What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Ammerow already has a complete playable journey from character creation to victory, but its unusual combination of traditional roguelike play, overworld exploration, side-view spelunking and fishing will benefit from broader player experience. Early Access will let us improve balance, accessibility, procedural variety and explanations while expanding and polishing the world. Player feedback will help determine which parts deserve the most attention on the road to version 1.0.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Ammerow to remain in Early Access for approximately 12–16 months, with the goal of reaching version 1.0 by the end of 2027. This timeframe may change as we respond to testing and player feedback, but the planned remaining scope is deliberately focused.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version already contains Ammerow’s complete core: traditional turn-based roguelike play, overworld travel, procedural dungeon descent, side-view spelunking, fishing, permanent death and a path to victory.

For version 1.0, we plan to concentrate on depth, cohesion and usability rather than replacing that foundation. Our main priorities are:
- Expanding the caves with more creatures, discoveries and environmental variety.
- Making fishing a deeper, more rewarding part of long-term exploration.
- Bringing doors, traps, tunnelling and chests consistently into side-view spelunking.
- Enlarging and enriching the overworld, narrative and connections between caves and the Meridian.
- Giving the depths beyond Meridian 100 greater identity and purpose.
- Improving navigation, screen layout, mouse movement and optional simplified controls.
- Adding optional exploration and inventory conveniences without removing traditional manual play.
- Expanding character creation, death records and run statistics.
- Improving presentation with square-tile layouts, additional animations, restrained particle effects and potentially music.

We also plan to experiment with environmental puzzles, chasms, bridges, alternate underground routes and additional fishing locations where they strengthen the existing game.

The precise order and scope may change in response to player feedback during Early Access. Our aim is for the full version to be a larger, clearer and more polished expression of the game already available—not a different game waiting to be built.

I will preserve save compatibility wherever practical, but it cannot be guaranteed throughout Early Access. Major changes to world generation, quests, items or underlying systems may occasionally require players to begin a new character. Any known save-breaking update will be clearly identified in the update notes.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Ammerow is already a substantial, fully playable single-player roguelike. Players can create and develop a character, explore the overworld, visit shops, undertake optional quests, descend the procedural Meridian, explore connected side-view caves and complete the current victory path at Meridian 100. Play can continue beyond that depth.

The current version includes:
- Traditional turn-based combat, ranged attacks, magic, inventory management and permanent death.
- Numerous races, classes, monsters, items, spells and procedurally generated dungeon levels.
- A connected overworld with regions of differing danger.
- Side-view cave exploration with free climbing, stamina, jumping, falls, pitons, ropes, swimming, air and meaningful peeking.
- Fishing with multiple rods, visible fish behaviour, underground habitats, discoveries and a village-larder quest.
- ASCII and optional tile-map presentation, multiple colour palettes, zooming, illustrated ASCII information cards, animation and an extensive soundscape.
- Saving, loading, memorials, character information, quest tracking and a local Hall of Records.

The game is currently Windows 64-bit, primarily keyboard-controlled and playable offline. Mouse support is available across much of the interface, but full controller support is not currently provided.
Early Access development will focus on expanding content and narrative, improving balance and explanations, polishing interface consistency, and developing the overworld, caves, fishing and post-victory depths further. The complete core loop is present; the principal unfinished areas are breadth, refinement and accessibility rather than basic playability. Steam-specific services such as achievements and Cloud saves are not included.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. Free forever! Maybe we will expand the available supporter packages (currently a soundtrack and a file bundle "Explorer Pack").”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Feedback will be collected through Steam Discussions and the public GitHub issue tracker, with a few focused places for bug reports, balance concerns and usability suggestions. I plan to review recurring feedback, publish clear release notes and explain significant changes when updates are made. As a solo developer I may not reply to every individual post, but reports and play experiences will help guide priorities throughout Early Access.”

About This Game

Ammerow: Lands Beyond is derived from the open-source roguelike Angband and is also available free of charge through its official GitHub project. The Steam edition contains the same game and is offered for players who prefer Steam or wish to support its continued development.

Ammerow is completely free to play. If you would like to support its development, the optional Exploration Collection DLC (an illustrated score and lore book and more) or an original soundtrack is available to purchase. Neither adds gameplay content or advantages.

The world is deeper than it remembers.

Ammerow: Lands Beyond is a traditional turn-based roguelike about dangerous journeys above and below the earth. Create an adventurer, cross a hostile overworld and descend through the hundred known depths of the Meridian to confront the Upwelling. Every action advances the world, every fight demands a decision, and death is permanent.

The descent does not only lead downward. Explore connected procedural caves from a side-on perspective. Free-climb rock, hammer pitons, deploy rope, peer into deep shafts, manage stamina and air, and fish the dark pools below. What you bring home can feed the village—and what you discover underground may reveal another road into the Meridian.

Choose crisp, coloured ASCII or an optional tile map. Monsters, equipment and shopkeepers are brought to life through detailed ASCII illustrations and a carefully authored soundscape.

  • Classic grid-based, turn-based combat

  • Permanent death!

  • A hundred-level main descent—with no artificial depth cap

  • Dangerous overworld exploration

  • Procedural side-view caves with climbing, ropes, water and falls

  • A complete fishing and village-larder progression loop

  • Numerous races, classes, spells, monsters and items

  • Zoomable ASCII and optional tile presentation

  • Fully single-player and playable offline

The path to victory is already open, but Ammerow is still growing. Early Access is an opportunity to make its caves deeper, its lands wider and its journey richer while preserving the uncompromising traditional roguelike at its heart.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

The music in Ammerow: Lands Beyond was created with Claude Compose, a bespoke composition system built for this project. Rather than a generative music model, it works like a tireless studio composer: an AI assistant (Anthropic's Claude) writes and runs code that composes each piece note by note — melody, harmony, counterpoint and orchestration derived from music theory — and performs it through real, licensed virtual instruments in a professional DAW (Ableton Live). It then "listens back" by analysing the rendered audio to refine the balance. No generative audio/music model was used, no AI was trained on other artists' recordings, and no track was produced from a prompt. Every note is placed deliberately, and every piece is directed, reviewed and approved by a human. The result is authored, not generated.

The sound effects are an original, human-directed procedural synthesis library. Claude Code assisted in writing custom Python DSP software and individual cue recipes; every waveform was deterministically rendered from mathematical models and recorded seeds. No recordings, performers, samples, stock audio, sample libraries or generative-audio service were used.

Ammerow is designed primarily as a coloured ASCII game. Selected creature, item and shopkeeper illustrations began as AI-generated source images and are converted through a deterministic ASCII-art pipeline. The optional tile mode is a work-in-progress secondary presentation. Its small atlases were programmatically drawn in a custom SDL application using natural-language Codex direction. No generative-image model, inherited tileset, traced artwork or third-party graphical asset was used.

Some narrative, gameplay data and other player-facing material were also developed with AI assistance under human direction and review.

Some Steam marketing backgrounds were created using OpenAI image-generation tools and then selected, reviewed and combined with deterministic Ammerow branding by the developer.

No AI runs while the game is being played.
