About This Game

Neonrise

It's 2126. Machines run the world. People built them to make decisions for them, and they turned out to be better at it. The world has become a giant tower of skyscrapers reaching for the stars, and the two of you were born at the very bottom, where nobody gets to see the sky. You explore Neonrise City by climbing up from the streets, past the oppressive structures that rule it. Take them down and free Neonrise's sci-fi world, then explore the space beyond.

What you do

In this roguelite brick breaker for two people, each player gets a customizable bar. Both bars can go anywhere along the bottom, and you share three lives. You will get into arguments about who touched the ball last.

When a run goes badly (and it will), you keep the cores you earned. Spend them to get new power-ups, more customization options, and combos. Expect chain lightning, black holes, loads of rockets, nuclear blasts, firestorms and much more.

The brick generation is based on Conway's Game of Life, a maths toy from 1970 where every cell lives or dies depending on its neighbours. Break through the ceiling and the camera rides up with the ball to the next floor, revealing more about Neonrise City's structures.

Beat a boss once and you can start from that floor again.

Yes, the space part is real

Beating the end boss doesn't end the game. You keep climbing, past the Moon, through the solar system, out of the galaxy and into the cosmic web. Every structure, planet, and galaxy on the way is real, and so is its distance. The nearby galaxies and the strands of the web sit where astronomers measured them, taken from published scientific knowledge. Right at the end, past anything a survey has mapped, we had to fill in the rest with creativity.
