What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Critters vs. Predators is a living game. Guilds, three-day raids, timed events and the PvP arena only find their right balance with real players in them, and we would rather tune those numbers with you than guess at them alone. Early Access lets us launch a complete, playable game now, then grow the campaign, the critter roster and the raid list with your feedback shaping each update. We are a one-person studio, and your reports are the fastest way for us to find what matters.
”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan on roughly 3 to 6 months. The length depends on how quickly the live systems settle and how much of the planned content makes it in, so we will post progress in the community hub rather than promise a date.
”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to grow the game in scope rather than change what it is. Our intentions for the full version include more campaign chapters and new predators to face, more critters to collect and promote, more guild raids with new bosses leading up to the Honey Badger, a wider variety of timed events, deeper guild features, and continued balance work on fights, rewards and progression. We also plan to improve controller and Steam Deck support and to add more languages. Everything in this list is an intention, not a promise, and the order may change based on what players ask for.
”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to finish. It includes 17 collectible critters in 7 classes with stars, levels, six-slot gear tiers and crafting; a five-chapter campaign of 10 nodes and three stages each, on normal and hard, with a boss at the end of every chapter; a weekly 20-floor Colosseum; a PvP arena with other players' defence squads; guilds with chat; the first three-day guild raid with a shared prize pool; timed events every few days; a daily login calendar and daily quests; cloud saves tied to your Steam account; and Steam achievements. Battles can be played on auto or fully by hand. The online services run on our own server. What is still rough: the numbers behind raids and some rewards are being tuned, there is one raid so far, and text is English only.
”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new chapters, critters and raids, so buying during Early Access means paying less for the same game as it grows. There are no purchases inside the game that affect a critter's strength, and we do not plan to add any.
”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The Steam community hub and our own forum where we read feedback, and the game has a bug report button in its settings that sends reports straight to our public bug tracker, so you can see what has been fixed and what is next. Our server shows us how raids, events and PvP are actually going, and we plan to post what we learn and what we are changing in regular update notes. Balance changes, new critters and raid designs will be discussed in the hub before they ship, and the most requested items move up the list.

About This Game

The food chain is fighting back.

Bunnies in thimble helmets. A hedgehog paladin with a pebble war hammer. A skunk whose stink cloud clears a whole battlefield. In Critters vs. Predators, the smallest animals in the garden band together against the foxes, snakes, hawks and barn cats that hunt them.

Collect your squad

- 33 critters to collect, from healers and mages to hunters, rogues, berserkers and tanks, each with their own attack and special ability.

- Earn each critter's badges to unlock it, then promote it up to five stars.

- Level them up, fill six gear slots per tier and craft better parts from the ones you find.

Fight on auto, or call every move

- Battles play themselves: watch your plan pay off.

- Or switch to manual: attack, defend, taunt with your tanks, or unleash an ability, with a timer to keep the fight moving.

- Click any enemy to focus your squad on it, and watch out: the predators call targets of their own.

Out-think the food chain

- A hedgehog up front stops a fox's pounce. A guinea pig's squeal snaps allies out of a weasel's trance. A frog's tongue yanks a stalking barn cat out of its pounce.

- Five chapters across the barnyard, the garden, the wheat field, the tool shed and the cornfield: 10 nodes each, three stages a node, on normal and hard.

- Every chapter ends with a boss: the young predator on normal, its grown-up parent on hard.

Test your squad

- The Colosseum: 20 floors of hard predator squads that reset every week, with Old Red on floor 10 and Big Grizz the bear on floor 20.

- The PvP arena: set a defence squad and climb the ranks against other players' critters.

Band together

- Join a guild, chat, and raid: the whole guild chips away at the barn cats over three days, with a prize pool of gold, badges and gear shared out by the damage each member dealt.

- Events every few days feature one critter and pay its badges.

- Try the free demo: your save carries over when you buy the game.

Fair by design

- No pay-to-win. Nothing that makes a critter stronger is for sale. Every critter can be earned by playing.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The character art, character poses, battle backgrounds, item and interface icons, the 3D models used in the opening cutscene, the music and the sound effects were created with generative AI tools that we ran on our own computers. We wrote the prompts and designs, then reviewed, selected, corrected and edited every asset by hand: flawed results (extra hands, extra heads, wrong colours) were regenerated or fixed before anything went into the game. The fonts are human-made open-licence fonts, and the game design, characters, abilities and all written text are our own.
