What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Kingsreach is playable today, but it is still in active development. We are using Early Access to grow the game together with its players: balancing the economy, raids and computer opponents, adding more buildings, units and features, and expanding Conquest mode with more leaders and empires. The community's feedback will directly decide what we prioritise next.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect about 6 months in Early Access, depending on the feedback we receive.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“What the finished game will look like depends on the feedback and comments from our buyers and the community. Today's modes will stay, and, where it makes sense, we plan to work on balance for raids and Conquest AI, more buildings and upgrades, trade between empires, siege units, richer diplomacy, a more guided tutorial, more events, and polish on visuals, sound and performance, prioritising whatever players ask for most.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Kingsreach already has many features and is playable from start to finish: build a kingdom from a Great Hall to a citadel of ninety villagers, survive goblin, orc and troll raids through four seasons, play the free Playground, generate walled cities, and fight or ally in Conquest with up to four empires on one map. It is still in development, though: balance is still being tuned, especially on Hard difficulty and in Conquest, some systems are simpler than we want them to be in the end, and more can be added depending on the ideas and suggestions of the community.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features, so players who buy during Early Access get the lowest price. We will announce any price change in advance on the news page.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read the Steam discussions and reviews closely and will use bug reports and suggestions to decide what to add and rebalance. We will post regular updates and patch notes in the news section.”

About This Game

From a campfire to a citadel

Kingsreach is a 3D medieval city builder and kingdom simulation. You start with a Great Hall and a handful of villagers. Place huts, lumberjacks, farms and sawmills and watch your people carry the logs home, tend the fields and go to bed at dusk. Grow a camp into a walled citadel, keep your people fed and happy through the seasons, and raise towers, barracks and gates before the goblins land.

What makes it different

  • A village that lives. Every villager has a name, a face, a trade, a home and a daily routine. They fell trees, cut stone, mine ore, hunt, fish, farm, bake and brew, and they fight when the raiders come.
  • A real economy. Wheat to flour to bread, barley to beer, ore to metal. A market buys and sells every good, and your soldiers need metal from an armory to fight at full strength.
  • Place anything freely. Drag roads, fences and walls, rotate buildings and watch the ground level itself under every foundation. Dozens of buildings, each with five levels from thatched hut to legendary hall.
  • Seasons, weather and night. Blossom in spring, harvest in autumn, snow and ice in winter, rain and fog, glowing windows and fireflies after dark.
  • Raids that matter. War drums at dusk, then goblins, orcs and trolls land on the shore. Towers, archers on the walls, knights, catapults and gates hold them back; burning buildings are a real loss.
  • Four biomes and any land. Meadow, frozen Frostmark, Ember Badlands and the Mire of Whispers swamp with its spiders and snakes. Islands or open plains and mountains, maps of 128, 256 or 512 tiles.

Modes

  • New Kingdom: the full game with objectives, raids and a victory at ninety villagers.
  • Playground: a free sandbox with optional unlimited resources and no enemies.
  • City Generator: choose a shape, size, walls and farms and get a ready-made city to explore or defend.
  • Conquest: four empires on one huge map, eight rulers to choose from, truces, alliances and war. Play one empire or just watch the computer fight it out.
  • Photo mode for postcards of your kingdom.

At a glance

  • Single player, mouse and keyboard
  • Procedural worlds from a seed, four biomes, three map sizes
  • Original soundtrack that changes with the hour and the danger
  • Three save slots plus autosave

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The logo, key art, villager and ruler portraits, and the music were produced with generative AI tools (through Artlist and a local Stable Diffusion setup) and then selected and edited by the developer. The 3D world, buildings, characters and animals are procedural low-poly models built in code, and the sound effects are synthesised in the game. No content is generated while the game is running; everything is pre-generated and shipped in the build. No real people's likenesses or voices are used.
