Runes that combine

Every hero wears a board of core runes, each with up to 10 sub runes socketed beneath it. Put a fireball rune under a lightning rune and every shocked creature calls down fire. Chain frost into shattering ice, poison into spreading plague, light into healing rain. 10 elements, 786 runes, one board to wire as you like.

Thousands at once

Hordes of thousands of creatures pour in at 60 fps: thorn hounds, bark apes hurling boulders, swooping briarwings, the risen dead. Halfway to every boss a mid-boss waits; at every chapter's end a giant breaks up out of the ground.

• Mage: a staff and spells, from lances of light to falling stars

The forests and ruined temple of Thornmere, the lava and smoking volcano of Emberreach, the frozen Glass Marsh, the red dunes and sunken temples of the Sunscar, the coral lagoon and dark lighthouse of Coralreach and the giant glowing mushrooms of the Gloamwood. Each has its own creatures, named bosses and giants; the weather turns as you fight, and every act of a chapter brings its own twist.
