What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SCUM is a next generation, story driven survival game featuring extremely complex game mechanics and unrevealed survival features. Gamepires is an experienced team oriented towards innovation and perfection in game production and have decided to develop SCUM side by side in collaboration with its community with the goal of making the best possible survival game yet.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“SCUM will be in development for at least one full year during Early Access and to complete all planned features and content. However, additional community requests and ideas might shift the final release date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Gamepires has planned a wealth of features and content additions to be added for SCUM during development. Some of these features will be fully finished upon release into Early Access while others will be polished in the following year of development. During this period we will include many community suggestions and ideas, fix bugs. Furthermore we will improve game performance and upgrade gameplay experience on all levels to make SCUM ready for the full release.

For the final version of the game we plan to finalize all gameplay segments, then connect it with high level gameplay, include skill based crafting system from no skill up to advanced skill level, add fully developed combat system (melee combat and armed combat - all skill based), detailed character customization, mission objectives, character leveling system, vehicle support and many other features.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of SCUM will be playable and relatively stable with most features included on a basic/medium level of functionality. This means that players will be able to perform limited amount of actions or these actions will not be fully polished until game gets to final development phase. The players will be able to explore the island, build up their characters, engage other players, NPCs or wildlife and make simple alliances with their buddies. Early Access will not include high level gameplay – story driven mission objectives. The progress of the game development can be followed on our official SCUM dev blog -”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price of SCUM will increase slightly as the game gets closer to release date with the initial lower price serving as a 'thank you' to the community that supports us in the early development phase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Gamepires encourages the community to post their comments, ideas, feature requests and bug reports directly on Steam’s discussion pages, official game dev blog or even third party sites (Reddit, Wiki, etc...).

All posts, suggestions and ideas will be closely examined by our community managers and they will give their best to respond to each and every post you make. A good deal of your requests will be implemented in the game and the best to communicate your ideas to us is by making group requests or polls – if more people want something then we can shift priorities and make it happen faster. However please be patient, game development is fun, but things don’t happen overnight and remember that good things come to those who wait. :)”

Patch Notes

Here we are with a new patch, more bug fixes, QoL changes and some extras!

So let's start with some new things that we added.

Server optimizations

  • So we looked into lag, as no one likes lag. And we did something awesome, items that repeated a lot on the island (doors etc..) we found a way how to lower servers awareness of those items, and we gained a massive boost, up to 5x faster. Down bellow you can check out how the whole process went.

  • Also we deployed a new master server and that means faster server list browsing!

It was a warm and sunny summer morning last April. I was sitting in my favourite sofa in the office. Thinking about SCUM. And big data. As I always do in the evenings. At one point there are 5 doughnuts on my table, and the first thought that came to me "How to eat all 5 in a most efficient way?" and then it dawned on me. Big. data. blockchain. crypto-algorithms. using cutting edge deep network machine learning methods for network replication IoT applications.
And so I started to mash my keyboard (already on the third keyboard), and then it was born. Network crypto-algorithm replication blockchain.
Everything that was a lot now is lot less and server runs about 5x faster. Fixed the game. The end, or is it?

    New weapons!
    • M1891

We added a new family member to the rifles in SCUM. The M1891, a five-shot, bolt-action rifle. It uses the 7.62x54mmR cartridge, and it can be found in military areas.

    • Eder 22

Eder 22 is a new gun that uses 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge, and you need to find a magazine if you don't want to feed the bullets 1 by 1. It can be found all around the island, but the best locations to find it are around military and police areas.

Fortify in the name of God.

    • The continental church can be fortified from now on.

    Feed me more!

    • As cooking is being reworked, we will need to rework some other stuff as well, for starters how our fire system works. We added a new mechanic where you can add materials to your fire so it doesn't go out. It looks something like this:

    • Keep in mind that there is a cap on how long the fire burns. The one in the picture burns up to 120 minutes, and different materials add more or less time, from just a few seconds up to 60 minutes. The cap can not be pushed over. If the fire has been burning for 10 minutes and you add a material that can add 60 minutes of fuel, you will only gain 10 minutes from that material. Here is a list of items that you can use:

      • Paper - 10s

      • Rag stripes - 15s

      • Tinder - 30s

      • Gun powder - 30s

      • Rags - 30s

      • Improvised rope - 60s

      • Tree bark rope - 60s

      • Short wooden stick - 1:30min

      • Rope - 2min

      • Long wooden stick - 5min

      • Kitchen board - 10min

      • Small wooden log - 30min

      • Wooden plank - 60min

    • If you use an item that has uses, all uses will be depleted and the item will be destroyed

    • In the future we want the fire to have a visual indicator of how long it's burning by changing the fire intensity. If the fire has just recently been lit, it's going to be big and roaring, and if it's almost burned up, you'll see a tiny flame. Those states will also impact cooking in the future.

    Bug fixes

    • Fixed a bug where fame wouldn't be reduced on death.

    • Fixed a bug where if you died while leaning you would respawn in the same position.

    • Fixed a bug where you could exit a vehicle while beside a wall, and clip through it.

    • Fixed a bug where sled would penetrate through various objects and causing issues.

    • Fixed a bug where sometimes you were able to loot through walls.

    • Fixed a bug where you could pick up objects and chests through walls and ceilings.

    • Fixed a bug where the vehicle horn would get stuck in an infinite loop.

    • Fixed clipping issues with higher FoV values.

    • Fixed issue where cargo activation in events happened twice, awarding double points

    Quality of Life changes.

    • Opening and closing doors now can be heard up to max 25 meters.

    • Player footstep sounds have been lowered a bit.

    • Added distinct sounds for switching between auto and single fire mode.

    • Added additional checks for dragging items. Should fix the issue with using items trough walls because of clipping.

    • Implemented scrolling trough admin command suggestions.

    And everything else.

    • Various server and client optimizations.

    • EAC improvements.

    • Implemented server log for chat

About This Game

The world’s unquenchable need for entertainment has turned towards bloodlust as entertainment behemoth TEC1 is set to premiere season two of its television sensation SCUM. This new season moves the contest from the rugged, enclosed indoor arenas to the lush forests, rolling fields, and rugged terrains of TEC1’’s own private SCUM Island. Both fan favorites and new prisoners will clash in a ruthless war of survival while battling for the support of viewers, producers, and corporate sponsors for fame, gifts, and a chance of life after death.

SCUM aims to evolve the multiplayer open world survival game with unprecedented levels of character customization, control and progression, where knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival. Combining the methodical planning and management of hardcore survival with optional PvP ‘network events’ available to everyone at anytime, SCUM strikes a unique balance between complex simulation and intense action in the next generation of survival game.

SCUM is built with Unreal Engine 4 and will expand throughout the Early Access period. Fans can follow details on development with weekly dev blogs on and on Twitter @SCUMgame.

Complex Simulation: SCUM utilizes dozens of complex systems to allow players to go as deep as they choose into the management of their character. Players can delve into the minutia of the survival experience through systems controlling their character’s metabolism, inertia during movement, and even how fast layers of clothing dry on and off the body. The devil is in the details...

Massive Landscape: Traverse and explore 144 sq km of terrain that includes dense forests, picturesque beaches, serene fields, abandoned towns, and rundown airfields. Initially, the massive terrain will be handled by foot and as development continues vehicles will be introduced for quicker movement.

PvP Network Events: Enter TEC1’s ongoing network events with a click of a button and be whisked to enclosed areas of the island for white-knuckle PvP gameplay. Volunteer for an event and be pitted against other prisoners with fame points and high value loot on the line for those that survive.

Expanding Gameplay: While the current version of SCUM already includes basic crafting, combat, and customization systems, the featureset and gameplay will continually expand to include more advanced mechanics, more variety in gameplay, and a metanarrative for players to complete missions with hopes of one day getting off the island...

Online Multiplayer: Survive with up to 64 players per server with the option to rent your own server right from the in-game menu.
