YOUR CITY, OR THE NEAREST ONE

The first thing Hive Earth asks for is the name of a city, and you'll probably type your own. If it isn't among the 7,000 real cities on the map, the hive starts from the nearest one and tells you how far away it is. From there it moves on to other cities, picked by distance and by how much biomass they're worth.

HOW IT PLAYS

Biomass comes in on its own. You spend it on four upgrade tracks and choose when to launch the next wave, and that's all the clicking there is. With the game closed the hive keeps growing for up to an hour, so short sessions work best.

THE GLOBE AND THE ATLAS

On the globe it's night and the city lights are on. Each city the hive takes goes dark, and the land around it crusts over. A percentage in the corner of the screen tracks how close humanity is to the irreversibility threshold. The Atlas lists every country the hive has touched and how much of it is gone.

WAVES AND CASTES

Once the hive passes a threshold you can launch a new wave from another city and pick one of two castes for it. You give up the ground you took and keep a permanent multiplier, which grows the longer you wait past the threshold, up to a cap. One caste breaks into big cities, the ones that resist the most. The other spreads faster and further. A run has three waves at most.

LENGTH AND ENDING

The whole run takes eight to ten hours, spread across however many days you like. It ends when humanity crosses the irreversibility threshold, long before the last town falls, and then the rest of the planet goes dark by itself.

You buy it once. There's no premium currency and nothing to unlock with real money.
