What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Grindwick already has a playable core: hunt monsters, develop combat skills, find equipment, improve your build, and head back out. The part that needs the most work now is how that progression feels over time. Early Access will let me work with players on the balance of EXP, gold, item drops, and dungeon difficulty while I improve boss encounters, the interface, and stability. I'm developing the game on my own, and feedback from people who enjoy long-term grinding matters to me.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“If development stays on track and no serious problems come up, I currently aim to release version 1.0 in April 2027. This is a target rather than a guaranteed date. I want to leave Early Access when progression, the economy, boss fights, and the overall experience are ready.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to add around five endgame bosses and around six more dungeons to hunt. I also want to give bosses more interesting and demanding attack patterns, improve the balance of progression, gold, and equipment drops, polish the interface, and fix bugs. These are current goals and may change during development. The focus will stay on hunting, loot, and long-term character growth. Quests are not part of the plan.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is playable online, solo or in a party of up to four. It has instanced expeditions, three combat styles, skills that improve through use, a passive tree, equipment and loot, crafting and enchanting, an Auction House, fishing, pets, dedicated boss dungeons designed for parties, and the leaderboard-focused Void Trials. The core hunt, return, upgrade, and hunt again loop is in place.

Balance still needs work, especially gold income and item drops. Bosses have their own mechanics, which I'm continuing to improve. Bugs are also possible. Death costs character EXP and combat skill progress. No character progress resets are planned during Early Access or for the 1.0 release. In exceptional cases, such as a serious exploit, an emergency rollback may be necessary, for example reverting the last 1–3 days of progress.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The base game is free to play, and I plan to keep it free after Early Access. I plan to offer optional paid outfits and pet appearances. I also plan a premium account that lets players save character build presets and gives access to selected outfits and pet appearances. The timing of these paid options has not been set.

There will never be pay-to-win in Grindwick, in any form. I will not sell character power, EXP or level boosts, gold, items, improved drop rates, or faster progression. Progress must be earned by playing.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I collect feedback mainly through the Grindwick Discord community. Bug reports and details about technical problems are especially helpful. I also want to hear how progression, gold and loot, dungeon difficulty, boss mechanics, and the interface feel in practice. I read reports and suggestions there and use them to decide what needs attention in the next updates. I will keep players informed as the game changes.”

About This Game

Grindwick is a free-to-play 2D online action RPG where the grind is the point. Head into a dungeon, cut down monsters, collect loot, return to the Explorer's Guild, and prepare to do it again. Long-term character growth and the search for better gear drive every trip.

ZERO QUESTS

Quests are not part of Grindwick's design. You can take simple monster-kill tasks to earn gold, but there is no story campaign or quest chain telling you where to go next. Choose a place to hunt and stay as long as you want. Expeditions cost gold to unlock, and their recommended levels are only suggestions. Push into a harder dungeon, or farm an easier one until your build is ready.

GROW STRONGER BY PLAYING

Switch between Melee, Magic, and Distance combat by changing weapons at the Guild. Each style has its own spells, but becoming skilled with a weapon takes time. Improve your combat skills by fighting, or train weapon skills at a practice dummy in town. Spend points in the passive tree to shape the build you want to play.

HUNT FOR BETTER GEAR

Items vary in rarity and stats. Most of your progress comes from fighting monsters and finding the next piece of equipment worth keeping. Back at the Guild, dismantle unwanted gear into dust, refine it, craft a random item, or enchant equipment for better stats. The Auction House lets you trade any piece of equipment with other players. Pets offer small bonuses, and you can go fishing when you want a break from the dungeon. Then head out again.

PLAY ALONE OR TOGETHER

Meet other players in shared hubs, or enter an expedition alone. Parties of up to four get their own expedition instance. Loot found together goes into a shared Expedition Backpack, where any party member can take it.

PUSH YOUR BUILD

Progress through levels 1–100, then continue the grind on endgame maps. In regular expeditions, increase the Grind Level for tougher enemies and better rewards. Bosses have their own dungeons and mechanics, and you'll need a party to take them on. Void Trials offer a separate ranking challenge with no EXP, gold, or loot rewards. Death costs character EXP and combat skill progress. Taking on a harder fight has a price.

EARLY ACCESS

Grindwick is playable, but its balance is still being shaped. Gold income, item drops, boss fights, the interface, and bug fixes are my main focus. I plan to further improve boss encounters and expand the endgame with more maps. No character progress resets are planned during Early Access or for the 1.0 release. In exceptional cases, such as a serious exploit, an emergency rollback may be necessary, for example reverting the last 1–3 days of progress.

I'm developing Grindwick on my own. I want the grind to feel worthwhile, and player feedback will help me get the details right.
