What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Northgrave County is an online survival game, and survival games live or die on balance, pacing and what players actually do together. We have the core loop running on live servers: exploring the county, looting, crafting, building, farming, driving, fighting zombies and surviving the weather. What we need now is a real player base to tell us what works and what does not, so the systems get tuned around how people really play instead of how we think they will.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to be in Early Access for roughly 12 to 18 months. The exact length depends on how fast the remaining systems come together and on what the community asks for, and we would rather leave Early Access when the game is ready than on a fixed date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan for the full version to include more of everything that is already in the game: more items, recipes, building pieces, vehicles, clothing and points of interest across the county; more zombie types and behaviours; more world events; deeper farming, cooking and medical systems; and more progression through skills and milestones. We also plan to release the dedicated server files so players can host their own servers, add more server settings for community hosts and more Steam achievements, and keep improving performance and visuals. The exact feature set may change based on player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is playable from start to finish of a survival run on the official dedicated servers. Working today: a 20 x 20 km seeded world with towns, farms, forests and lakes; third-person movement, melee and firearms combat; zombies that see, hear and chase; over 450 lootable items with loot tables; crafting with recipes learned from books and notes; base building with walls, doors, gates, fences, floors, roofs, barricades, storage and traps; a survival model with hunger, thirst, fatigue, stress, pain, temperature, wetness, food spoilage and injuries tracked per body region; farming and rain collection; drivable vehicles; day and night with weather; a character creator; thirteen skills; parties, chat, a map, name tags, sleeping bags and hideouts as respawn points; trading with traders and other players; a server browser with official and community servers; and persistent worlds that keep your progress. Expect bugs, placeholder art in places, balance changes and occasional world resets between major updates. Everything listed in the About section is in the current build, except hosting your own dedicated server, which comes in a later update.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The game is priced lower during Early Access as a thank you to the players who join us early. We plan to raise the price when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We play on the official servers alongside the community and read everything. Feedback and bug reports come in through the Steam Community forums, our Discord and the in-game bug report, and we publish patch notes with every update, both on Steam and in the game's main menu. Features and balance changes are discussed openly before they ship.”

About This Game

A county that stopped answering.

Northgrave County was an ordinary place: quiet suburbs, a main street, farms along the river. Then the roads filled up and the radios went quiet. You arrive after the collapse with a backpack and not much else. The houses are still full of what people left behind. The streets are not empty.

Northgrave County is an online survival game played in third person on persistent dedicated servers. Survive on your own or team up with friends, scavenge, craft, build and hold out as long as you can.

Explore a 20 x 20 km county

Towns and villages, farms, pine and autumn forest, lakes and rivers, generated from a seed. Everyone on the official servers shares the same map, so the towns you learn stay where they are. Police stations, hospitals and military sites are dangerous, and worth it.

Scavenge over 450 items

Search cupboards, fridges, shelves, crates and vehicles. What you find depends on where you look: a pharmacy holds medicine, a hardware store holds tools, a supermarket holds food. Food spoils, weapons wear out and ammunition is scarce.

Craft, build and fortify

Turn scrap into tools, gear and building kits. Learn recipes from books and survivor notes. Claim a safehouse, then place walls, doors, gates, fences, floors and roofs, and add barricades, workbenches, storage, beds, lights and traps.

Survive the body, not just the dead

Hunger, thirst, fatigue, stress, pain, body temperature and wetness all matter. Wounds are tracked by body region, with bleeding, fractures and infection that bandages, splints and stitches can treat. Clothing keeps you warm and dry and can stop bites and scratches.

Noise is the enemy

Gunshots, engines, breaking windows and running all carry. Zombies investigate what they hear, and crowds drift towards loud places. Night is far more dangerous than day, and rain, fog and storms change how far you can see.

Farm, drive, trade

Plant seeds in planter boxes, collect rain water and harvest crops. Find and repair sedans, pickups, vans and trucks that need fuel, batteries and tires. Meet traders or trade directly with other players.

Your survivor

Create your character: male or female, face, skin tone, hair, height and build. Thirteen skills, from Melee and Firearms to Carpentry, Cooking, First Aid, Farming and Mechanics, grow as you use them and survive death with you.

Together

Form a party, chat with everyone or just your team, and see your friends on the map. Sleeping bags and hideouts let you choose where you wake up after a bad night. Join the official servers or browse community servers. Files for hosting your own dedicated server are coming in a later update.

Early Access

Northgrave County is in active development. Expect regular updates, new items and features, and the occasional rough edge.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI tools were used during development to create some of the pre-made content that ships with the game. This includes concept and key art (for example the main menu background and store artwork), a large part of the 3D props, furniture, building pieces and item models, the inventory item icons, and some textures. All of this content was generated before release, then reviewed, edited and placed by the developer; nothing is generated while you play. Character models, animations, zombies and several asset packs are licensed third-party content. AI tools also assisted with programming and with drafting some written text, such as parts of the store page; the game's design and all final content were chosen and reviewed by the developer. The game does not generate any content or code during gameplay and does not connect to any AI service while you play.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Northgrave County is a zombie survival game. Players fight zombies with melee weapons and firearms, and zombies attack players. Fights show blood, wounds and corpses, and the world contains dead bodies, body bags and crash sites. Players can be injured, bleed and die, and injuries such as fractures and infections are described in the interface. Players can also hurt each other on servers that enable PvP. Alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, whiskey, vodka) can be found and drunk, and medication items (painkillers, antibiotics, sleeping pills, morphine, adrenaline) are used as medical supplies. There is no nudity or sexual content; the character creator shows survivors in underwear. Chat is written by players and is not moderated.
