About This Game

The age is turning, and the Dark One is waking.

Castra has always lived in the shadow of its clock tower, but the shadow is spreading. When a simple bounty drags the young swordsman Raine into the city's underworld, he uncovers a corruption older than any Age: the Blight, the Order of Light's buried secrets, and a brother who is no longer himself.

Veil of Time is a hand-built JRPG with original painted maps, a custom interface, and a 32-track score by composer Tim Carlos.

Features

• A 5-8 hour story across 129 hand-painted maps: forests, drowned temples, blighted wastes, and the catacombs beneath the cathedral, with a multi-phase final confrontation and New Game+.
  
• A 32-track score by composer Tim Carlos, including the Veil of Time theme and the party's own character themes, written for the game.
  
• Two ways to fight. Slash, parry, and charge enemies in real time on the field as Raine (a perfect parry counter-kills), or let them close in for turn-based battles where the whole party fights with element weaknesses and threat management.
  
• The Slog, a collectible card game with 59 cards (10 legendary unlocks hidden across the world), tavern rivals, and a circuit to climb. Your collection feeds passive combat bonuses.
  
• A living world. A day/night cycle where townsfolk keep schedules and shops close at dusk, night hunters that stalk by sight, campfires to rest at, a 62-entry bestiary with lore, 29 quests and bounties on the town board, 31 readable in-universe books, butterfly catching, and breakable pots and cuttable grass with prize drops.
  
• 16 achievements to chase, from first parry to a no-heal boss kill.
  
• Every line spoken. Optional voiced dialogue for every conversation and every book (see the AI disclosure below): built for players with low vision or reading difficulties, for younger players, and for anyone who would rather listen than read.
  
• Adjustable to taste: text speed, auto-advance, battle pacing, and four difficulty levels.

Veil of Time is a hand-built game. The maps, the writing, the music, the interface, and the game design are all human work. Generative AI was used in five specific places, each reviewed and finished by hand:

1. Voice acting. Every line of dialogue and every in-game book can be spoken aloud (3,707 voice clips), synthesized with ElevenLabs from the game's own written script. We chose this so the story stays open to players with low vision or reading difficulties, and to younger players who are not fast readers yet. A voice cast of this size would otherwise be out of reach for a small studio. No performance was cloned from a real person without licence.

2. Character and bestiary portraits, generated from the game's original hand-made sprites and finished by hand.

3. Some character sprites and the party's battle animation sheets, produced with AI assistance from the project's own hand-drawn art, then hand-corrected and palette-locked.

4. The intro and outro cinematic stills, the title screen, and the store key art.

5. Ambient critters and butterflies, converted from hand-made source art.

Everything else you see, read, and hear was made by people.
