What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to improve the game with feedback from players on questions like these: Is it fun to follow the world's history? Do the map and timeline convey what is happening? How much control makes the game most enjoyable to play? We will also be tuning the simulation's balance and the clarity of the controls.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Early Access to last about one year. This may change depending on development progress and player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to improve long-term simulation balance, map presentation, timeline and history book export, localization, and audio. We will also refine the controls for running a nation and for following people and events. The specifics will be adjusted based on development progress and your feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current build includes world generation, autonomous management of nations, diplomacy and war, town management, research, kings and vassals, adventurers and dungeons, dragons, a timeline, history book export, and saving and loading. You can play by watching the world or by controlling a single nation. Visual presentation and long-term balance are still being refined. Japanese is currently the most polished language; other language settings still contain Japanese text. Audio is also still in development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may increase at full release. Those who purchase during Early Access will get the full version at no additional cost. We do not plan to change the base price during Early Access, except for regular Steam sales.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will gather feedback and share development updates through the Steam discussions and Community Hub. Please tell us about confusing controls, balance issues, bugs, and memorable events that happened in your world. Screenshots, save data, the world seed, and the game version are helpful for investigating bugs.”

About This Game

Watch a world's history unfold on a single map

Kingdoms in Ink is a grand strategy game where you watch a sword-and-sorcery world on a single map. You can take control and steer a nation, or simply sit back and watch this world's history play out. Over time, nations grow, forge alliances, go to war, and their borders shift moment by moment.

Enjoy the grand historical tapestry of an imaginary world.

Auto Mode: watch history unfold

Leave the running of the realm to the court and witness the rise and fall of nations. Enjoy an ever-changing history from a bird's-eye view.

The histories of its people

It's not only the colors on the map that change over the course of history. Alliances and battles, kings and generals, heroes, and events in towns are recorded as they happen. Open the records of any town or person that catches your eye to follow the small stories within the larger history. At the end of a game, you can even export a history book, complete with maps, as an HTML file.

Packed with classic fantasy tropes

This fantasy world is home to many races, including humans, elves, and dwarves, and is filled with named seas and mountain ranges, ruins, and dungeons. Adventurers set out in search of holy relics, dragons cross the map, and the revival of the Demon Lord brings new peril to the age. Raise a party of heroes to defeat the Demon Lord, or conquer the world as a demon nation. There are countless histories to enjoy.

A new map, a new history

Generate new worlds of continents or archipelagos, or use a world seed to regenerate the same world. Switch map styles and decorative frames, and hide the interface to take in the world itself in full view.

The default “Chronicle” mode has no victory screen, so you can enjoy this world for as long as you like. Even after one nation rules the world, small states eventually break away in the provinces, and history goes on.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Kingdoms in Ink uses pre-generated AI-assisted content, including decorative map frames, store artwork, and some in-game and store text and translations. These assets and texts are prepared and reviewed during development. The game does not generate AI content during play or connect to external AI services.
