The Last Reel is a 2D horror adventure set in Japan, where the world and its monstrous inhabitants are brought to life in the rubber-hose style of 1930s animation. Beneath the playful shapes and familiar cartoon expressions lies something sinister.

Follow a protagonist living with depression as he explores an unsettling world, struggles with hallucinations, and tries to make sense of what is happening around him. Explore unfamiliar places and confront the uncertainty of his own perceptions while searching for a way forward.

Escape a prison, travel through rain-soaked Kyoto, and race through Tokyo as strange creatures pursue you. Solve environmental puzzles, survive deadly traps, and find your way through places where danger can hide behind a welcoming smile.

Hold on to your sanity

Manage a sanity system that brings the protagonist’s psychological struggle into the journey. As his sanity declines, hallucinations disturb his perception. Find and take pills to restore sanity while navigating the dangers around him.

Push objects, operate machinery, and use your surroundings to overcome obstacles. Hide behind cover, create distractions, and outsmart monsters when running alone cannot save you.

Generative AI was used during development to create environment artwork, props, and other visual assets from text prompts. Character designs and initial artwork were hand-drawn by the developer, then further developed and animated using AI tools. Store artwork combines AI-generated backgrounds with AI-assisted versions of these hand-drawn characters.
Music and sound effects were generated using AI tools, and localization translations were AI-assisted. Code was written with generative AI assistance and manually debugged by the developer. Level layouts and lighting were designed by the developer within the Godot engine.
