with the help of AI tools: the code, the 3D models (built by the game's code), the sounds and music (synthesised by the game's code), and the texts in French and English, under the author's direction. The screenshots, animations and gameplay video on this page come from the game; the cinematic trailer is staged with the game's own models, made the same way. The game generates nothing with AI while you play.
