What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“MataOno is a solo-developed game, and Early Access lets me grow it alongside its players. The core game is complete and fully playable, but my game having proper balance, variety, and overall polished gameplay is extremely important to me. The best way to get those right is with real players playing the game and thinking in ways that I never would. Early Access gives me the space to continue adding content, tuning difficulty, and fixing issues based on direct feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan to be in Early Access for roughly six months, though this may shift depending on the pace of content updates and community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand MataOno in several directions during Early Access: more items, dice bases, ability faces, perks, catalysts, bosses, kits, and challenges to deepen the gameplay's variety. I also plan to continue working on balance and difficulty, polishing the overall experience, and improving accessibility and quality-of-life features based on how people play. Depending on how development goes, I would like to explore additional modes and features as well. Overall, the full version is intended to be a much larger, more varied, and more polished version of what it is now.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“MataOno is fully playable from start to finish, with a decent number of items, faces, bases, catalysts, perks, bosses, unlockable kits and challenges, as well as an endless mode and tutorial for new players. It is a complete game, but Early Access is about growing its content and refining its balance rather than filling in missing fundamentals.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I am not currently planning to change the price when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to stay closely involved with the community through the Steam discussion boards and direct feedback channels, the MataOno Discord server, and any other interaction on my social media accounts. Player input on balance, item design, difficulty, bugs, and requested features will directly shape what I work on. I read everything that players share about the game, and I plan to prioritize updates around that feedback.”

About This Game

MataOno is a chaotic dice roguelike about building combos that spiral wildly out of control. Turn a simple Die with Numbered Faces 1-6 into a tool that scores you infinity (and yes, that's possible).

In MataOno, you get to completely build your Dice manually.

Every Die has six Frames (slots for Faces) you fill however you like. Numbered Faces set the raw values you roll and score, while Ability Faces each have their own unique power. Underneath it all sits a Base that changes how the entire Die behaves, bending the odds in your favor.

Mix, match, and rebuild until your Dice do exactly what your combo needs.

This is where your build clicks.

Items are your engine. Each one has a unique effect, feeding each other in a potentially overpowered chain. Stack the right pieces and a single roll erupts into a cascade, shooting your multiplier to the skies.

Big numbers come at a price.

Overperform and you build Pressure, the natural multiplier that rewards crushing a goal. But push too hard and Heat creeps up, and if it ever hits its limit, your run is over. When a roll lands just short, Tilting lets you nudge a Die, a precise, deliberate gamble that can rescue a round if used at the right moment.

During runs, you must constantly choose between greed and survival when managing your resources.

No two runs play out the same.

Between rounds, you'll spend your coins to improve your run across seven escalating Areas. The Stock Shop offers a clean pick of Items, Dice parts, and more, while the Mixed Shop is a gamble in itself, packed with crates, boosters, and risky chances at something that may just push you past the finish line. Slot permanent Perks for run-long bonuses, keep consumable Catalysts in your Holster for the perfect moment, and adapt your plan around Bosses that arrive to break whatever you've built.

Goals rise fast, so your build needs to rise faster.

When you've mastered every Kit, unlock the Randomness mode.

Randomness rebuilds MataOno from scratch every run. Every Item, Face, Base, Perk, Catalyst, and Boss ability is generated randomly on the spot, drawing from hundreds of millions of possible combinations. Anything can happen.
