About This Game

STORY

In 1888, New York State passed a new law: condemned prisoners would be executed by electric current.

Vera was swept up in the War of the Currents between Edison and Westinghouse, and became the first person to sit in the electric chair.

Helen, the warden of Auburn Prison, was forced to take on the state's assignment and carry the execution forward.

In the face of death, the two of them came to a new understanding of faith and of life.

CHARACTERS

Helen Durston

Warden of Auburn Prison. She fought in the Civil War, worked as a lawyer, and lost in party

politics. Those years taught her to stay as calm and as restrained as she could — but they closed

off her way of showing feeling, and left her choosing to hold it all down.

Vera Kemmler

A condemned prisoner. She ran off with a lover and made a living selling vegetables in a market.

After killing that lover she turned herself in, and was locked up.

She has no manners and trusts no one, and she is working on a way to get herself out of the death

sentence.

Hazel Brown

Electrical engineer. In a crowd she looks no different from anyone else — until she opens her

mouth, and becomes the centre of attention.

Arrogant and conceited, with no regard at all for anyone else's feelings.

She publicly opposes alternating current, but there are other interests behind her.

Faith Peterson

Chair of the Medical-Legal Society's electrocution committee. A scholarly elite freshly returned

from study abroad; her hobby is writing poetry.

Cute on the outside, a refined egoist underneath.

Georgia Westinghouse

Founder of the Westinghouse Company.

She is known for reliable products, and her firm is one of the leading houses in the

alternating-current camp.

To others she is a well-bred lady who can put anyone at ease — and yet no one gets inside her.

Nika Tesla

A reclusive inventor.

Kind at heart, but no good at getting along with people.

Obsessive about cleanliness; she hates anything dirty.

She believes invention should serve the public, and is looking for a buyer for her

alternating-current generator.

Irene Edison

A public idol and a legendary inventor.

Her temperament is like a wild child's — uncontrollable, and able to ignore anything she has no

interest in.

Fame matters to her more than anything, because fame buys money, status, and more people's

affection.

Joan Morgan

Heir to a financial empire.

She grew up under a strict upbringing; her father is the most influential

financial magnate of the day.

Elegant and full of calculation, good at reckoning and prediction, and set on proving what she can

do.

A later part of the game includes an electrocution, illustrated symbolically as an empty chair with electric arcs —
no body is depicted; there is also a passage of text describing the body afterwards. The game also
contains an 18th-century-style engraving of a crowd at a public execution, and an experiment in
which a dog is electrocuted.

Heavy themes
The story deals throughout with capital punishment, imprisonment, the wavering of religious faith,
and the sustained psychological pressure on a prisoner awaiting execution.
