About This Game

An SQL course that likes you back.

TsundereSQL is an SQL course inside an anime visual novel. You type SQL into a query editor, run it on DuckDB and see the rows come back. When you submit, the story moves on only if your query also gives the right answer on data you have not seen. Most of your time is spent writing queries; the story scenes come between problems.

You start at your first SELECT and work through 224 problems across 14 modules, up to window functions, cohorts and production-style data with messy dates, NULLs and duplicates. Three instructors teach the modules, and each one warms up to you as you improve.

What you actually learn

Of the 224 problems, 220 are SQL exercises. The other four are analyst-judgment cases, where you write the decision and your reasoning instead of a query.

  • SQL Foundations and Aggregation & GROUP BY: pull the rows you need and get totals and rates you can trust.
  • Joins & Set Operations: combine tables without quietly doubling your numbers.
  • Subqueries & CTEs: break a hard question into steps you can read back.
  • Window Functions: rankings, running totals, QUALIFY, gaps and islands, sessions.
  • Product & Growth Analytics: retention, cohorts, funnels and experiment questions.
  • Advanced SQL: recursion, JSON, reshaping, data at scale and data modeling.
  • Working With Production Data: dates, NULLs, casts, messy JSON and records that disagree.
  • Thinking Like a Senior Analyst, the Growth Desk and the Interview Gauntlet: longer business questions, interview-style problems and the four judgment cases.

If you already write SQL, take the placement exam on the Module 1 page: six problems, no hints, and a pass skips you past up to three modules. If you are starting from zero, start at the top and let the difficulty climb with you.

The cast

Three instructors teach the course. Tsumugi is demanding, Aimi is patient, and Nora is precise to a fault. Each has her own fixed route with its own scenes and ending, and you unlock those scenes by solving problems. Romance is optional and can be switched off.

Runs on DuckDB, in a real editor

Every SQL exercise is checked on two to four hidden datasets as well as the one you can see, so a query that only fits the sample does not pass. When your answer is wrong on the sample you can see, the game shows your rows next to the expected ones, with the missing and extra rows marked.

Meet the instructors

Tsumugi, Nora and Aimi standing side by side against a chalkboard.

Tsumugi: SQL Foundations, and the placement exam that lets you skip the first three modules if you already know them. She will tell you the query is fine, and then tell you what is wrong with it.

Nora: joins, window functions, and the Growth Desk where the question is money. With Nora, "it works" is where the conversation starts.

Aimi: she keeps your record, every solve and every miss, and runs the review rounds that bring back problems you solved, on fresh data.

Good to know

  • English only. All story and course text is in English.
  • Windows 10 or 11, keyboard and mouse. No controller support.
  • Plays offline once installed. The optional tutor needs an internet connection.
  • The story deals with grief, memory loss and unreality.
  • The free demo is all of Module 1, so you can try the course before you buy.

Content notes

The game includes optional romance storylines and optional suggestive anime artwork (including swimwear or other revealing, non-nude outfits). On first launch, before the game starts, a content screen that previews both art settings requires an affirmative adult confirmation to continue with suggestive artwork, or offers a one-click route that disables it. Suggestive artwork is otherwise on by default after confirmation and can be disabled later in Settings. Romance is enabled by default and can be disabled separately. There is no nudity and no explicit sexual content.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

TsundereSQL was made with the help of generative AI tools for its character art, backgrounds and short animated clips. The developer designed the course and directed, selected and edited the results. During play, the optional tutor and four analyst-judgment exercises can use a hosted AI service to write text-only SQL hints, example queries, grading and feedback, based on what you type and the current exercise. Requests go through a developer-run proxy with input limits, redaction, model restrictions, safety instructions and output filtering. No images, story scenes or audio are generated during play, and generated SQL is never run automatically. You can finish the course without the tutor, and the judgment exercises have a local fallback.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

TsundereSQL contains optional romance (dating-sim) storylines and optional suggestive anime artwork of adult characters: swimwear, lingerie-styled and other revealing outfits, towel-wrapped hot spring scenes, sheer layers, poses from behind, flirtatious dialogue, and romantic scenes such as confessions, dates and kisses. There is no full nudity and no explicit sexual content. Some adult characters wear school-style uniforms. On first launch, before the game starts, a content screen that previews both art settings requires an affirmative adult confirmation to continue with suggestive artwork, or offers a one-click route that disables it. With suggestive artwork turned off, characters can still appear in swimwear, sportswear and fitted outfits in some phone photos. Suggestive artwork can also be disabled later in Settings; romance is on by default and can be disabled separately. The story deals with grief and a character's implied suicide, without graphic detail or any depiction of methods. The game also contains alcohol (wine, champagne, whiskey, beer, sake) and randomized cosmetic gacha-style rewards that use only earned in-game currency, with no real-money purchases.
