What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SCUM is a next generation, story driven survival game featuring extremely complex game mechanics and unrevealed survival features. Gamepires is an experienced team oriented towards innovation and perfection in game production and have decided to develop SCUM side by side in collaboration with its community with the goal of making the best possible survival game yet.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“SCUM will be in development for at least one full year during Early Access and to complete all planned features and content. However, additional community requests and ideas might shift the final release date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Gamepires has planned a wealth of features and content additions to be added for SCUM during development. Some of these features will be fully finished upon release into Early Access while others will be polished in the following year of development. During this period we will include many community suggestions and ideas, fix bugs. Furthermore we will improve game performance and upgrade gameplay experience on all levels to make SCUM ready for the full release.

For the final version of the game we plan to finalize all gameplay segments, then connect it with high level gameplay, include skill based crafting system from no skill up to advanced skill level, add fully developed combat system (melee combat and armed combat - all skill based), detailed character customization, mission objectives, character leveling system, vehicle support and many other features.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of SCUM will be playable and relatively stable with most features included on a basic/medium level of functionality. This means that players will be able to perform limited amount of actions or these actions will not be fully polished until game gets to final development phase. The players will be able to explore the island, build up their characters, engage other players, NPCs or wildlife and make simple alliances with their buddies. Early Access will not include high level gameplay – story driven mission objectives. The progress of the game development can be followed on our official SCUM dev blog - scumgame.com.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of SCUM will increase slightly as the game gets closer to release date with the initial lower price serving as a 'thank you' to the community that supports us in the early development phase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Gamepires encourages the community to post their comments, ideas, feature requests and bug reports directly on Steam’s discussion pages, official game dev blog or even third party sites (Reddit, Wiki, etc...).

All posts, suggestions and ideas will be closely examined by our community managers and they will give their best to respond to each and every post you make. A good deal of your requests will be implemented in the game and the best to communicate your ideas to us is by making group requests or polls – if more people want something then we can shift priorities and make it happen faster. However please be patient, game development is fun, but things don’t happen overnight and remember that good things come to those who wait. :)”

Developer Showcase #8 - Iggy (Animator)

Hey, folks! Guess what! It's me and I brought a friend again!

His name is Igor, but literally everyone calls him Iggy to the point where new people will accidentally refer to him as Igor and get blank stares like "who tf is that?" Iggy is one of our 2ish animators and today you'll learn his story!

This is what bro pride looks like.

Before joining us at Gamepires, Iggy had a really cool past life as a very successful Youtuber making Dota 2 videos. Later he worked at another local gamedev studio as a video editor and then finally found his home with us.

If you're Iggy and you know it clap your hands! (Apparently this is a screenshot of a polished animation for carrying stuff around, but why would I give you any useful info if I can make a bad joke instead?)

If you've followed us here on Steam for a while, then you know that he wasn't always "just" an animator. We used to be poor and small and understaffed and Iggy is a bro, so he'd moonlight as a community manager talking to you guys and answering your questions. Then I got here and took his job. Kidding! We have more people for that now, so Iggy is free to concentrate on his holy animator duties, but you can still run into him online from time to time because he just likes talking to people. Weirdo.

We don't do that here, bro.

Right now he's working on the animations for the female characters. Lucky for him, he doesn't have to do everything from scratch and we can reuse some from the male characters. He says that otherwise we'd have to wait 2 more years because that's just the amount of time it would take. It doesn't mean it's an easy fix, though. There's still a huge amount of things to be done and, honestly, we're under a huge amount of pressure to do this right.

What? Is this not how your wives, mothers and sisters walk around all the time? Even when it's like really hot? Okay.

Female animations aren't the only animations he's working on right now. For example, down below you can see what jumping from an airplane with a parachute will look like.

It's so fun that Steam doesn't allow gifs in posts! Wheeeeeeeeee! Broooooooo.

Iggy has made most of the animations already in SCUM, as well as many that are still waiting to be implemented. The lovely pooping and peeing animations we have? Those too. He likes working on several things at once because when he gets bored of one thing he can just do something else and then come back to it later. That means right now he's also making animations of shooting from a squad bike, boxing, and rowing. I asked him what his favorite thing about his job is, but he was just like "I don't know, I like all parts of my job" and then when I asked about the worst part he said there isn't one, so at that point I just gave up because I can't handle that much chill.

I already mentioned that Iggy is a bro and that wasn't just a lame joke. We got to work one morning and there was a random piano there. Turns out, Iggy brought his own piano because some people have expressed interest in learning how to play and Iggy, being a bro he is, was like "hey, yeah, by the way, I play the piano, so I can teach whoever here wants to learn to play it." So that's what he does afterhours. For free, just like that, because he's a bro. Several of us are also starting a cringey fake band just for fun, so if you have any songs you'd like to hear us cover, make sure to let us know in the comments. We'll pick the best suggestion and make a very bad music video. For real. It's gonna be bad, though.

I mean yes, he does look like he's playing something pretentious, but I'm 99% sure it was Celine Dion. Bro.

I hope you liked Iggy because all of us here do. And if you're nice, maybe he can be your bro as well. We'll talk to you again here on Friday and, in the meantime, you know where to find us!

Love you, bye!

Development update #8 & Community Q&A

Hope everyone had a good weekend, now let's get this show on the road

Vehicle Shaders
  • We all remember this guy? Well, your wish came true, our shaders don't look any more like, whatever you were trying to say.

Missions

  • Our mission system is slowly but surely coming to life, check out some screenshots I stole!

Say hi to your new friend.

M82

Shoveling

  • Did I really just write that? In any case, you will be able to bury items in the ground. For starters, you'll be only able to bury chests, also keep in mind everything that is buried, will deteriorate faster.

Eyelashes

  1. Use eyeshadow for added fullness.
  2. Mix your colors.
  3. Heat your curler.
  4. Prime before curling.
  5. Layer your formulas.
  6. Add eye makeup remover to resurrect dry mascara.
  7. Clean your spoolie with contact lens solution.

Shout out to Stylecaster for the tips and tricks!

  • Women models are coming up nicely, and the wait is even shorter.

Archery achievements

  • Do you think we were done with archery? Well... We are making an awesome archery video explaining all the details behind it so you can hunt down those achievements like a pro!

A little snapshot from the archery video.

Community Q&A

  • It's not a priority. After we leave EA who knows.

  • Hi mom! Thanks for the cookies last week.

  • Yeah! It's already planned. Metabolism, complete with medicine and cooking is due to rework in the future.

  • We're not sure yet, if you guys have any suggestions let us know bellow in the comments!

  • We actually have a 3-month road map,, and those 3 months expired yesterday, so thanks for reminding us! We'll start making a new one as soon as possible.

  • I misread that for a second there... But yeah they are planned.

  • Yep, once this feature is implemented, you will have to take care of your gun.

  • Wolves will be added later on, and they will behave like a pack so be careful! Also, a feature where you can wrestle the alpha, and take over the pack if you win (no, not really).

  • YO, OUR CODERS ARE SHIT. They just made the most complex survival game out there. I mean hey, feel free to show us how it's done, if you're good we can hire you.

  • Hoarding is not a healthy habit you know? The idea is for the prisoners to craft, forage and provide what they need to survive for themselves. Loot, especially high-end loot, is more of a privilege than a given. That being said we do not want to restrict it too much and we are always looking at the feedback for maximum balance.

About This Game

The world’s unquenchable need for entertainment has turned towards bloodlust as entertainment behemoth TEC1 is set to premiere season two of its television sensation SCUM. This new season moves the contest from the rugged, enclosed indoor arenas to the lush forests, rolling fields, and rugged terrains of TEC1’’s own private SCUM Island. Both fan favorites and new prisoners will clash in a ruthless war of survival while battling for the support of viewers, producers, and corporate sponsors for fame, gifts, and a chance of life after death.

SCUM aims to evolve the multiplayer open world survival game with unprecedented levels of character customization, control and progression, where knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival. Combining the methodical planning and management of hardcore survival with optional PvP ‘network events’ available to everyone at anytime, SCUM strikes a unique balance between complex simulation and intense action in the next generation of survival game.

SCUM is built with Unreal Engine 4 and will expand throughout the Early Access period. Fans can follow details on development with weekly dev blogs on scumgame.com and on Twitter @SCUMgame.

FEATURES [ALPHA]

Complex Simulation: SCUM utilizes dozens of complex systems to allow players to go as deep as they choose into the management of their character. Players can delve into the minutia of the survival experience through systems controlling their character’s metabolism, inertia during movement, and even how fast layers of clothing dry on and off the body. The devil is in the details...

Massive Landscape: Traverse and explore 144 sq km of terrain that includes dense forests, picturesque beaches, serene fields, abandoned towns, and rundown airfields. Initially, the massive terrain will be handled by foot and as development continues vehicles will be introduced for quicker movement.

PvP Network Events: Enter TEC1’s ongoing network events with a click of a button and be whisked to enclosed areas of the island for white-knuckle PvP gameplay. Volunteer for an event and be pitted against other prisoners with fame points and high value loot on the line for those that survive.

Expanding Gameplay: While the current version of SCUM already includes basic crafting, combat, and customization systems, the featureset and gameplay will continually expand to include more advanced mechanics, more variety in gameplay, and a metanarrative for players to complete missions with hopes of one day getting off the island...

Online Multiplayer: Survive with up to 64 players per server with the option to rent your own server right from the in-game menu.
