About This Game

The Crown has granted you a Royal Charter. Establish a colony, develop its economy, and fulfil the goals of your commission.

Each charter in By Royal Charter is a self-contained, turn-based colony-building challenge played out on a board-like map. Acquire facility cards through a changing selection of Opportunities, place them on suitable land, and connect them into a working economy.

Assign skilled colonists, move goods through your settlement, provide for your people, and ship valuable exports to Europe. Complete your commission to earn Merit and Reputation, unlock Favours and Veteran Colonists, and rise through the Governor ranks.

CHOOSE YOUR CHARTER

Choose from Brief, Standard, and Ambitious commissions. A Brief Charter can be completed in a short session, while larger charters call for bigger settlements, longer production chains, and more demanding goals.

BUILD YOUR COLONY ONE CARD AT A TIME

Each week presents a new selection of Opportunity cards. Buy facilities, recruit specialists, improve production, or reserve a promising Opportunity for later. Place facility cards on suitable plots and build a visible economic engine across the board.

TURN RESOURCES INTO AN ECONOMY

Turn Timber into Lumber, Grain into Bread, Ore into Bullion, and plantation crops into valuable exports. Connect workplaces, storage, and trade routes, then keep every input and output moving.

TRAIN SPECIALISTS

Match colonists to their professions, train Apprentices in Schoolhouses and Colleges, and develop Masters who may return as Veteran Colonists in future charters.

KEEP THE COLONY SUPPLIED

Provide Food, Hearth Fuel, Medical Supplies, Clothing, and Work Supplies. Shortages affect the Health and Morale of your colonists, making a successful economy about more than profit.

TRADE WHAT YOU CANNOT MAKE. EXPORT WHAT EUROPE WANTS.

Buy scarce materials through overland trade, then send valuable goods from the Harbour to meet export goals and earn Gold.
