“We expect Early Access to last around 6 to 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will continue the main story with a second act and the elven lands in the mountains, add new regions, quests and companions, an elven furniture set, more Nature spells including a shapeshifting form, Steam Cloud saves and achievements, plus balance and polish based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The first chapter of the story is complete and playable from start to finish. Farming, animals, cooking, fishing, crafting, housing and furniture are in, along with real-time combat and four schools of magic.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price when the game leaves Early Access, as the content grows. Anyone who buys during Early Access gets every update at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read every review, discussion and bug report on the Steam forums, and we will post regular update notes explaining what changed and why. Player feedback will directly decide which features and fixes come next.”

About This Game

Roots & Runes is an RPG that combines a cozy homesteading atmosphere with a touch of adventure. You don't really need to be a mage to own a farm, craft, sell and build, but it certainly doesn't hurt.  

In this game, you can choose to build, decorate, farm, craft, fish and sell, or you can explore the world in engaging adventures, learn magic and take it home with you. 

Discover Maple Hollow, the first world of the continent of Carpathia. Meet the villagers and discover magical creatures hidden in the mountains, heal the world and make it safe again. 

Farming and Building

  • Gardening: Plant vegetables, mushrooms, flowers, herbs and fruits

  • Animals: Tend to cows, chickens and sheep

  • Fishing: Discover the fishing spots in Maple Hollow

  • Building: Buy a house from the store and build it yourself

  • Decorate: Decorate your home

  • Crafting: cooking, baking, tailoring, blacksmithing, alchemy, herbalism

Magic:

  • Choose two of the four schools of magic: Water, Fire, Nature, Arcane 

  • Meet your mentors and train to discover new spells and get stronger

Adventure:

  • Fight with your sword or with your wand

  • Explore caves and forests and fight enemies

  • Travel by boat, by foot or by map once you discovered a location

  • Find companions and take them with you: a fairy, a dog, a dragon.

  • Hire a soldier to help you with fighting 

Story:

Maple Hollow seems to be a quiet place. And in most parts, it is. But under the surface, an ancient curse rules the lives of the villagers. Every night ,at dusk ,ghosts raid the outskirts of the villages guarded by guard-stones. The people of The Hollow adapted, never asked many questions and continued their lives under the guarding  light of the great runes the elves left them with before hiding in their mountain and leaving the human world.

But their balance of that world is now shaking, odd things happen in The Hollow.  You can try to adapt to them, do as all the hollowers did for generations, or follow them and try to track the curse back to it's master.

Early access: 

All the features mentioned in this description are part of the early access version, some to be expanded in the future. The game is made to support expansions and updates, with new adventures, worlds and store items to be added.
