You wake in a guest room with a splitting headache. Your wife Alice is right there beside you. A little girl who calls herself Annie says she wants to play a game with you. The stairs are locked, so all you can do is open the doors on the ground floor, one room at a time.

◆ Carry the lamp: The oil lamp is your only light. The oil burns down, and you strike the matches yourself. Before you walk into somewhere with no light, be sure you can get back out.

◆ Turn the rooms over: Drawers, sinks, things hanging on the wall. Anything you can examine is outlined for you. This house keeps what matters lying around, among the traces of ordinary life.

◆ Open it with your hands: A stuck drawer, a knot pulled tight, something sitting in cloudy water, a puzzle box that will not open. The puzzles here want you to reach in, not to pick an answer.

◆ Something is in the hallway: Some of them chase you, some stand and watch you go past, some exist only to blow out your lamp. Running leaves you out of breath, and your stamina is limited.

◆ Play along with the children: There is a group of children in the playground, and they want to play a guessing game. They never say what happens if you get one wrong.

◆ The things you remember: Memories surface while you explore and go into the gallery, slowly filling in the days you and Alice had before all this.

The story will stop and ask you to decide. The game will not tell you which choice is the right one.
