DON'T CAMP ON BEAR ISLAND! JUST DON'T DO IT!

Everybody told you so. However...

Your kayaks were supposed to take you on a nice little trip. Then the currents took charge. Now you're stranded on a remote island with a beautiful view and an appalling welcome. Somewhere above you is a mountaintop with room for a camp. All you have to do is get yourselves and your scattered supplies up there.

Discovering the bears came as a surprise. Discovering how fast a camping trip can turn into a screaming match came shortly afterwards.

Two of you are wrestling the tent uphill. Someone is shouting directions. Someone else has found a whistle. A bear has heard enough. Suddenly, the discussion about whose left is "left" seems much less urgent. Share the load, improvise a plan, and try to keep hold of your end while your friends improvise a completely different one.

Of course, there's always a reason to take a detour. The island is full of secrets, mysteries, and surprises, tucked into caves and corners that practically dare you to investigate. A flashlight, a willing accomplice, and "just a quick look" can take you a long way from the tent. That snoring in the dark might deserve a second thought.

Keep talking. Carefully. A friend's voice fading into the distance, a crackling radio call, a fit of laughter at exactly the wrong moment: out here, the conversation is part of the trouble. Your friends aren't the only ones listening. And it's difficult to sound reassuring when you've chosen a voice that makes you sound like a very small robot.

There are plenty of ways to make yourselves at home. Fish, dress outrageously, start a terrible little band, or settle a disagreement with a water fight. You can even pick up and throw a friend. An especially confident camper might try the same trick with a bear. Confidence is easier to find than good judgment.

When somebody goes flying and the gear ends up halfway down the mountain, dust yourselves off, find each other, and go back for it. Every hard-won delivery brings your little campsite closer to completion. Get the whole sorry expedition to the summit, finish the camp, and celebrate with fireworks. By then, you'll have earned the view. And several stories nobody will let you forget.
