What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“TRAPPIST-1 is an ambitious space-colonization simulation built around the challenges of establishing a human presence in another star system. We want to build a game where planetary environments, resource extraction, industrial production, and interplanetary logistics form a connected system — one where the survival and growth of a colony depend on the infrastructure it builds and the resources it can secure.

Developing a simulation of this scope involves many interconnected systems, and we believe the game will benefit from being shaped by the people who play it. Early Access will allow us to gather feedback, identify problems, refine the balance of the simulation, and prioritise the features that matter most to players.

Our goal is to develop TRAPPIST-1 into a deeper and more complete colonization experience over time. We intend to be transparent about the game's current limitations, share progress as development continues, and use community feedback to help guide its evolution.

We are building this game for players who enjoy complex systems, meaningful logistical decisions, and the challenge of turning an inhospitable alien world into a functioning human settlement.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect TRAPPIST-1 to remain in Early Access for approximately 2–3 years. This will give us time to expand the simulation, improve the balance and interdependence of its systems, incorporate community feedback, and develop the game toward our intended scope. The timeline is an estimate, and we will prioritise delivering a stable, satisfying experience over meeting an arbitrary release date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of TRAPPIST-1 will build on the core colonization and resource-management simulation available in Early Access.

During Early Access, we plan to refine the existing systems, improve stability and performance, and expand the interactions between resource extraction, industrial production, infrastructure, colony development, and environmental hazards. Community feedback will help us identify which areas need the most attention.

Our goal for the full release is a more complete and cohesive simulation in which the different stages of establishing and developing a human presence in the TRAPPIST-1 system are connected by meaningful logistical and economic decisions. We also intend to improve the presentation, usability, and overall depth of the experience as development progresses.

The exact scope will depend on development priorities and player feedback. We will communicate significant changes to our plans throughout Early Access, and we will aim to make the transition to full release when the game delivers a stable and satisfying experience consistent with our vision.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“TRAPPIST-1 is currently in active development, with its core simulation systems being built and integrated into a playable colonization experience.

The game is focused on the challenges of establishing a human settlement in the TRAPPIST-1 star system. Its simulation is built around resource extraction, industrial production, infrastructure, material logistics, colony development, and the environmental challenges of operating on alien worlds.

The Early Access version will provide the foundation for this experience, allowing players to begin developing a colony and engage with the interconnected systems that support its growth. The simulation is still evolving, and some systems may be incomplete, require balancing, or lack the depth planned for the full release.

Players should expect an unfinished game that will change throughout development. We intend to use Early Access to improve stability, refine existing mechanics, expand the simulation, and incorporate community feedback as we work toward the full vision for TRAPPIST-1.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We expect the price of TRAPPIST-1 to increase upon full release as the game expands in content, depth, and overall scope. Players who purchase the game during Early Access will receive the full game, including subsequent updates, without having to purchase it again.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be an important part of TRAPPIST-1's development throughout Early Access.

We plan to use player feedback to identify bugs, improve usability, balance the simulation, and understand which systems offer the most engaging decisions and which need further work. We are particularly interested in feedback on the relationships between resource extraction, industrial production, infrastructure, logistics, and colony development.

We intend to engage with players through the Steam Community discussions, review feedback and bug reports, and share development updates as the game evolves. Where practical, we will use this feedback to prioritise improvements and refine existing mechanics.

TRAPPIST-1 has an ambitious long-term vision, and community input will help us realise it. While not every suggestion can be implemented, we aim to communicate openly about development priorities and make the Early Access process a genuine opportunity to improve the game together.”

About This Game

Forty light-years from Earth, seven rocky worlds circle a dim red star.

You are the first expedition to reach it. Or so you think.

TRAPPIST-1 is a hard-science strategy game about settling the real TRAPPIST-1 system. Build industry on the surface of seven simulated exoplanets, carry what you make between them on real orbital transfers, and keep a colony alive under a flaring star until it can build the ship that takes humanity onwards.

Two loops, one economy

On the ground you lay out mines, factories, depots, biodomes and launch pads on a hex grid that is the planet’s real surface, about 8,000 hexes a world, linked by road, rail and maglev. In orbit you plan the transfers that carry cargo and colonists where they are needed. Neither half works alone: a spacecraft is only as good as the supply chain behind it, and a colony is only as good as the launch windows it can reach. Water is mined, split and burned as propellant, so every launch is paid for on the ground.

Real orbits, real choices

The planets move on orbits from the published ephemeris, and every transfer does the real energy calculation. You never do the math: for each journey the planner offers the route that spends the least propellant, the one that arrives earliest, and a balance between them. Miss a window and the same arc can cost twice the fuel. As on real missions, you choose what to spend: propellant or time.

Real rock, real chemistry

Nothing is invented. Each hex’s geology is derived from the planet’s own data, a mine yields what its rock contains, and every recipe conserves mass: rock in, metal, oxygen and slag out. Any silicate can be smelted with enough energy, but ore bodies are the shortcut, and carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus are what rock lacks. Those come from ice, air, brine and living ground. They are why the worlds differ, and why you will need more than one.

Seven worlds facing a star

Every planet in TRAPPIST-1 is tidally locked. Like our moon, they always show the same side. Dayside is energy, nigtside is frozen water. Where to establish your colony is your first decision: Survey from orbit, make your choice, and begin your adventure.

Space is the enemy

TRAPPIST-1 is hard sci-fi. No alien fleets, no space dogfights. The danger is the star's flares, the cold, the distance, and a colony that runs out of life support. Rivalries are fought with time and distance. Drone swarms, kinetic impactors and countermeasures.

Key features

  • Settle seven worlds, their moons and trojans, modelled on the real TRAPPIST-1 system: over 60,000 playable hexes in one seamless system

  • A Factorio-style manufacturing economy built on real geology and mass-conserving chemistry

  • Orbits from the observed ephemeris, with launch windows and propellant computed rather than scripted

  • Surface industry and orbital logistics form a single connected economy

  • A different system every playthrough: atmospheres, deposits and living ground vary with each roll

  • You only know what you have scanned: survey from orbit, prospect on the ground

  • Wake your sleeping colonists as fast as you can house and feed them, and grow from a landing to a city to an orbital shipyard

  • The goal: a self-sufficient colony that builds the ship for the next star, LHS 1140 b, 22 light-years on

  • Planned: rival AI expeditions playing by the same physics, fought with drones and kinetic impactors rather than battleships

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

This game is made by a solo developer who uses generative AI tools as part of production. AI tools were used to help create 3D models, some in-game text and music, which were then reviewed and edited by the developer. AI coding assistants were used in programming. The game's design, systems and creative direction are the developer's own. No content is generated by AI while you play.
