What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Mercenary Charter is playable from the first contract to the Guild's higher ranks, and the core is in place: the company, the roads, the contracts and the battles. What it needs now is players. Which contracts feel thin, where the money runs short, which fights feel unfair. Early Access lets the game grow with that feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“More kinds of work: holding a river crossing, guarding a mine and hauling ore. Mining and crafting, with a working smithy. Towns that trade in what their country makes. More enemies and more ground to fight them on. Larger battlefields for bigger fights. A guided start for a new company, and more road encounters across every region.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Eight towns, twenty-eight villages and the roads between them. Escorts, debt collection, clearing out camps, night watches and bounties. A company of men who get paid, get hurt, level up, and leave when the money stops. Turn-based battles on painted fields. The Guild's ranks from F to S are in place. Expect rough edges and changes to the balance as the game grows.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may rise when the full version is released. Anyone who buys during Early Access keeps everything that comes after at no extra cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam discussions, where every report is read, and the game's own Report a bug button, which opens the folder with the game's log so it can be attached. Every update comes with notes on what changed and why.”

About This Game

You're the captain of a mercenary company. The Guild holds your charter. Nobody owes you anything.

Start at rank F with a few men, a wagon and a purse that won't last a month. Take work from the boards in the towns. Escort a caravan. Collect a debt from a village that can't pay. Clear out a camp. Stand watch over a village for a week of nights. Hunt down a named band for the bounty on their heads. Every offer shows the pay, the days you have, and why anyone's asking.

The men are yours to keep alive.

Each one has a name, a trade, wounds that leave scars, and a wage he expects on time. Feed them, rest them, mend their kit. Lose a fight and men die for good. Run out of money and they leave.

The fights are turn-based, on a hex grid, on painted battlefields.

Every road, town gate, village and camp has its own field. Read the ground, hold a line, pick your targets. A bad fight can be walked away from, at a price.

The country moves without you.

Eight towns and twenty-eight villages, joined by roads that bandits and goblins work. Patrols win and lose. Raided villages stay poor. A goblin warren in the east grows while you look the other way. Walk away from a village you were paid to protect and it remembers.

Climb the Guild's ranks from F to S.

The Guild sets a task at each rank. Meet it and you rise. Reach S and the campaign ends, and the game tells you what your company became.

No magic. No chosen one. Just steel, coin and the road.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Mercenary Charter was designed, directed and playtested by a solo developer over many months. AI tools helped produce artwork and text, and every piece was chosen, edited and fitted into the game by hand. Nothing is generated by AI while you play.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Turn-based battles between armed men with swords, axes, bows and crossbows. Characters bleed, are wounded, and can die permanently. Some defeated enemies are shown with blood and the occasional severed head, in pixel art. Characters drink in inns and taverns. There is no sexual content.
