The Ant Game is a real-time colony sim with no floating cursor and no god's-eye view. You live in the dirt as a single ant while a whole colony runs around you: foraging by scent, digging its own nest, raising brood, and fighting beetles, spiders and rival colonies for the same patch of meadow.

Was die Entwickler zu sagen haben:

Wozu Early Access?

„I want to get the game into players' hands early and build the rest of it with them.

The Ant Game is a simulation, and simulations get good by being played. A colony of hundreds of ants, rival colonies with their own minds, seasons, weather, raids and a world boss all push on each other in ways no single developer can fully test alone. Early Access lets me find out what's fun, what's frustrating and what players want to do as an ant, and let that shape what I build next.

There's a lot to play already, but the game is still growing and parts of it are unfinished. I plan to keep adding features and content throughout Early Access, with player feedback guiding what comes first.“

Wie lange wird dieses Spiel ungefähr den Early Access-Status haben?

„I expect the game to be in Early Access for roughly 12–18 months, depending on how much player feedback reshapes the plans. I'd rather take longer and get the colony sim right than rush to a 1.0.“

Wie soll sich die Vollversion von der Early Access-Version unterscheiden?

„The Early Access version already has the core loop: you play one ant inside a real-time colony, forage, dig and plan the nest, raise the brood, evolve the colony, fight beetles, spiders and a world boss, and go to war with rival colonies through four seasons, from your first tunnel to winning or losing the map. Before I call the game complete, I plan to add these major features:
- Running water and changing ground: streams that cross the meadow and reroute your foragers, drought and flooding as the year turns, winter ponds that freeze hard enough to walk across as shortcuts, and autumn winds that blow scent trails off course.
- Fog of war and a colony map: unexplored ground stays hidden, so rival nests have to be found, and a map shows the ground you've explored, your own colonies and every rival nest you've found.
- Rival alliances: rivals that make pacts with each other and gang up on whoever leads the map, guard their territory against each other's foragers, and send raiding parties that carry off the food they find.
- An ability bar and a sprint: active moves for your ant on cooldowns, such as a heavy bite, a lunge, a battle cry and a taunt, plus a sprint with its own stamina bar.
- Running a dynasty: a panel showing where every colony of your line is and what each may do on its own, with daughter colonies that wage their own wars and boss hunts while you're away, within the limits you set.
- A deeper Genome Lab: new traits such as lifespan and dig speed alongside today's five, and a way to undo choices and spend the points again.
- A threat that lives in the nest: rove beetles that slip into big colonies, pass as nestmates and eat the brood until you or your ants track them down.
- More than one way in: dig new entrances up through the surface and move existing ones, changing how you forage and defend.
Alongside those, I plan for the full version to have final art for the Giant Beetle, the elite beetles and the other placeholder sprites, new songs for the soundtrack, controller support, better performance for colonies in the thousands, and a full balance pass of the fights, raids, rival AI and food economy based on player feedback.
The game is made by one person, so the order and details may change with player feedback, and some of these may change shape or give way to better ideas from the community.
This is what I plan to add before I call the game complete.

Playing the ant:
- An ability bar: special moves on cooldowns that cost energy, such as a heavy bite, a lunge, a rally cry and a taunt
- Sprint, with a stamina bar
- Foods that restore different amounts of energy, instead of every meal filling you up
- Digging extra entrances up through the surface, and moving your entrance after you've placed it
- Combat polish: your ant turns to face what it's fighting, a colony level-up refills your health, and the death screen says whether you starved or were killed

The colony and the royal line:
- A Colony Management panel for your whole line: where each colony is on the map, and toggles for what it may do on its own
- Daughter colonies that start their own wars, raids and boss hunts while you're away, within the limits you set in that panel (today they forage, dig, breed and evolve on their own, but never go to war)
- More Genome Lab traits, such as lifespan and dig speed, and a way to undo trait choices and spend the points again
- Foragers that learn to carry more per trip as the colony matures
- A smarter automatic nest planner that places nurseries by soil temperature and moves the brood as the seasons change
- A way to keep your foragers safe inside the nest when danger, such as the Goliath spider, is near
- Stronger defence against beetle raids: workers who run out with the soldiers to meet them, and defenders who hold the door while others hunt down a beetle that got inside

Rivals and war:
- Fog of war: the parts of the meadow your colonies haven't explored stay hidden, so rival nests have to be found
- A colony map with an overview of where the colonies are, and your own colonies always marked, even with Colony Markers turned off
- Rivals that form alliances with each other and gang up on whoever leads the map
- Rivals that patrol their territory against each other, not only against you
- Rival raiding parties that carry off the food they find, so a hungry rival's winter raid really costs you
- Each rival's temperament shaping which Genome Lab traits it picks
- A world setting to choose your rivals' temperaments, from a peaceful sandbox to a pack of warlords
- Victory and defeat screens of their own, and fallen nests that visibly collapse or fade

Creatures and threats:
- Rove beetles, the first threat that lives inside the nest: they slip into big colonies passing as nestmates and eat the brood until your ants find them
- A warning before every beetle raid sets out (today only a raid that gathers at a nearby beetle burrow is announced ahead of time; the rest appear a short walk from your door)
- Their own art for the Giant Beetle and the elite beetles, with a clearer wind-up before the boss's slam

The world and the seasons:
- Streams across the meadow, with stepping-stone crossings that change your foragers' routes
- Drought and flooding (I'm still deciding whether water is something the colony drinks, terrain that changes, or both)
- Frozen ponds you can walk across in winter, opening shortcuts
- Snow flurries on cloudy winter days, and colder winter colours
- Autumn wind that scatters scent trails, and leaves drifting down over the meadow
- Dew that catches the moonlight on clear, cold nights, and scent trails that glow faintly after dark
- More ground clutter at ant scale: seed husks, bark chips, pine needles, and a bottle cap as a landmark

Art and audio:
- Final art in place of every placeholder, including the boss and elites above, the map pins, and colony icons on the HUD drawn in each colony's own colours
- The nuptial flight drawn in the air: the princess takes off, flies over the meadow and lands
- Your own ant, and ants hauling meat, visibly holding what they carry
- A royal cell that looks like the most precious room in the nest, with its own decor and nurses in attendance
- Worn paths on the nest floor where your ants walk most
- More music, especially for rain and the nest, which have one song each today, and music that changes in fog
- Footsteps that crunch in the snow

Quality of life and controls:
- Controller support, and a second key for every action
- An eat key of its own
- A custom cursor that changes over enemies and food
- Load Game showing each world's thumbnail, colony size and time played

Balance and performance:
- A full balance pass from player feedback: how long fights last, the boss and elites, raid size and frequency, rival AI and war bands, Genome Lab costs, how hard winter bites, and the food economy
- Better performance for very large colonies, past a thousand ants

The game is made by one person, so the order and details may change with player feedback, and some of these may change shape or give way to better ideas from the community.
“

Was ist der derzeitige Stand der Early Access-Version?

„The game has been in development since May 2026. It's playable and has a lot of systems in place, but it's still a work in progress: some parts are unfinished and the core loop is still being built out. The current version includes:

Playing as a single ant inside a real-time colony of hundreds, with workers and soldiers choosing their own jobs and foraging by pheromone trails

A side-view nest you dig tile by tile, with planned rooms, three soil layers, boulders, roots, buried seeds, cave-ins, and light underground

The queen, eggs, nursing, food stores, a larder where meat can spoil, and starvation when the stores run dry

Colony levels, a five-trait Genome Lab and six Royal Jelly buffs

A world boss, elite beetles, beetle raids, five species of spider and the Goliath

Rival colonies with temperaments, grudges and war parties that march on your nest

Princesses, nuptial flights, daughter colonies and a bloodline that outlives any one nest

Four seasons, weather, temperature, a full day and night with dynamic lighting, and an original soundtrack

Seeded procedural worlds, Easy, Normal and Hard presets plus dozens of world settings

An in-game Field Guide, tutorial cards, autosave, and remappable controls

Expect rough edges. Combat and difficulty numbers are still being tuned, some enemies use placeholder art, and the game is built for keyboard and mouse (controller support is planned). I work to keep saves loading across updates, but a major update may occasionally need a new world.“

Wird dieses Spiel während und nach Early Access unterschiedlich viel kosten?

„I plan to raise the price gradually as major content and features are added, so the earliest players get the game at its lowest price.“

Wie werden Sie versuchen die Community in den Entwicklungsprozess miteinzubeziehen?

„Player feedback is the main reason the game is in Early Access. I plan to:

Read the Steam forums and reviews and use them to set priorities and find bugs

Run a Discord server for feedback, bug reports, screenshots and talking with me directly

Post patch notes for every update on Steam, and in the game itself through the What's New panel

Keep a public devlog at devappler.io about what I'm working on and why

Ask players about balance directly: the fights, raids and rival AI are exactly the kind of thing that gets better with lots of people playing them

Share seeds: worlds are seeded, so players can share a map and compare runs, and bug reports can come with a seed I can reproduce

I'm one developer, so I can't promise every idea makes it in, but every report gets read.“

Infos zum Spiel

You are one ant.

You don't give the orders from above. You're one ant in the grass, and everything else runs without you.

  • Play the ant. Walk, forage, carry, dig and fight with your own mandibles. Drag seeds home, feed the queen by hand, bite whatever is biting your workers.

  • The colony runs itself. Workers and soldiers bid for the jobs the colony needs: forage, dig, nurse, haul, defend. When food runs low more ants forage; when beetles reach the door, everyone fights. You set the direction and they do the work.

  • Scent trails that think. Foragers lay pheromones as they walk. Good routes to food reinforce themselves and dead ones fade, and the colony only knows about food its scouts have actually found.

  • A living meadow. Four seasons, rain and fog, day and night. Rain washes out trails and sends the beetles home, winter stops the plants growing, and nights get dark enough that you'll be glad of the glowing fungus and the fireflies.

Walk down your entrance and the world turns side-on: a cross-section of the nest you dig, tile by tile.

  • Plan it, or let them. Press B to draw tunnels and rooms (nursery, food and seed stores, larder, royal chamber) and your diggers carve them out. Or leave it to the colony's own planner, which builds whatever the nest is short of.

  • The soil fights back. Dig down through dark topsoil, red subsoil and pale clay. Boulders won't budge, roots take twice the work, and buried seeds are a free meal for the queen.

  • Mind the ceiling. Dig a hall too wide and its roof cracks, then caves in and buries whatever was under it. Nest Plans warns you before it happens.

  • Light underground. Daylight and moonlight pour down the shaft, while glowing fungus and glowworms light the deep passages.

A colony is a queen and everything she needs, and she needs a lot.

  • Feed the queen. Plant matter, seeds and meat all become eggs. Meat is the good stuff: one unit is one egg, with no cooldown. The queen and her eggs show what they need in a bubble.

  • Keep the brood warm. Nurses tend the eggs and move them deeper as the nest grows. Brood hatches fast in warm soil and stalls in frozen soil. You choose how much of it hatches as soldiers.

  • Stock up for winter. Store seeds for the lean months and keep meat in a cool larder before it spoils. Workers eat from the stores, and when the stores run dry they starve.

  • Evolve the genome. Everything the colony does earns XP. Level up and spend perks in the Genome Lab on Agility, Vitality, Mandible Force, Metabolism and Fecundity, which make every ant faster, tougher, deadlier, thriftier and more numerous. Each level also makes you, the ant, harder to kill.

Plenty of things in the meadow eat ants, and a few of them are worth hunting.

  • The Giant Beetle. A world boss in a lair marked on your map. Its carapace shrugs off small bites until you shatter it, which opens a 5-second window where it takes extra damage. Its telegraphed ground slam sends your ants scrambling out of the ring. It also gets stronger as the world levels up.

  • Bring an army. Rally a war band (a dozen soldiers, or every ant you have, hundreds deep) and lead it to the lair. Your band fights whatever you fight.

  • Claim the loot. A kill pays over a third of a colony level in XP, plus a Perk for the Genome Lab (the only way to earn one without levelling) and Royal Jelly for your queen. The jelly rolls one of six colony-wide buffs (Brood Rush, Hardened Carapace, Frenzy, Swift Legs, Rich Harvest, Queen's Vigour), and you can stack three at once. The boss is back five minutes later, and rival colonies send their own hunting parties to get there first.

  • Elites. Tougher beetles with a gold health bar that pay bonus XP. They turn up more often as the world levels, both in the wild and in the raids on your nest.

  • Five spiders, five different fights. The jumping spider pounces from range. The widow bites, then backs off while her venom does the work. The trapdoor spider hides under its lid until something trips its silk lines. The orb weaver's web holds anything that walks into it, whether that's you, a forager or a whole war party. The wolf spider runs down the weakest ant in your band, and pays boss-tier loot when it falls.

  • And the Goliath. 60,000 HP behind armour. It walks in from the edge of the map, heads straight for your front door and hunts every ant in reach. You can outrun it, but your colony can't.

  • MMO-style combat. Click to target, Q to cycle targets, right-click to auto-attack. Crits land in gold, and a real threat table means hitting hard pulls an enemy off your workers and onto you.

You aren't the only colony. Every rival digs, forages, breeds, levels and evolves the same way you do, and they all share your meadow.

  • They have minds of their own. Each rival has a temperament (Warlike, Raiding, Hunting, Peaceful or Scheming) and decides for itself when to build, when to hunt the boss and when to go to war.

  • They remember. Kill their ants, smash their eggs or storm their nest and they'll hold a grudge and come for you later. They pounce when your army is away, and in winter they raid for food once the meadow runs out.

  • War parties. A rival conscripts real ants, musters them, marches them across the map and breaks into your nest, going for the eggs first, then the workers, then the queen. Your soldiers sortie to meet them at the door, and every attacker that falls becomes meat for your queen.

  • Take the fight to them. Rally your own war band, march it to a rival entrance and storm the nest yourself. The last colony standing wins the map.

  • Pick how hostile they are. On Easy they leave you alone until you bite. On Normal, walking into their nest raises the alarm. On Hard they hunt you in the open.

A colony dies with its queen. A bloodline doesn't have to.

  • Raise princesses. Rear royal brood in the royal cell. If the queen falls, a princess takes her place.

  • The nuptial flight. On a warm afternoon after rain, a princess walks out and sets off across the meadow to found a daughter colony. The farther she goes and the more predators on her route, the lower her odds of making it.

  • Daughters inherit. Each daughter carries a random share of her mother's level and genome, sometimes a little and sometimes half, so no two turn out the same.

  • Rule them all. Walk into any nest of your line to take control of it. Lose a nest and your line carries on in the others. It's only game over when the last one falls.

  • Fly On. Outlast every rival and your princess leaves the world you won to found a new one, carrying a roll of your line's genome onto a fresh map.

  • Play as a single ant inside a full real-time colony simulation

  • A side-view nest you dig tile by tile, with rooms, soil layers, boulders, roots and cave-ins

  • Colonies of hundreds of ants, each one choosing its own job

  • A world boss, elite beetles, beetle raids, five species of spider, and the Goliath

  • Rival colonies with their own temperaments, grudges and war parties

  • Colony levels, a five-trait Genome Lab and six Royal Jelly buffs

  • Princesses, nuptial flights, daughter colonies and a bloodline that outlives its nest

  • Four seasons, weather, a working thermometer, and a real day/night cycle with dynamic lighting

  • Procedurally generated, seeded worlds: share a seed to share a map

  • Easy, Normal and Hard presets, plus dozens of world settings to tune

  • An in-game Field Guide and tutorial cards that teach as you play

Offenlegung von KI-generierten Inhalten

Der Spieleentwickler beschreibt den Einsatz von KI-generierten Inhalten in diesem Spiel wie folgt:

This game was made by a solo developer with the help of AI tools. Some of the pixel art was drawn by hand by the developer and then revised with AI tools. Other art (including the logo, interface icons, menu backgrounds and some terrain tiles) was created with an AI pixel-art tool and then edited by the developer. The music and sound effects are synthesized in code, and were composed and designed with the help of an AI assistant. Some in-game text, such as the Field Guide and tutorial tips, was drafted with AI assistance and edited by the developer. No AI is used while you play: nothing is generated live, and the game never connects to an AI service.
