What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Ares Program combines underground colony survival with direct control of individual colonists in combat. Oxygen, heat, food and power management must work alongside raids, body-part injuries, rescue and treatment. Early Access will help us refine this combination with player feedback, with particular attention to combat systems, raid difficulty and balance, as well as long-session performance, save reliability and usability.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our current target is to leave Early Access within approximately two months of its start. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed release date. We may adjust the schedule based on stability, player feedback and the readiness of the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“A major goal for the full version is to develop the combat and colony-defense systems further. We plan to expand weapons and equipment, improve enemy behavior and raid variety, and refine aiming, cover, body-part injury, rescue and treatment balance. We also plan to expand research and production, refine farming and colony progression, and improve onboarding, usability, performance and stability. These are development goals and may change with Early Access feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current development build includes procedurally generated Martian terrain, tile-based mining and construction, individual colonists with skills and needs, schedules and priorities, farming and cooking, research and building unlocks, gas and liquid simulation, temperature and phase changes, pipes, pumps, tanks, power networks and industrial production. A first combat foundation is playable: draft colonists, issue individual or group move and attack orders, fight armed raiders, and manage body-part injuries, pain, incapacitation, rescue and treatment. Daily events also include mineral meteor impacts and crash survivors. Weapons and equipment progression, expanded enemy behavior and combat balance are still being developed. The game is single-player and supports interfaces in English, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Russian and Spanish (Spain). Bugs and performance issues may occur during development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We currently plan a modest price increase when the game leaves Early Access. The final price and timing have not yet been fixed.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will collect bug reports, suggestions and balance feedback through the Steam discussion forums. Feedback on combat, colony defense, raid difficulty, injuries and recovery will be especially valuable during Early Access. Reproduction steps, save files and diagnostic logs can help us investigate problems. We plan to share development progress and explain significant changes through Steam announcements and discussions.”

About This Game

Build a new home beneath Mars

Ares Program is a single-player, 2D colony survival simulation that combines underground base building with tactical control of individual colonists in combat. Lead a small group of survivors below the Martian surface, where every room you excavate and every pipe you connect becomes part of a growing underground settlement.

Dig, build and expand

Explore procedurally generated terrain with distinct geological layers. Mine resources, organize hauling and construct living spaces, farms and industrial facilities. Shape your colony one tile at a time.

Keep your colony alive

Oxygen, heat, water and electricity are connected parts of daily life. Route gases and liquids through pipes, store supplies in tanks and build power networks. Temperature, heat transfer and changes of state make the environment something to understand and manage.

Draft your colonists and defend the colony

Survival is also about protecting the people who keep your base running. Draft individual colonists or a group, give move and attack orders, and fight armed raiders. Terrain cover, line of sight and body-part hits affect combat. Injuries cause pain and reduce working ability; rescue incapacitated survivors and provide bed rest and medical treatment. Difficulty and colony wealth influence raid strength. This first combat foundation is playable and continues to evolve.

Look after individual survivors

Assign priorities and schedules to colonists with their own names, appearances and skills. Balance work with food, sleep and other needs, and manage the happiness and stress of the people keeping your colony running.

Grow food and develop industry

Cultivate potatoes and hydroponic crops, cook meals and keep production supplied. Process raw materials, smelt metal and research new facilities as your settlement develops.

Read the systems around you

Use overlays to inspect gases, liquids, temperature, power and sunlight. Follow the flow of resources through your base and adjust its layout as your needs change.

Development and release goals

Combat and colony defense are a major focus for Early Access and the full release. We plan to expand weapons and equipment, improve enemy behavior and raid variety, and refine aiming, cover, injuries, rescue and treatment balance alongside survival, research and production. These are development goals and may change with player feedback.

Interfaces are available in English, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Russian and Spanish (Spain).

Ares Program is currently in development. Screenshots and footage show the development build; content, balance and presentation may change before release.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI tools were used to help create some building, character and environment artwork, promotional art, and drafts of some descriptions and localized text. These assets and text are reviewed and edited during development before inclusion in the game and its marketing materials. The game does not generate content during play or connect to external generative AI services.
