Lost Gaijin is a Japanese-learning text adventure set inside a persistent, AI-directed simulation of 1994 Japan.

You step off a local train in rural Japan with ¥250,000, a paper address, and almost no Japanese. There is no smartphone, translation app, or GPS. The station attendant asks for your ticket.

What do you do?

Type anything. Begin in English, mix in whatever Japanese you know, and use more as you learn. The Storyteller turns your choices into an ongoing adventure. The Coach reads each reply, gives feedback on your Japanese, and shows you a natural way to express what you meant.

There is no fixed dialogue tree and no correct route. The world takes your attempts seriously, and the story is whatever happens next.

Learn Because You Need It

The study schedule hides underneath the story. Every kanji you encounter becomes part of a personalized spaced-repetition system. Writing it correctly pushes its next review further away; struggling brings it back sooner. Each reading is tracked separately, because recognizing 食 as しょく does not necessarily mean you know it as た in 食べる.

• Master all 2,136 jōyō kanji through a living map of what you have encountered, remembered, and used.

• Type Japanese naturally with the built-in input method. Romaji becomes kana, then kanji, or you can use your own system-level Japanese IME.

• Look up words without leaving the story in an offline dictionary containing more than 432,000 entries.

• Hear more than 6,300 human-recorded pronunciations directly from the dictionary.

• Inspect any word with a click to reveal its reading, meaning, grammar, and conjugation.[/]

The Whole Country Is the Classroom

Explore every prefecture and 3,374 municipalities drawn from official 1995 boundary data. Travel by describing what you want to do: catch a train to Matsuyama, walk toward the coast, or try to find the address folded in your pocket. Routes follow the real connections between places, so getting somewhere is part of the adventure.

Hourly weather reconstructed from historical climate records follows you across the country. A humid Shikoku afternoon drains your thirst. Winter in Hokkaidō demands the right clothes. Rain makes the umbrella in your bag matter.

• Take care of yourself: hunger, thirst, rest, and energy change as the clock moves. Neglecting them can affect your ability to communicate.

• Account for every yen: meals, tickets, purchases, and earnings are recorded as events in your personal story.

• Carry only what fits: bags have limited slots and weight, while food, clothing, and other items have practical uses.

• Create your traveler: customize their appearance and build a distinctly 1994 wardrobe whose clothing affects how weather treats them.

Your Journey, Your Models

Choose separate language models for the Storyteller and Coach, or stay with the tuned defaults and start playing immediately. Each save becomes its own persistent universe, with its own journey, Japanese progress, wallet, wardrobe, inventory, and weather.

Lost Gaijin is best suited to beginner and intermediate learners who can already read hiragana and katakana. Furigana, the Coach, the dictionary, and the word inspector help you reach beyond your current level without turning the world into a scripted lesson.

Lost Gaijin uses generative AI during development and gameplay. Selected pre-generated visual and audio assets used in the game and its Steam materials were created or edited with generative AI tools and reviewed by the developer. During play, text-generating AI responds to player input and game state to create dynamic story content and personalized Japanese-language coaching. Live-generated text is provided through OpenRouter and may vary between playthroughs.
