About This Software

Pixel art with an AI copilot

Type what you want - "a 32x32 red potion bottle", "a 16x16 grass tile that tiles seamlessly" - and PixelForge Studio draws it straight onto a real pixel canvas you can keep editing by hand.

Write it, don't draw it from scratch

The AI works on an actual pixel document (layers, frames, palette) - not a flat image. Every stroke it makes is a normal edit: undo it, tweak it, paint over it. Nothing is locked away.

  • Props, tiles, terrain, buildings, icons - what 2D pixel games actually need
  • Works from a text description, or from a reference image you attach
  • Tell it a view (front / 3-4 top-down / isometric / side) and it stays in that view
  • Multi-frame animation requests ("a 6-frame walk cycle, 48x48") are supported

A real editor, not a toy

  • Layers (visibility, opacity, 12 blend modes), frames, animation tags, onion skin
  • Selection tools: rectangular marquee, lasso, magic wand - with a floating selection you can drag, drop with Enter, and discard with Esc
  • Symmetry, pixel-perfect strokes, grid, checkerboard, undo/redo
  • Palette panel with a live canvas colour table - every colour on your canvas, ready to reuse
  • Multiple sprites open at once, each with its own AI chat sessions
  • 11 interface languages, dark / light / midnight themes
  • Export PNG, GIF, APNG and sprite sheets; projects are saved as .pforge

One-time purchase, bring your own AI key (BYOK)

PixelForge Studio is a one-time purchase - no subscription, no credit packs, no microtransactions. The AI assistant is separate: you connect your own account with a provider you choose - DeepSeek, OpenAI, Moonshot (Kimi), Zhipu, Qwen, SiliconFlow, OpenRouter, or a local model via Ollama / LM Studio.

  • Your key is stored on your machine only, encrypted (Windows DPAPI), and sent straight to the provider you picked - it never passes through us
  • AI usage is billed by your provider at their own rates; we charge nothing on top of the purchase price and set no quota
  • A "Test connection" button checks your key, endpoint and model name before you start

What it can't do (yet)

Pixel art of human and animal characters with complex anatomy is the hard part for every text-to-pixel approach: PixelForge Studio does props, tiles, environment and simple characters well, and human anatomy is still improving. If you need a fully hand-drawn hero sprite, this is a tool to speed you up - not a replacement for a human artist.

Built-in content filter

PixelForge Studio blocks requests for sexual content involving minors, explicit sexual content, instructions for illegal manufacture, and extremist hate propaganda before anything is sent to the AI. Everything else is your call, and your provider's own policy still applies.

Requirements

Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit. An internet connection is required only for the optional AI features - the editor, layers, animation, palette and export all work fully offline. AI usage is optional and is billed by the provider account you connect.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

This software includes an optional AI assistant that can draw on the canvas from
a text description.

It is "bring your own key" (BYOK): the AI features work only with your own
account at a third-party AI provider that you choose and pay for yourself
(OpenAI, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Zhipu, Qwen, OpenRouter, or a local model running
on your own machine via Ollama / LM Studio). We do not host, resell or proxy any
AI service, we do not sell AI usage, and we take no cut of it. The editor itself
works fully offline with no AI connection at all.

AI output is applied to your canvas as ordinary, undoable edits - you can undo,
paint over or delete anything the AI produces.

Guardrails: every AI request passes through a built-in, offline content filter
before it is sent to the provider. It blocks requests for (1) sexual content
involving minors, (2) explicit sexual content, (3) instructions for illegal
manufacture, and (4) hate or extremist propaganda. Filtered requests are never
sent. Anything not blocked remains subject to your provider's own usage policies.

Pre-generated AI content: the application icon and store artwork were created
with AI tools and then edited by hand; parts of the source code were written with
the help of AI coding assistants.
